Magnificent 7: Rays amaze, top Sox
Garza's gem helps Tampa Bay shock Nation, reach Fall Classic
By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- Matt Garza and Willy Aybar led the Rays to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, and the Rays are now headed to the World Series.

Sunday night's contest was the 25th and final Rays-Red Sox installment of 2008, and obviously the most meaningful, as it earned the Rays a trip to the Fall Classic, where they will meet the Phillies in Game 1 on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field.

Garza started for the Rays and Dustin Pedroia homered against him with one out in the first inning to put the Red Sox up, 1-0. Garza then added six zeroes to his line before leaving the game after shortstop Jason Bartlett booted Alex Cora's routine ground ball to start the eighth.

Surviving the eighth would be the key moment of the game for the Rays. Dan Wheeler took over for Garza and allowed a single to Coco Crisp before Pedroia flew out to left for the first out. J.P. Howell then entered the game and got David Ortiz to hit into a fielder's choice for the second out.

Rays manager Joe Maddon then called for Chad Bradford to pitch to Kevin Youkilis, who drew a walk to load the bases. David Price became the fifth and final Rays pitcher of the inning when the 23-year-old rookie left-hander was brought in to pitch to J.D. Drew, and he struck him out to end the inning.

Jon Lester started for the Red Sox and was perfect through three innings before Akinori Iwamura singled to lead off the fourth. After Carlos Pena hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, Evan Longoria doubled down the right-field line and Pena scored from first to tie the score at 1.

Aybar led off the Rays' fifth with a double to left and Dioner Navarro followed with an infield single. Rocco Baldelli then singled home Aybar to put the Rays up, 2-1.

The Red Sox tried to answer in the sixth when Pedroia walked with one out. But Garza rose to the occasion by striking out Ortiz, and Navarro threw out Pedroia attempting to steal to complete the double play.

Aybar then homered off Lester to lead off the seventh to push the Rays' lead to 3-1.

Rays in familiar spot after narrow loss
Kazmir's early struggles costly in Game 1 against Phillies

By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

ST. PETERSBURG -- Taking the hard road just seems to be the Rays' way.

On just the 14th pitch of the game Wednesday night, Philadelphia's Chase Utley drove a Scott Kazmir pitch over the right-field wall to give the Phillies the lead in Game 1 of the 2008 World Series at Tropicana Field.

Not exactly the way you want to start your first World Series game. The Phillies never relinquished the lead and held on for a 3-2 victory.

"It's not like I was overamped or anything," Kazmir said. "[It was] just one bad pitch. I felt like if I had thrown it outside, I would have had a better result."

Game 2 will be played at The Trop at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.

The Phillies' win negated the Rays' home-field advantage in the Fall Classic while also putting the odds in their favor, as 10 of the last 11 winners of Game 1 have gone on to win the World Series.

The star of the game was Philadelphia's Cole Hamels, who allowed just two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five in seven innings to pick up the win.

"He came out and proved why he is their No. 1," Evan Longoria said. "His changeup was in the zone and where it needed to be. ... We knew he was good, but I didn't know he was that good. He proved a lot to me today. He made pitches all day. And like I say, it's what a No. 1 does."

Kazmir, who has been prone to first-inning struggles throughout the 2008 season, got in and out of several jams during his six innings, but allowed just three runs on six hits. He struck out four, but also walked four.

B.J. Upton helped Kazmir escape a second-inning jam. After the Phillies loaded the bases with one out, Shane Victorino tried to score on Jimmy Rollins' short flyout to center field, but Upton threw him out at the plate to complete the inning-ending double play.

"I knew it was a little shallow, and with his speed, I knew he'd probably take a chance," Upton said. "I just wanted to make a nice solid throw, give [catcher Dioner Navarro] a nice hop and give him a chance at him."

In the third, Jayson Werth doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a groundout before Kazmir struck out Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell to end the inning.

Kazmir allowed the leadoff man to reach for the third consecutive inning when Victorino singled to start the fourth. He scored when Carlos Ruiz grounded out to short with one out to put the Phillies up, 3-0.

The Rays' big chance to get to Hamels early came in the third, when they loaded bases with one out. But Upton rolled into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

"That's huge," Hamels said. "With the lineup Tampa has, they're very devastating. They can hit the long ball. And that was something I was very aware of, especially with B.J. He's the type of guy that can change a game in an instant. And being able to get that ground-ball out and getting the double play, I think was definitely the kind of momentum swing in our favor for the game."

