Edgar Renteria, SS — Detroit Tigers - Nov. 13, 2008 - 10:20 a.m.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the A's are "likely to pursue" Edgar Renteria if Rafael Furcal proves too expensive.

Fantasy Spin:
Bobby Crosby will make $5.25 million in 2009, but apparently the A's have have decided to stop waiting for him to be healthy and productive at the same time. While Furcal is said to be seeking a four-year contract, Renteria may be available for a one- or two-year commitment after the Tigers declined his $12 million option.

I predict Renteria will go back to the NL where he had the most of his success. Cardinals or Dodgers will be my predictions. If he wants to risk going back to the AL, then the Twins make the most sense.

Renteria unlikely to get arbitration offer
Free-agent shortstop would be tempted to accept, stay in Detroit
By Jason Beck / MLB.com

DETROIT -- The Tigers seemingly had an early present last week when a report suggested that free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria was about to sign with the Giants. Instead, they head into the holiday shopping season with a key decision to make.

Before Detroit chooses what to do for its next shortstop, it has to figure out how to move with the old job-holder. Whether the Tigers offer arbitration to Renteria by Monday's midnight deadline will affect their future beyond that particular position.

It's more than a simple either-or situation. If the Tigers offer Renteria arbitration, they would receive two compensation picks in next summer's First-Year Player Draft if and when he signs elsewhere -- one of them a sandwich pick after the first round, the other selection in either the first or second round, depending on the team that signs him.

Considering the interest that Renteria has drawn on the open market, it would seem simple. The Tigers place particular emphasis on the Draft each year, considering it the one avenue for acquiring players in which they can compete on equal footing with bigger-market teams such as the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox and others. They've spent big on the Draft in some years on players such as Justin Verlander, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller and Rick Porcello, and they drafted shrewdly last year to bring in potential bullpen help that could arrive in a hurry with Ryan Perry, Cody Satterwhite and Scott Green.

The risk, however, is that Renteria could accept an offer of arbitration -- free agents have until Dec. 7 to do so -- and return to Detroit under a one-year deal at a salary determined by an arbitrator.

Though the Tigers hadn't formally closed the door on re-signing Renteria, they have shown virtually no interest in bringing him back, focusing instead on the alternatives on the trade and free-agent markets. By contrast, Renteria has said more than once that he would like to return to Detroit and play up to his capability after a disappointing 2008 season. Even so, he has drawn an impressive amount of interest from teams in the National League, where he has had virtually all of his success in his big league career. A multi-year contract from another club, such as San Francisco, would trump any arbitration offer from Detroit.

The expectation around the industry is that the Tigers will not offer arbitration to Renteria, preferring to part ways and take their chances on finding a potential upgrade -- at least on the defensive end. Team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said recently that the club has not made a final decision.

Renteria is the only Tigers free agent to fall into the compensation category under the list of Type A and B free agents ranked by the Elias Sports Bureau. Kenny Rogers, Kyle Farnsworth, Freddy Garcia, Casey Fossum and Vance Wilson did not qualify under the rankings, and are thus not expected to be offered arbitration.

Still, arbitration offers from other clubs to their own free agents could affect the Tigers' pursuits. Darren Oliver, the lefty reliever in whom Detroit has shown strong interest, is also a Type A free agent. The Angels have shown interest in bringing him back and could offer arbitration to scare off other clubs.

Since the Tigers finished in the bottom half of the Major League standings, they would only have to give up their second-round pick rather than their first-rounder to sign a Type A free agent. Yet given the aforementioned priority Detroit place on its Draft picks, especially in the early rounds, that second-rounder still has plenty of value.

Former Padres closer Trevor Hoffman also is a Type A free agent. Since San Diego announced last month that it would not try to bring him back, however, the Padres aren't expected to offer arbitration.

Joe Beimel, another free-agent lefty in whom the Tigers have shown interest, is a Type B free agent who would not require a pick from any team that signs him. So, too, is former Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon.

While talks have progressed slowly on the free-agent front for many relievers, they're widely expected to pick up once Monday's deadline passes, even for those free agents unaffected. That's partly by design. Major League Baseball moved up the arbitration deadline a couple years ago to allow teams to move without hindrance during the Winter Meetings. This year's Meetings start a week from Monday in Las Vegas.

Tigers pass on Renteria
Tom Gage / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- Simply put, the Tigers didn't want Edgar Renteria to say yes.

