Mets reach agreement with Redding
Club remains in talks with agent for pitchers Lowe, Perez

By Anthony DiComo / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Their biggest splash perhaps still pending, the Mets instead zeroed in on a different starting pitcher on Friday.

The team and right-hander Tim Redding have agreed in principle to a one-year deal worth roughly $2.25 million, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed on Friday evening. A contract is not likely to be finalized until early next week, since Redding must pass a physical examination before the Mets will announce any deal.

Redding, 30, finished 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA last season, his second in Washington. The Nationals non-tendered him after that season, in which he made $1 million, thus avoiding the rather significant salary raise he was likely to receive through arbitration.

A veteran of seven big league seasons, Redding spent all of 2006 in the Minor Leagues, following previous stints with the Astros, Padres and Yankees. He elected for Minor League free agency after that season, a choice that led him to the Nationals and the two productive seasons that ensued.

For his career, Redding is 34-51 with a 4.92 ERA.

He presumably will battle rookies Jonathon Niese and Bobby Parnell for the fifth starter's role in Spring Training, though Redding's salary and experience should give him an early edge. The Mets' rotation currently consists of Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey and John Maine, and could yet include another significant addition.

Wanting to make one last major signing before the offseason ends, the Mets have spent this week in talks with Scott Boras, the agent for free-agent pitchers Derek Lowe and Oliver Perez. Their order of preference aside -- it's Lowe, then Perez at this point -- the Mets are likely to add either one of those two before the offseason ends.

The acquisition of Redding shouldn't affect their chances, or their desire, to do so -- but it could have a significant effect on the rest of the Mets' offseason spending. If they do sign either Lowe or Perez in the coming weeks, their rotation would then include four starters with guaranteed jobs and multiple others -- Redding and Niese, primarily -- battling for the fifth and final spot.

That means that Pedro Martinez and Randy Wolf, both of whom have been linked to the Mets extensively this offseason, would likely have to look elsewhere for employment. Despite an interest in acquiring more starting pitchers than they ultimately will need, the Mets are unlikely to sign multiple pricey veterans to compete for spots at the back end of their rotation.

A signing of Lowe or Perez, therefore, would likely be one of the final moves in a busy offseason for the Mets. Not long after inking his own contract extension, general manager Omar Minaya signed new closer Francisco Rodriguez to a three-year contract worth $37 million, then traded for relievers J.J. Putz and Sean Green in a three-team, 12-player deal with the Mariners and Indians. Minaya traded relievers Aaron Heilman and Joe Smith in that deal, and sent another reliever, Scott Schoeneweis, to the D-backs just two days later.

His bullpen makeover complete, Minaya then set about the task of improving his rotation, and Lowe has been the team's primary target since.

In addition to their search for another starting pitcher, the Mets have also looked to sign an infielder to back up Jose Reyes at shortstop and Luis Castillo at second base. To that end, they have recently been in talks with Boras to acquire another of his clients, former Red Sox shortstop Alex Cora.
