It has to be sold out within 72 hours of kickoff Surprised the Lions weren't granted a 24 hour extension 5,000 tickets were left It is possible they could have sold a couple thousand and maybe FOX 2 buy the rest of them

| And FOX 2 Detroit is showing a Movie instead of another football game
Why not show another football game at 1pm
FOX has a Doubleheader of Football this Sunday
But Detroit Viewers will see only the 4pm game
And Whatever is on CBS at 1pm

| Friday, October 24, 2008 No wins, no TV for Lions Winless team will have its first blacked out game of the Ford Field era on Sunday against Redskins. Terry Foster / The Detroit News
ALLEN PARK -- A bad football team will be replaced by "Bad Boys" on Sunday.
The Lions failed to sell out their game against the Redskins at Ford Field by Thursday's deadline and, for the first time since late in the 2001 season, their game will not be broadcast on local television.
No station whose signal penetrates a 75-mile radius of Detroit may broadcast the game. That's a new development since the last time the Lions were blacked out. In the past, die-hard fans could drive outstate to watch the game on television.
Even fans who have the NFL Ticket through DirecTV or a satellite dish won't receive a signal for the game.
In place of the Lions game, Fox 2 plans to show the movie "Best Laid Plans," starring Reese Witherspoon and Josh Brolin, followed by a "Cops" doubleheader. Fox will broadcast the Giants-Steelers game and CBS will show the Browns-Jaguars game at 4 p.m.
The Lions claimed they sold 1,000 tickets in the 24 hours leading to Thursday's deadline but could not attract a major sponsor to buy the remaining 5,000 tickets.
The Lions' previous home games this season avoided blackouts. Furniture store Gardner-White bought the remaining tickets to ensure a sellout for the Sept. 14 home opener against the Packers. Fans bought the final tickets in time for the Oct. 5 game against the Bears.
Lions fans might get used to blackouts the rest of this season. Plenty of seats remain for every game except the Thanksgiving game against the Titans.
Team president Tom Lewand did not return a call seeking comment.
This is the first game at Ford Field that failed to sell out. The last time the Lions didn't sell out was Dec. 30, 2001, a 24-0 loss to the Bears. Although a crowd of 76,067 was announced at the Silverdome, many of those tickets were sold after the 72-hour blackout deadline.
The blackout rule was imposed in 1973. Before that, all home games were blacked out locally, including playoff and championship games.
The intent is to encourage fans to continue purchasing tickets if teams are short of a sellout. Traditionally, the league extends the deadline by 24 hours when a team is close to selling out, which it had done twice for the Lions this season.
The NFL claims 90 percent of games have been sold out since 1973.
Lions wide receiver Mike Furrey said the players are aware of the situation, but it's more important to win than count fans.
"It is something you hear about during the week," Furrey said. "There will still be a lot of people down there. The fans who love us and enjoy us and support us will be there. We look forward to hopefully getting our first victory for them.
"Our backs are against the wall a little bit," he said. "If we don't win soon, we won't be in it at all."