Renteria, the team's starting shortstop in 2008, was the only free agent of the seven Tigers who filed that would have brought them compensation had he signed elsewhere after being offered arbitration.

By offering him arbitration, however, the Tigers would have run the risk of him accepting, thereby remaining with the club for 2009 for at least as much as he made ($9 million) this year.

They didn't want that.

"The dollar amount we would have been exposed to we'd rather spend elsewhere," said Tigers' president and general manager Dave Dombrowski.

So on Monday, the deadline day for offering arbitration, they elected not to run the risk of Renteria accepting. At the same time, however, the Tigers decided to forego the compensation his signing elsewhere would have brought.

The compensation would have been the first-round slot of the signing club in next June's draft, plus a supplementary pick between the first and second round.

The other six Tigers free agents are unranked (neither A nor B) and therefore did not need to be offered arbitration. Those players are pitchers Kenny Rogers, Casey Fossum, Freddy Garcia, Kyle Farnsworth, (retired) Todd Jones and catcher Vance Wilson,

As far as Rogers' future is concerned, Dombrowski said, "I've not heard a word from him."

Despite not offering him arbitration, the Tigers can still negotiate with Renteria, but it's all but certain now, with the obstacle of compensation removed, that he'll sign elsewhere. Last week, for instance, it was reported the Giants had offered him a two-year contract for $18 million.

Acquired from Atlanta last winter, Renteria hit .270 with 10 home runs and 55 RBI in his only season as a Tiger.

Not bad enough we lose JJ to get Rent... we now will not even get draft picks!

So what if he came back, with Inge's range at 3rd base, he would have been better.

Now I hope they move Inge to SS and have Joyce or Hessman play 3rd base!

Tigers are better off moneywise by letting him go

They could spend it elsewhere

Tigers have lots of young talent in the minors already

Baseball: Roundup
Giants chase Renteria
Details of parameters on a deal for former Tigers shortstop are being swapped by sides.
Detroit News wire services

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants could have a new starting shortstop by the end of the week.

San Francisco is keeping up its pursuit of free agent Edgar Renteria as the leading contender to replace 11-time Gold Glover Omar Vizquel, who won't be re-signed.

While it's unclear whether Renteria has formally been offered a contract, details on the parameters of a deal are being traded between the sides. The Tigers declined to offer Renteria salary arbitration.

Giants on verge of signing Renteria
Free-agent shortstop could ink deal as early as Thursday

By Chris Haft / MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants appear poised to sign free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria, perhaps as early as Thursday.

And they probably won't stop there in their efforts to upgrade their offense.

Jeff Lane, Renteria's agent, confirmed Wednesday night that he had just returned from San Francisco, where he negotiated with Giants officials.

"We're very close to a deal," said Lane, who declined further comment.

Renteria batted .270 last season with Detroit, his lowest average since he hit .260 with St. Louis in 2001. He also totaled 10 home runs and 55 RBIs in 138 games for the Tigers. That would still represent an upgrade for the Giants, whose shortstops ranked last in the NL in batting average (.228) and OPS (.576) and tied for last in home runs (one) and runs (51).

The Giants hope that Renteria can regain the form he displayed in 12 National League seasons before joining Detroit. He's a career .290 hitter, a five-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner.

Renteria became a more viable commodity Monday, when Detroit refused to offer him salary arbitration. As a result, the Giants won't have to give Detroit their second-round selection in next June's First-Year Player Draft as compensation for signing Renteria.

During a conference call to announce the signing of right-hander Bobby Howry, Giants general manager Brian Sabean acknowledged that the club might make another free-agent move this week. Sabean added, "If that comes about, it'll enable us to be creative in other areas."

That could mean a trade. Yahoo.com reported that the Giants had discussed dealing left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to the Florida Marlins for third baseman Jorge Cantu, who hit .277 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs last season. Or the Giants could stick with free agency, where sluggers such as Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell are available. But insiders believe that the Giants rate both as only secondary options.

The Giants also are believed to remain definite contenders for the services of left-hander CC Sabathia, one of this offseason's top free-agent prizes. But Sabathia is still considering other options, mostly notably the New York Yankees' reported six-year, $140 million offer.