The Rays finally got to Hamels when Carl Crawford hit a solo home run with two outs in the fourth. They added another run in the fifth on Akinori Iwamura's two-out RBI double to cut the Phillies' lead to 3-2.

After Hamels departed, the Philadelphia bullpen retired the Rays' last six hitters in order -- three on strikeouts.

The Rays now find themselves in the same predicament they were in after Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, which they lost to the Red Sox at Tropicana Field to go down, 0-1.

"For us, 0-1, it's like being down 0-1 in the count if you're the batter," J.P. Howell said. "You're not too worried, but at the same time, you saw what they have. You've got to prepare and adjust. They're very aggressive on the basepaths. That's something I didn't know about them. And those guys, they battle, it's a different league. Their approaches are just different. It's a feel thing."

Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett noted that his club has been an underdog all season.

"This is nothing different," Bartlett said. "You still see guys walking around with a smile. We're down 0-1 in the World Series, but we're not getting down on ourselves."

According to Cliff Floyd, there's a secret to why the Rays don't get down on themselves after losses.

"We go out and play our hearts out," Floyd said. "So you can't say this team doesn't really want it. We play our hearts out and leave it on the field."

So the Rays will now turn to Game 2 starter James Shields to try to even things up Thursday night.

Shields has "just got to do what he's been doing," Howell said. "It's nothing exceptional. We don't need anything great, amazing, a no-hitter. We need him to go seven strong. If he does that, he puts us in a good situation to take charge and get the lead."

If he is to be the Rays' salvation Thursday night, Shields did not show any signs of pressure after Wednesday night's game.

"We've been doing this all year," Shields said. "I thought Kaz pitched a great game tonight. Quality start, 3-2 game, can't get a closer game than that.

"I thought we looked good. Cole Hamels, pretty good pitcher, you have to tip your cap to him. He's been doing it this whole [postseason]. That's the reason he's their ace. [It was a] tough loss."

Shields then answered the question all Rays fans want to know: Why does it take a shot to the gut to get the Rays going?

"I guess it kind of wakes us up a little bit," said Shields with a chuckle. "Let's hope so."

Long night ends with Rays' loss
Throwing error in ninth helps Phillies take 2-1 Series lead

By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- After battling back to tie the score in the eighth inning, the Rays fell to the Phillies, 5-4, on Saturday night in Game 3 of the World Series as the Phils manufactured a run in the bottom of the ninth with a hit batsman, a wild pitch, a throwing error and a slow roller down the third-base line.

The Phils take a 2-1 Series lead into Sunday's Game 4.

After a 91-minute rain delay, Game 3 started at 10:06 p.m. ET, marking the latest start in World Series history behind a 9:24 p.m. first pitch on Oct. 19, 1993, also in Philadelphia. But the delay did little to dampen the spirits of a raucous, white towel-waving crowd of 45,900.

The Phillies' ninth-inning rally began when Rays reliever J.P. Howell hit Eric Bruntlett with a pitch to lead off the ninth. Grant Balfour took over for Howell to face Shane Victorino, who tried to put down a sacrifice bunt. But Balfour threw a wild pitch that allowed Bruntlett to go all the way to third as Rays catcher Dioner Navarro fielded the ball on a ricochet and then threw wildly past second base.

Victorino was then intentionally walked, as was pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs. With no outs and the bases loaded, the Rays used five infielders, bringing in Ben Zobrist from right field to play between shortstop and second in the drawn-in infield. Carlos Ruiz then hit a dribbler to third baseman Evan Longoria, who could not make a play at home as Bruntlett scored the winning run.

"That happens in the ninth," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Of course, the hit batter is not optimal, and the wild pitch and getting to third really creates a lot of havoc in a very difficult moment. Other than that, I thought we played a great game tonight."

Maddon also defended Longoria's decision to field Ruiz's dribbler, rather than wait to see if the ball would go foul.

"The grass is relatively thick," Maddon said. "I don't think it would have gone foul. I don't know that, but I don't think so. I didn't even think of it. I really thought to myself, 'How is he going to throw this ball?' Because barehanded, there's no way to get on top and throw. It's a really awkward play and he did the best that he could. It's just an unfortunate situation."

Jimmy Rollins singled and Jayson Werth walked against Rays starter Matt Garza to start the Phillies' first. Garza's wild pitch allowed both runners to advance before Chase Utley grounded out to drive in Rollins and put the Phillies up, 1-0.

