Fire damages historic home at Greenfield Village

DEARBORN -- Firefighters put out a fire at a historic home in the Menlo Park section of Greenfield Village this afternoon, according to The Henry Ford spokeswoman Carrie Nolan.

The fire was contained in the Sarah Jordan Boarding House, which was built around 1870 in Menlo Park, N.J. to house employees of Thomas Edison's laboratory. It was among the first buildings lighted by the new incandescent light bulb in 1879. The extent of the damage was unknown.

Nolan said no one was inside the building during the fire and there were no injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause.

I love going through those historic buildings. I hope it wasn't arson.

thats sad because so much history was in that house!

I recommend that everyone take a trip to Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum at some time! Great history that you cannot see anywhere else! I took school field trips there growing up, when I lived in the metro Detroit area, plus every 5 or so years since then.

I went to Ghettysburg and Detroit in 8th grade. Nice History there.

I still need to get to Colonial Williamsburg - Gettysburg yet.

It was a really neat deal. We toured the battlefield and got to look at all this other stuff. It was nice.

I went to Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum when I was in school a few times but haven't been back. I hope my kids go through the school, if not, I'll have to take them. It was sooooo interesting.