Logic would dictate that if the Giants continue to eye Sabathia seriously, they easily could shift attention to left fielder Manny Ramirez and first baseman Mark Teixeira, the other two premier free agents. But although the Giants have talked with agent Scott Boras, who represents both Ramirez and Teixeira, speculation has not linked the club to either player.

Source: Giants, Renteria reach 2-year, $18.5M deal

The Giants have reached agreement with free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria on a two-year, $18.5 million contract, according to a major-league source.

The deal will be announced Thursday afternoon.

Renteria, 33, will take over for Omar Vizquel at shortstop, with Emmanuel Burris likely moving to second base. The Cardinals also had been interested in Renteria, but reportedly have traded for Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. The Dodgers also had shown interest in Renteria as a possible replacement for Rafael Furcal.

The Tigers declined to offer Renteria salary arbitration after he batted .270 for them last season with a .317 on-base percentage, 10 homers and 55 RBIs.

Renteria signs two-year deal with Giants

By Chris Haft / MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants culminated their courtship of shortstop Edgar Renteria by signing the 13-year veteran to a two-year, $18.5 million deal Thursday.

The Giants had pursued Renteria and Rafael Furcal, another free-agent shortstop. But Renteria proved to be more economical than Furcal, who reportedly is seeking a four-year contract worth more than $10 million annually. The Giants and Renteria's agents, Jeff Lane and Barry Meister, began exchanging proposals about two weeks ago, as initially reported on MLB.com.

"Jeff and I really felt like this was the right place for him," Meister said.

Renteria's arrival is expected to prompt change throughout the Giants' infield. Emmanuel Burriss, who began the offseason as the heir apparent at shortstop, likely will play second base, where he'll compete with Kevin Frandsen and Eugenio Velez.

Frandsen's also in the mix at third base, although the Giants would like to obtain an offensively proven corner infielder, with Pablo Sandoval manning the other corner. If this happens, Frandsen could be thrust into a utility role. That might in turn quash the Giants' thoughts of re-signing utilityman Rich Aurilia, who has spent 10 of his 13 big league years with the club.

The Giants believe that Renteria, a .290 career hitter, can help upgrade their offense. San Francisco finished 15th in scoring and OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) in the National League while ranking last in the Majors in home runs last season. Also, Giants shortstops ranked last in the NL in batting average (.228) and OPS (.576) and tied for last in home runs (one) and runs (51).

Renteria's 62-point drop in batting average, from .332 with Atlanta in 2007 to .270 for Detroit last season, appears ominous.

"I thought he slowed down a little bit," an American League scout said.

Among longtime Giants fans, this might awaken memories of second baseman Rennie Stennett, who signed a then-lavish five-year, $3 million deal before the 1980 season and proceeded to hit .242 in two seasons before being released.

But indications are that Renteria's no Stennett. Renteria, who also amassed 10 homers and 55 RBIs for Detroit, hit .299 in last season's final two months. Moreover, according to his agents, he has shed more than 10 pounds this offseason to get himself fit.

A five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner, the 33-year-old Renteria was once considered among the Majors' most multitalented shortstops. He has exceeded .300 four times and enjoyed his best year in 2003, when he batted .330 with 13 home runs, 100 RBIs and 34 stolen bases for St. Louis.

Observers believe that Renteria will benefit from returning to the NL, where he hit .293 with Florida (1996-98), St. Louis (1999-2004) and Atlanta (2006-07). By contrast, he hit .274 with Boston (2005) and Detroit.

Because the Tigers declined to offer Renteria salary arbitration, the Giants will not lose a Draft pick for signing him.

Ex-Tiger Edgar Renteria has another clutch World Series performance
Detroit News wire services

San Francisco— Edgar Renteria delivered another big World Series hit that could provide a fitting bookend to his career.

Renteria broke up a scoreless game with a solo homer off C.J. Wilson in the fifth inning and added a two-run single in the eighth Thursday night to help the Giants beat the Rangers, 9-0, in Game 2 to take a 2-0 lead in the World Series.

"He knows that he's almost at the end of his career and he wanted to be in the playoffs," hitting coach Hensley Meulens said. "Once we got here, he wanted to go to the big dance one more time. There's no bigger time that we needed him and he's getting big hits."

Renteria's most famous moment came as a 22-year-old with Florida in 1997, when he hit a game-ending single off Charles Nagy with two outs in the 11th inning of Game 7 to give the Marlins a 3-2 win over the Indians and their first World Series title.

