Mariners' Beltre joins Drew in hitting for cycle
Mariners third baseman Adrian Beltre joined Stephen Drew of the Diamondbacks in hitting for the cycle on Monday.
It was the first time two players hit for the cycle on the same day since Sept. 17, 1920, when Bobby Veach of the Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants did it, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. | |

Drew delivers cycle in D-backs' win Shortstop's five hits set career high, tie franchise record By Steve Gilbert / MLB.com
PHOENIX -- D-backs fans may remember Monday's game for the history that was made -- Stephen Drew hitting for the cycle -- or not made -- the realization that Randy Johnson will not be able to reach 300 wins this year.
But more important, the D-backs' 8-6 comeback win over the Cardinals at Chase Field might end up being remembered as the game that got Arizona headed in the right direction after a disappointing weekend.
After beating the Dodgers on Friday to go up 4 1/2 games in the National League West, the D-backs had a chance to put Los Angeles in a deep hole with aces Dan Haren and Brandon Webb going in the final two games.
Instead, the Dodgers won both games to pull to within 2 1/2 as the calendar flipped to September.
"L.A. won two out of three and it was a tough series and today we were behind, but everybody just kind of pulled together and it was a great team effort," Drew said. "Everybody contributed."
Indeed, Drew gets the highlights for his 5-for-5 day to set a career high for hits in a game while also tying the franchise record, but there were plenty of others.
Reliever Jailen Peguero came on in relief of Johnson in the fourth with the bases loaded, two outs and the Cardinals threatening to add to their 5-2 lead.
Instead, the right-hander got Troy Glaus to pop out to end the frame and then pitched a scoreless fifth as the D-backs climbed to within 5-4.
"Peguero's outs were huge," D-backs manager Bob Melvin said.
So was the two-run homer by Mark Reynolds in the sixth that tied the score at 6.
Then in the seventh, pinch-hitter Jeff Salazar once again came through with a clutch pinch-hit single to lead off the inning.
Drew followed with the ground-rule double that gave him the cycle and set the stage for infielder David Eckstein, playing in his first game since being acquired from the Blue Jays on Sunday night, to put the D-backs ahead for good with a single to right that scored Salazar.
"You come some place new and you want to go out there and do something for them," said Eckstein, who had a pair of hits and two RBIs. "You never know after last night's game are you going to come in here and be down? The club really responded and I liked what I saw. Every game is so important, especially once you start the month of September. Hopefully, this will help us get going and put us in a better position."
Finally, there was setup man Tony Pena, who had to face Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols with runners on first and second and one out in the eighth. Pena got Pujols to roll over on a pitch for the 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
"It's not the most enviable situation to be in, but Tony's been rolling pretty good and I think he understands if he keeps his sights down and throws the ball on a corner he's got a chance to get a double-play ball, and he did," Melvin said.
As for Johnson, the left-hander remains stuck at 294 career wins and has just five starts left this season, which means he likely will have to wait until 2009 to get to 300.
Johnson, who has pitched well in the second half, allowed five runs on six hits in just 3 2/3 innings. All five of the runs came thanks to four homers, which tied for the most he has allowed in a game.
"Probably location," Melvin said of why Johnson struggled. "It looked like his stuff was pretty good. His fastball looked pretty good. You don't see teams hit his slider too much and they hit a few sliders today, which means it was probably up and not getting to his spot, which is down and in to right-handers."
The D-backs experienced a scare in the eighth when right fielder Justin Upton was struck in the head by an errant pickoff throw while diving back to first base. The ball struck Upton just below his protective batting helmet, slightly behind and below his right ear.
Upton at first tried to get up to possibly advance to second, but once he got to one knee, he fell back down to the ground in obvious pain. He was removed from the game and said afterward that he was feeling better and did not think he had suffered a concussion.
"I was a little dizzy right after I got hit, but I hung out in the trainer's room for a little bit just to get myself back together," he said. "It was definitely a scary moment."

| 09/02/2008 12:39 AM ET Beltre hits for cycle against Rangers Mariners third baseman has five hits, scores five times By Jim Street / MLB.com
ARLINGTON -- When Adrian Beltre stepped into the batter's box in the eighth inning Monday night, the Mariners third baseman had no idea he needed a triple to become the fourth player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.
But even if he did, he probably would have laughed it off.
In his first 520 official at-bats this season, Beltre had 84 singles, 28 doubles, 24 home runs and no triples.
He couldn't have picked a better time to hit a line drive into right-center field, easily dashing to third base to complete a rare cycle -- single, double, triple and home run in the same game.
"I didn't know," he said after the Mariners finished off their 12-6 victory over the Rangers. "I hit the ball and I was running, because I didn't know if [Josh] Hamilton was going to get it. When I saw the ball was going deep, I knew I had a chance to go to third, and I just took it."
The dash to third base enabled him to join some select company in Mariners history and put himself alone in the record book for being the first Seattle player to get five hits and score five runs in one game.
Jay Buhner (June 23, 1993), Alex Rodriguez (June 5, 1997) and John Olerud (June 16, 2001) are the only other Mariners to hit for the cycle.
Beltre, who grounded out in the ninth inning, hit a home run in the second inning, singled in the fourth and sixth innings, doubled in the seventh and completed the cycle with his three-bagger in the eighth.
"I can't explain it," he said when asked what kind of feeling he had from the rare accomplishment. "It's something that I've seen people do, and it's pretty cool. I have had situations before where I had a chance, and I didn't do it. Today, it feels good. It's something special. It's good to be one of those guys to do it. I'm proud of it."
The fourth cycle in club history also was the second of the day in the Major Leagues, something that had not happened in more than 87 years.
In an afternoon game played in Phoenix, Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew also hit for the cycle. It marks the first time two players did it on the same day since Sept. 17, 1920, when Bobby Veach of the Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants did it.
"It's fun to watch something like that," Mariners outfielder Jeremy Reed said. "That was pretty impressive to watch right there. The thing that is more impressive is he didn't even know about it. I knew about because I was on the bench watching most of the game.
"I knew he needed a triple, and to see him go out there and get it, that's pretty cool. He hit it at the best part of the field to get it, and with all the things he has been through, with injuries, it's pretty awesome for him to do that. He's an inspiration to everybody else."
Manager Jim Riggleman also saluted Beltre's toughness.
"He's the toughest ballplayer I've ever seen. He plays through nagging injuries; he plays through pain; he's an animal out there," Riggleman said. "He is getting some numbers that reflect just how great of a player he really is, and I'm thrilled for him. It's a great accomplishment, something that he can put another notch on his gun belt. But his bigger body of work is a greater accomplishment than that."
Beltre's five hits tied his single-game best, accomplished two other times and most recently on July 6, 2007, against the Athletics. The five runs he scored Monday night were a career high.
"He has done so many great things, like win a Gold Glove, hit 48 homers a few years ago, have a 200-hit season, and now hit for the cycle," Riggleman said. "He has done so many things, but whether he hits or not, Adrian Beltre is such a force on this ballclub for us."
The force definitely was with him on this night.
