Angels not pursuing free agent Ramirez
GM Reagins says club will go with current, younger personnel

LOS ANGELES -- Two days after pulling out of the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes, the Angels pulled out of the bidding for Manny Ramirez as well.

Angels general manager Tony Reagins said when reached by phone on Tuesday that the Angels are not interested in the slugging outfielder.

"Manny Ramirez will not play for the Angels in 2009, or beyond, for that matter," Reagins said.

Reagins had previously described the chances of signing Ramirez, the 36-year-old future Hall of Famer, as "slim" and "very doubtful." The Dodgers withdrew a two-year, $45 million offer they presented to Ramirez, who lifted them into the postseason with his spectacular second half.

There were signs earlier that the Angels could go after Manny Ramirez, the hitter who clubbed them into submission in the 2004 and '07 postseasons, hitting three homers and driving in 11 runs in six American League Division Series games -- all won by Boston.

Angels owner Arte Moreno offered a public expression of admiration for Ramirez, one of the game's premier clutch hitters, and manager Mike Scioscia has said he'd have no problem with the independent-thinking left fielder joining his club.

"I think there was speculation out there that Manny could play for the Angels," Reagins said. "I think Mike and Arte had commented on a radio station about what type of player Manny is. We all believe Manny is a good player, and we think he could play for Mike Scioscia, but we want to give our young players an opportunity, and I'll leave it at that."

I didn't say the Angels. I said the Dodgers.

I'm wondering if most teams don't want to take him on.

Pudge wants too much money I'm sure.

Still, I'm not a huge fan of what skills he has left, but given the dearth of catchers on our team and available for free agency, I almost wish we'd have tried to sign him.
