Friday, November 21, 2008 Michigan 55, No. 4 UCLA 52 Wolverines shock Bruins Sims gets 18 points and Harris 15 for Michigan, which will meet up with No. 10 Duke tonight. Terry Foster / The Detroit News
NEW YORK -- A loud group of Michigan fans pumped their fists and sang a happy tune as they walked through the corridors of Madison Square Garden toward the busy Manhattan streets.
"It's great to be a Michigan Wolverine," they sang.
There hasn't been much to cheer for Michigan fans. Now the entire basketball nation is roaring about the Wolverines following their 55-52 upset Thursday night of No. 4 UCLA in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. Michigan overcame a 10-point deficit with tenacious defense, mostly off the 1-3-1 trapping defense.
"They did a very good job in the zone," said UCLA coach Ben Howland. "They disguised it well and we did not know if they were coming with it or pulling it back."
Michigan (3-0) will play No. 8 Duke (3-0) in tonight's final (7:30 p.m.) while UCLA (2-1) plays Southern Illinois (2-1) in the third-place game at 5. Both games are on ESPN2.
The game boiled down to the final seconds when UCLA's Nikola Dragovic hit a 3-point shot with five seconds left to slice a four-point lead to one. The Bruins fouled Manny Harris with 4.1 seconds left, and he hit both free throws to give U-M a 3-point lead.
"Those were two pressure-packed free throws," said Harris, who scored 15 and had four assists.
Michigan smothered guard Darren Collison and Harris blocked his 3-point shot at the buzzer.
It was an improbable journey for Michigan, which finished 10-22 last season and was buried by an 18-4 run by UCLA last year in Ann Arbor. Michigan wanted to use this game as a glimpse into the future. The Wolverines wanted to see what they were as a team and what tricks they could use when Big Ten play begins.
While stunning the college basketball, Michigan also discovered that its 1-3-1 trapping defense works against elite teams. The Wolverines forced the Bruins into a number of turnovers, fueling their fastbreak.
Michigan leapt for joy at the final buzzer. It was a dramatic victory and at least temporarily puts the Wolverines back on the basketball map.
"I told them to celebrate this right now," said Beilein. "But at 10:30 we have to flip over because we have a very good opponent coming up."
Michigan came here to measure itself against UCLA for the second straight season. Last year the Wolverines held an eight-point second half lead but fell apart during a 41-18 Bruins run.
This year Michigan was ready to play the Bruins. All-American center Kevin Love left for the NBA and left behind a team that struggled early this season. But this time the little guys gave the Wolverines fits.
Guards Collison, Jrue Holiday and Josh Shipp lived in the lane and burned Michigan with layups or fed open perimeter players for open shots.
However, UCLA's guards grew impatient and could not hold their lead.

No. 5/6 Spartans Fall to Terps, 80-62
Travis Walton led MSU with 16 points
Nov. 27, 2008
Box Score
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland hustled its way to an 80-62 upset of No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday at the Old Spice Classic.
After falling behind by three early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good. Maryland held Spartans star Raymar Morgan to four points and shot 9-for-19 on 3-pointers to 2-of-9 for Michigan State.
The Terrapins also were much better at the free throw line, going 17-of-21 while Michigan State was 12-of-27. Travis Walton led the Spartans (2-1) with 16 points.
Morgan got into early foul trouble and was never a factor. He took just three shots in 14 minutes
Maryland will play the winner of the game between No. 9 Gonzaga and Oklahoma State on Friday. The Spartans face the loser.
With the score tied at 16 midway through the first half, Maryland went on an 11-2 spurt and then held off a late Michigan State rally to take a 37-34 halftime lead.
Attacking the basket, the Spartans scored the first six points of the second half before Maryland took control.
Eric Hayes and Adrian Bowie added 13 points apiece for the Terrapins, who matched Michigan State's muscle inside and cruised down the stretch.
The game figured to match Michigan State's accurate 3-point shooting against Maryland's strong perimeter defense. The Spartans came in shooting 43.8 percent from behind the arc, while Terps opponents were making only 19.6.
It wasn't much of a contest.
Maryland, which didn't receive a vote in the latest AP poll but returns a nucleus from the team that upset No. 1 North Carolina in January, gave MSU all it could handle early. The Terps hung with the Spartans, who finished second in the Big Ten in rebounding last season, by besting them in the paint 14-8 in the first half.
Vasquez, who rebounded from offseason ankle surgery to be named Atlantic Coast Conference player of the week, also had six assists but made only two of eight 3s against a defense concentrating on stopping him.
The Terrapins shot 51 percent from the field and took advantage of 15 MSU turnovers, 10 in the first half.
Maryland led 34-20 in the paint and held its own on the boards, getting outrebounded only 38-35.