Carl Crawford led off the Rays' second with a bloop double to left. One out later, he stole third base and scored on Gabe Gross' sacrifice fly to center field that tied the game at 1.

Ruiz hit a 1-0 Garza pitch into the left-field stands with two outs in the second to put the Phillies up, 2-1.

Utley led off the bottom half of the sixth with his second home run of the Series, and Ryan Howard followed with his first home run of the Fall Classic to put the Phillies up, 4-1.

Crawford bunted to lead off the seventh and appeared to be out when Moyer flipped the ball to Howard at first, but first-base umpire Tom Hallion called Crawford safe. Dioner Navarro doubled to put runners on second and third for Gross, who grounded out to first to drive home his second run of the game. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel then went to the bullpen.

Chad Durbin took over for Moyer, and Jason Bartlett managed a slow roller to shortstop that scored Navarro from third to cut the Phillies' lead to 4-3.

B.J. Upton led off the eighth with an infield single off Ryan Madson. After stealing second base, Upton stole third and scored to tie the game at 4 when Ruiz's throw was wild.

Upton's two steals in the eighth gave him three for the game to tie a World Series record last accomplished by Lou Brock in the 1968 World Series. Additionally, Upton became the first American League player to accomplish the feat.

World Series schedule uncertain
Wet weather in Philly forces 'day-to-day' approach

By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- Game 5 of the World Series will continue at Citizens Bank Park whenever "weather conditions are appropriate," Commissioner Bud Selig said on Monday night.

What that does to the remaining World Series schedule is still uncertain, said Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball's president and chief operating officer.

The Phillies lead the best-of-seven Series, 3-1, and if they win the game that was suspended Monday with the score tied, 2-2, heading into the bottom of the sixth, they would capture the second World Series title in franchise history. But should Tampa Bay prevail once play resumes, the schedule for Games 6 and 7 could be altered, depending upon when the game is completed.

There has never been a rain-shortened game in Series history, and this was the first suspension.

"We'll look at it on a day-to-day basis," said DuPuy. "No decision has been made as to the off-day yet, assuming Tampa Bay won, whether we would kill the travel day or whether we would have a travel day and then pick up the series in Tampa Bay.

"Some of that depends on the day we play and the ability to get accommodations and travel."

If the game is completed Tuesday night and the Rays win, the travel day might be canceled and Games 6 and 7 would be played as scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday night at Tropicana Field.

If Game 5 resumes on Wednesday or later in the week in Philadelphia, the games in St. Petersburg would need to be moved back and a travel day might be utilized.

DuPuy said after reading the current weather reports that "it doesn't look good" for playing on Tuesday night.

Contingency plans already were made on Saturday night when Game 3 was delayed an hour and 31 minutes and began at 10:06 p.m. ET. The Phils won that game, 5-4, in the bottom of the ninth.

"If we were rained out on Saturday night, we were going to play Monday, Tuesday, not have a travel day, and play in St. Pete on Wednesday and Thursday," DuPuy said. "So I believe that's still the way we'd go if somehow we get this in on Tuesday and Tampa Bay wins.

"If we don't play tomorrow I don't know what's going to happen with the travel day. That's still a matter of consideration."

Dream season ends in disappointment
Rays eliminated by Phillies after resumption of Fall Classic

By Bill Chastain / MLB.com

PHILADELPHIA -- The Rays' miraculous 2008 season came to an end Wednesday night as the Phillies claimed their first World Series championship since 1980 with a 4-3 victory in the long-awaited conclusion to Game 5 at Citizens Bank Park.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of this group," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "This is the beginning of a great era for Rays baseball."

Forty-six hours had passed since Game 5 was delayed at 10:40 p.m. ET Monday night -- and later suspended -- when pinch-hitter Geoff Jenkins stepped into the batter's box at 8:40 p.m. to resume the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Grant Balfour, who had successfully retired three Phillies in the bottom of the fifth before play was suspended on Monday, returned to the mound for the Rays and went to a 3-2 count before Jenkins doubled to right-center field.

With just three innings to go, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel elected to have Jimmy Rollins bunt, and he successfully sacrificed Jenkins to third to bring Jayson Werth to the plate. The right-handed-hitting Werth blooped a ball into center field, where it barely eluded second baseman Akinori Iwamura to drive home the go-ahead run that put the Phillies up, 3-2.

