CHICAGO -- Tigers starting pitcher Freddy Garcia pitched the Tigers to a lead in Monday's must-win makeup game for the White Sox with five-plus solid innings before abruptly leaving the contest with tightness in his right shoulder.
Garcia, making his third start for the Tigers since coming back from surgery last September to repair his labrum and rotator cuff, had the makings of his best outing against the club he helped lead to a World Series title three years ago. Jermaine Dye's first-inning RBI single and a fourth-inning single from Ken Griffey Jr. were the only hits off him.
With a low pitch count and effective stuff, manager Jim Leyland let Garcia go out for the sixth inning, something he did not do in his previous two outings. Garcia gave up a leadoff walk to Dewayne Wise, who stole second on Garcia's 0-1 pitch to Jermaine Dye.
Garcia ducked for catcher Dusty Ryan's throw to second, then grabbed towards the top of his right shoulder as Leyland and head athletic trainer Kevin Rand came to the mound. Leyland promptly went to the dugout to call for Armando Galarraga out of the bullpen.
If the injury is serious, it would be the first setback Garcia has had since beginning his track to game action with the Tigers. He signed a Minor League deal with Detroit in August, and began a rehab stint that ended with him in Detroit a few weeks ago.

| From an freep.com article: Peter Greenberg, the agent for Tigers right-hander Freddy Garcia, said the shoulder injury that forced Garcia from Monday’s start was “just tightness in his neck.” Garcia will be eligible for free agency next month. | |