Spartans Rebound With Convincing Win
Michigan State defeats Oklahoma State, 94-79.
Nov. 28, 2008
Box Score
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) -Raymar Morgan and his teammates responded to a challenge from Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.
Morgan scored 29 points and No. 5 Michigan State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a convincing 94-79 win over Oklahoma State in a losers' bracket game Friday night at the Old Spice Classic.
Travis Walton added 16 points for Michigan State (3-1), which was upset by Maryland 80-62 in the opening round.
"That was an interesting game for a coach because, as all you can imagine, nobody felt good about (Thursday night)," Izzo said. "The credit definitely goes to the players."
Oklahoma State (4-2) got 21 points from Terrel Harris. The Cowboys were beat 83-71 by No. 9 Gonzaga on Thursday.
"If we use this as a learning experience, we can respond from it and make our team a better team for the long run," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford. "We're learning a lot about ourselves."
After averaging 21.5 points in his first two games this season, Morgan spent most of Thursday's game with Maryland on the bench in foul trouble and finished with just four points.
"Coach challenged me," Morgan said.
Morgan was not in the starting lineup for just the fourth time in 68 career games, and the first time since his freshman year.
"I knew we couldn't afford to get fouls on him early," Izzo said. "He really responded and had an incredible game."
The junior came off the bench with 16:50 left in the first half and scored four points before being taken out three minutes later after picking up his second foul.
Morgan was reinserted back into the lineup midway through the first half and scored on a layup to put Michigan State up 23-16 with eight minutes left. His 3-point play with 4:34 remaining extended the Spartans' advantage to 36-19.
"Morgan came out and was just an animal," Ford said.
Morgan had 9 points, and Marquise Gray and Kalin Lucas added 8 apiece to help Michigan State take a 44-29 halftime lead. Gray and Lucas finished with 12 points each.
Lucas' fast-break basket gave Michigan State a 57-36 lead with 17 minutes to play. Walton's basket made it 61-39 at the 14-minute mark.
Harris' 3-point play got Oklahoma State within 62-48, but Morgan responded by scoring the next four points.
Obi Muonelo scored 15 points, Byron Eaton 14, and James Anderson 13 in Oklahoma State's losing effort.
Michigan State center Goran Suton missed his second straight game with a sprained left knee.

MSU's Big Ten opener moved to Noon on Dec. 31 by Steve Grinczel | Grinz on Green Wednesday December 10, 2008, 7:43 PM
EAST LANSING -- Michigan State's basketball team should be able to get back in time to celebrate New Year's Eve in East Lansing after all.
The Spartans' Big Ten opener on Dec. 31 at Minnesota has been moved to 12 noon Michigan time (11 a.m. Central) so it won't conflict with the Golden Gophers' Insight Bowl football game against Kansas at 5:30 p.m., the conference just announced Wednesday evening.
The basketball game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. Eastern -- just early enough not to interfere with most New Year's parties unless it went into quadruple overtime.
Nevertheless, this change is good news for Michigan newspapers, such as our very own Booth Newspapers, which would be up against fierce holiday deadlines with the original tip-off and have a hard time getting game stories into the Jan. 1 morning editions.
Opening the conference schedule on New Year's Eve is still the silliest thing I've ever seen the Big Ten do.