"Everything happened to me great in that game, the hit in '97," said Renteria, a former Tiger. "Today I was happy. I was proud and I know my family's proud, too."

Renteria ended another World Series in less celebratory fashion, hitting a comebacker for the final out in Boston's World Series sweep of St. Louis in 2004 that gave the Red Sox their first title since 1918.

With Renteria mulling retirement at the end of the season, he did his best to help another franchise move a step closer to ending a long championship drought. The Giants have not won the World Series since moving to San Francisco for the 1958 season.

They need to win two more games to get that elusive title. With the next three games in Texas, the Giants could return home as champions.

"He kept telling us we needed him all the way to the end. He wasn't lying," Meulens said. "As a professional and a 15-year veteran in this game, he's showing what he's all about. He's all about business, he's all about playing in big games. He's done it before. As a rookie in Florida he got a big hit for them to win. He was in the World Series with the Cardinals and obviously today with that big home run to put us on the board."

Renteria was an unlikely contributor, considering he started the playoffs on the bench after another rough regular season fill with injuries and lack of production.

But he worked his way back into the lineup and made his biggest contribution with San Francisco on the game's biggest stage. With Wilson and Matt Cain locked in a scoreless duel, Renteria stepped to the plate with one out in the bottom of the fifth.

Wilson left an 0-1 pitch up in the zone and Renteria made him pay for the mistake by driving it into the left-field seats. Renteria had gone 53 straight at-bats without a home run since connecting off the Dodgers' Ted Lilly on Sept. 4 and had not homered at AT&T Park since July 27 against Florida's Brian Sanches.

"Unbelievable. You guys know I have power," he joked. "He just threw me a fastball in and I just put a good swing on the ball."

Renteria wasn't done, hitting a two-run single in a seven-run eighth that extended the lead to 6-0.

Renteria has mostly been a disappointment since signing an $18.5 million, two-year deal with the Giants before last season. He hit just .250 last season and then was limited to 72 games this year because of three stints on the disabled list with a groin, hamstring and biceps injury.

He batted .276 with three homers and 22 RBIs and was somewhat of a forgotten man at the start of the postseason. He did not start in the first five games before getting a chance because of a wrist injury to Juan Uribe and the struggles from Pablo Sandoval.

He singled and scored the Giants first run in a Game 3 win over Philadelphia in the NL championship series, and added a hit and two runs scored in the World Series opener.

Meulens said managing partner Bill Neukom has repeatedly approached Renteria to keep him on track — which Meulens believes lifted Renteria's spirits.

"Mr. Neukom tells him, 'We're not done with you,'" Meulens said. "Mr. Neukom is a big fan or Edgar and every day he tells him."

Renteria has a lot more fans in San Francisco now.

Edgar Rings-eria! Series MVP is clutch again
In possible swan song, Giants shortstop delivers winning hit
By Anthony Castrovince / MLB.com | 11/02/10 12:32 AM ET

ARLINGTON -- The soft-spoken shortstop whose season had been marred by injury and whose long career was clearly coming to a close suddenly spoke up that September day in Chicago.

Edgar Renteria's Giants had just endured a shutout loss to the Cubs and were a half-game back of the Padres in the NL West, with 10 games left on the season slate.

The 34-year-old Renteria could feel his teammates tensing up, could see their October dreams drifting off path. A 15-year career had taught him how to read the ebbs and flows of the season, and with his body aching and the clock ticking, he didn't want this opportunity to go to waste.

"He got emotional with us and said that his career was closing down and he wanted another opportunity to do something special," injured teammate Mark DeRosa remembered. "His words, I think, resonated for hours with the guys. Because he's a man of few words."

Few words, yes. But many big hits.

We might have seen the last of Renteria on Monday night. But if this was, indeed, the end, as he has hinted so frequently in recent weeks, then he went out in the most magnificent way a player can -- a champion and a World Series MVP.

Renteria's two-out, three-run home run off Cliff Lee in the top of the seventh inning of Game 5 of the Fall Classic silenced Rangers Ballpark and gave Tim Lincecum and Brian Wilson all the backing they'd need in a 3-1 victory that brought San Francisco its first World Series title. It also capped a Series in which Renteria hit .412 (7-for-17) with two homers and six RBIs.