Rocco Baldelli answered for the Rays with one out in the top of the seventh when he homered off Ryan Madson to tie the game at 3.

"I was just looking for a fastball first pitch," Baldelli said. "I got it. I know he's got a good fastball and it rides in on the righties. I just tried to pull my hands inside and stay on top of the ball. And that was it. I was just lucky to square it up. I think every home run is luck. You just have to square it up the right way. You don't have to swing that hard, it just goes."

Citizens Bank Park went silent while Baldelli made his way around the bases, fueling the Rays' hopes of forcing a Game 6 in St. Petersburg on Thursday night.

The quiet is "a good feeling," Baldelli said. "It's not really a feeling you get playing in regular-season games very often. It's just kind of [like] the place was as loud as it could possibly be, then it was as quiet as it could possibly be. So I think the atmosphere in the stadium definitely affects the momentum out on the field."

When Jason Bartlett followed with a single, the Rays looked as though they might keep the rally going. With the score tied, Maddon elected to let reliever J.P. Howell stay in the game and hit because he liked the matchups for the left-hander all the way through Pat Burrell, who would lead off the seventh for the Phillies.

Howell executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to send Bartlett to second, setting up what turned out to be one of the most critical plays of the game.

Iwamura hit a ball that Chase Utley backhanded at second base. Utley realized he would not get Iwamura at first, so he faked a throw to first and then cut loose with an off-balance throw to the plate. Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz grabbed the throw and made a nice tag on the sliding Bartlett for the third out.

"I was just running hard and [third-base coach Tom] Foley sent me and I tried to score," Bartlett said. "It's a hard baseball play. If I'm not hustling, maybe he stops me. But that's how you should play, hustle all the time.

"I didn't have any idea [if the ball had gone through]. It's just something where I'm going hard and I don't know if Aki beats it out or Utley bobbles it. I don't know what happened, to tell you the truth. I don't know if he dove for it or what. I'll do that every time."

Howell, who was almost as effective pitching to right-handers as left-handers throughout the 2008 season, looked like a sound option against Burrell, who was 0-for-13 in the World Series when he stepped into the box. Only Burrell made the move look like the wrong one by stroking a double off the wall in center field, just missing a home run.

Eric Bruntlett pinch-ran for Burrell and moved to third when Shane Victorino grounded out to second against Rays reliever Chad Bradford. Pedro Feliz then threaded a single up the middle against a drawn-in Rays infield to drive home Bruntlett and give the Phillies a 4-3 lead.

Though they trailed, the Rays did not go gently. Carl Crawford singled to lead off the eighth, but B.J. Upton hit into a double play. Carlos Pena then lined out to end the inning, putting the Phillies within three outs of a title.

Brad Lidge took the mound for the Phillies in the ninth. The Phillies closer had not blown a save all season. Dioner Navarro singled with one out and Fernando Perez pinch-ran for the Rays catcher, immediately stealing second to put the tying run at second base with one out.

"I was just kind of out there hoping for some magic," said the speedy Perez, who was ready to dart home on the crack of the bat.

Switch-hitter Ben Zobrist was inserted as a pinch-hitter for Baldelli, and he responded with a hard line drive to right field. Unfortunately for the Rays, the ball went directly to Werth in right field for the second out.

"I knew when I hit it, I hit it pretty hard," Zobrist said. "I was hoping that it would knock down a little bit. But I saw it was right at him right off the bat."

Lidge then struck out pinch-hitter Eric Hinske to preserve the win, notch his 48th save since Opening Day and end the Rays' season.

Game 5 initially started in rainy conditions Monday night at Citizens Bank Park with a crowd of 45,940 watching. The nasty weather conditions progressed to the point where the game went to a rain delay after the Rays had just tied the game at 2 in the top of the sixth. At 11:10 p.m., the game was officially suspended. Bad weather continued in Philadelphia all day Tuesday, delaying the resumption of Game 5 until Wednesday night.

Cole Hamels, who started Game 5 on Monday, and was the winning pitcher in Game 1, won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.

Always philosophical, Maddon said the World Series experience "stretched" his team's mind.

"I don't think our guys are ever going to be satisfied going home in October again," he said. "This whole experience has permitted us to grow. Like I said, and being around the last couple of years, if you had been there to follow us closely and see what the culture was like two years ago and what it's like now, the word is remarkable, to be able to come that far that quickly.

"So for me, for us, I believe this firmly, our guys are not going to be satisfied without playing in October from now on."
