| Guillen out with pinched nerve in back Tigers third baseman day-to-day after undergoing MRI By Scott McNeish / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Tigers third baseman Carlos Guillen said an MRI exam he underwent on Tuesday night revealed a pinched nerve in his lower back. He will rest for the next two or three days before considering a return to the lineup. Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn't know when to anticipate Guillen's return.
"No idea," Leyland said in a swift pregame press session.
Guillen, who has experienced back trouble twice in the last six days, reported numbing pain in his right lower back, right leg and right foot. He said he has trouble lifting his right leg, which hinders his ability to run and hit.
A three-time All-Star, Guillen said he has felt the pain for about one week, but the pain just recently became unbearable.
Ramon Santiago started at third in place of Guillen in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Brandon Inge and Ryan Raburn represent other options Leyland could use while one of his team leaders recovers.

| I've been through that, I know how bad he feels. Hope he grts the correct treatment. I may send him mail about getting a panasonic massage chair. It has kept me away from chiropractors and surgeons ever since we bought one 15 years ago.
They are wonderful.
If you have back problems, even the lowest cost ones are worth the money...

Confidential medical information? You mean like those people that were recently fired for disclosing Granholm's medical reports | |

| 08/26/2008 8:12 PM ET Guillen concerned about back spasms Tigers third baseman feels soreness, numbness in hamstrings By Jason Beck / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Carlos Guillen remains listed as day-to-day with lower back spasms that knocked him out of Monday's game. The way Guillen sounded about his injury on Tuesday afternoon, however, he could be out a while.
Asked how he was feeling, Guillen was not upbeat. His description of Monday's back spasms sounded similar to the back problems two weeks ago which turned out to be a pinched nerve and kept him out of action for three days. However, Guillen said, his back had felt pretty good over the weekend before flaring up on Monday.
The discomfort, Guillen said, started in his back and went up and down his right leg. It included soreness in both of his hamstrings, and he felt a little numbness. The latter part could be a concern.
Manager Jim Leyland said on Tuesday afternoon he had no clearer picture of how long Guillen will be out. However, he stuck by his thought process from Monday night that Guillen will at least miss a couple games to let his back settle down.
While Guillen remains out, Marcus Thames was back in the Tigers lineup on Tuesday after leaving Monday's game with a cramp in his left leg. Thames said the cramp popped up when he was running down the first-base line on his seventh-inning single to left, then worsened as he stopped and restarted going from second to third on Edgar Renteria's single.
"I'm all right," said Thames, who started in left field on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, there was no update on Dontrelle Willis, who left Monday's start at Triple-A Toledo after one inning with tightness in his left forearm. The problem supposedly surfaced Monday before the game and carried into the outing, at which point the Tigers decided not to take any chances.