But this, of course, was no first for Renteria. His two-out, 11th-inning single off Charles Nagy was the game-winner for the Marlins in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series against the Indians. It remains the stuff of postseason legend, and Renteria simply added to his mystique here.

Only three other players have notched game-winning hits in two World Series-clinching games, and you might recognize their names: Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra.

Edgar Renteria, welcome to the list.

"It's unbelievable," he said. "It's unbelievable being in that situation, and I enjoyed both World Series."

What a Series this was for Renteria, who wasn't even a regular in the Giants' lineup as recently as Game 1 of the NLCS against the Phillies. Pablo Sandoval's struggles and Juan Uribe's brief wrist injury forced manager Bruce Bochy to stick the veteran, oft-injured Renteria in the lineup. And suddenly, Renteria took a trip back in time. He was flawless in the field, productive at the plate and the physical embodiment of a Giants team that shocked the baseball world in an amazing World Series run.

"He's a pro's pro and a beautiful person," general manager Brian Sabean said. "He deserves it."

Sabean drew plenty of criticism for signing Renteria to a two-year, $18.5 million deal before the 2009 season. The critics argued that Renteria was clearly in decline and not deserving of such a commitment.

Frankly, it was hard to argue back. Renteria hit just .250 with a .635 OPS in 124 games in '09. This season, groin, hamstring and shoulder injuries forced him to the disabled list three times and limited him to a career-low 72 games. He appeared in just 17 of the Giants' final 57 regular season games.

Behind the scenes, Renteria began telling himself and anybody who would listen that this was it. The man once known as the "Barranquilla Baby" was a baby no more, and it was just about time to leave the game behind and give the body a break.

But Renteria still desperately wanted one last shot at the postseason stage. And now we know why.

NO SHORT-AGE OF PRODUCTION
Edgar Renteria becomes the fifth
shortstop in history to win
World Series MVP honors.

Player ______Team__ Season_ AVG._ HRs
Edgar Renteria--- SF------ 2010----- .333---- 2
David Eckstein STL 2006 .364 0
Derek Jeter NYY 2000 .409 2
Alan Trammell DET 1984 .450 2
Bucky Dent NYY 1978 .417 0

"When we made it to the World Series," he said, "I just took it out of my mind and just [put my] concentration on playing the game and concentration on what I had to do to help this team win. I think that's why everything worked out good."

Said Bochy: "I know how bad Edgar wanted it."

Renteria wanted it enough to play with a completely torn left biceps muscle suffered during a pinch-hit appearance in Game 1 of the NLDS. He wanted it enough to stay sharp through the monotony of pregame workouts and batting practice sessions on those days his name was not in the starting lineup.

Once he was finally back in the lineup, Renteria began to prove he still had value. He had a key hit to set up a run in a Game 3 win of the NLCS. But in the World Series, he took his contributions to new heights.

Renteria's solo shot in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2 broke a scoreless tie, and the Giants, properly ignited, went on to a 9-0 win that gave them a 2-0 Series lead.

And mere hours before Game 5, with Dan Francisco on the cusp of a title, Renteria had a premonition that he shared with teammate Andres Torres in the indoor cages.

"He told me, 'I'm going to hit a home run tonight,'" Torres said. "He told me twice. Can you imagine that?"

Hard to imagine, especially with Lee on the hill and so much on the line. But these are the moments in which Renteria rises above.

"He's a guy who trusts himself," DeRosa said. "He's played the game so long that nothing's going to happen on the field that he hasn't been through. He's a guy who lives for the big moment."

The big moment came with Lee and Lincecum locked into a classic duel. It was a scoreless tie with two out in the top of the seventh. Cody Ross and Uribe had singled to open the inning, and Aubrey Huff had moved them over with the first sacrifice bunt of his career. But Pat Burrell went down swinging, and Lee was one out away from getting out of the jam.

Quickly, though, Renteria worked the count to 2-0. And when Lee hung him a cutter, Renteria pounced and pounded it out to left-center field.

"I got confident, looking for one pitch, and if he throws it I'm going to hit it back to the middle," Renteria said. "So he tried to throw the cutter, and the cutter stayed in the middle, and that's why it went out."

It went out 4,755 days and five teams after that base hit just barely drifted over Nagy's outstretched glove and bounced into the outfield to give the Marlins their first title in '97.

It went out and gave the Giants a win that was 56 years in the making.

It went out, and made Renteria a winner again.
