The event is Cornerstone's primary fund-raising event, and more than 8,000 supports are participating. Cornerstone Schools is an independent, faith-based school association with three campuses in Detroit, serving children from pre-K through 8th grade. Representatives from Cornerstone Schools will take part in an on-field, pre-game ceremony, sing the National Anthem, and throw a ceremonial first pitch.

Tuesday, Sept. 9

The first 10,000 fans age 21-and-older in attendance, will receive a free Tigers Adult Cap, courtesy of Budweiser.

As part of the "Play Baseball Detroit" initiative, the Detroit Tigers, the Baseball Tomorrow Fund, FSN Detroit, 97.1 The Ticket and ABC Warehouse teamed up to collect new and gently used baseball and softball equipment throughout the season to help support the Eagle Sports Club of Detroit. The Gloves For Kids program collected over 2,800 pieces of equipment including 561 gloves and 296 bats. During an on-field, pregame ceremony, the Eagle Sports Club will receive a financial contribution of $3,700 from the Detroit Tigers. In addition to the equipment donation and the financial contribution, the Eagle Sports Club will receive a $5,000 grant from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund to purchase new equipment.

Tuesday is also Autism Awareness Day at Comerica Park. Close to 1,000 families, friends and supporters of Jack's Place for Autism will attend the game against Oakland through the Detroit Tigers Fundraising Ticket Program and the Community Affairs department.

Wednesday, Sept. 10

The first 10,000 fans in attendance, will receive a free Detroit Tigers Mouse Pad, courtesy of InkStop.

At every Wednesday home game, Carlos Guillen invites 20 fans to Comerica Park to watch batting practice on the field and provides tickets for the game, along with Carlos Companñeros T-shirts. This week Tigers infielder Carlos Guillen will host youths from Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.

Esurance will present a check worth $7,500 to the Detroit Tigers Foundation during an on-field, pregame ceremony. The second year through the Doubles and Triples program, Esurance donated $22 for every double and $33 for every triple hit by the Tigers.

Todd Jones announces retirement
Tigers to honor all-time saves leader in pre-game ceremony on Saturday

DETROIT -- Tigers pitcher Todd Jones today announced his retirement after 16 seasons at the Major League level, including eight with the Detroit Tigers.

"This is the culmination of 35 years in baseball for me," Jones said. "Detroit was a big part of my career and I'll be a Tiger through and through. From the bottom of my heart, I can't express what it was like to be a Tiger."

Jones is the franchise leader with 235 saves in a Tigers uniform and ranks 14th in major league history with 319 career saves. He became the 21st pitcher in major league history to top the 300-save plateau on September 16, 2007 at the Metrodome against the Minnesota Twins. Additionally, Jones is the club's single-season saves leader, posting 42 saves and winning the Rolaids Relief Man Award in 2000. Jones was also selected to the American League's all-star squad in 2000.

The Tigers will hold a pre-game ceremony on Saturday to honor Jones and his contributions to the Detroit Tigers. FSN Detroit's John Keating will emcee the ceremony, which will begin on the field at approximately 6:50 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out to the park early to pay tribute to the Tigers' all-time saves leader.

Tickets are available at the Comerica Park Box Office, online at www.tigers.com, by phone at (866) 66-TIGER (84437), at 32 Detroit-area Meijer stores and at Hockeytown Authentics, located at 1845 E. Big Beaver Road, in Troy.

Tigers wives hit home run with baseball children's book

DETROIT -- Wives of the Detroit Tigers baseball players have written "The ABCs of Detroit Tigers Baseball," a children's book that covers the game of baseball from A to Z. The book is illustrated by Bryan Durren and Craig Jablonski, two graphic designers from Ilitch-owned Little Caesars. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book benefits the Detroit Tigers Foundation, the official charity of the Detroit Tigers.

"It was such an honor having the opportunity to work with the other wives and to contribute to the book," said Shani Inge, wife of Tigers' catcher/infielder Brandon Inge. "I hope Tigers fans and their families have as much fun reading this book as we did putting it together."

"'The ABCs of Detroit Tigers Baseball' is for fans young and old," said Mike Bayoff, director of publishing and new media for Olympia Entertainment. "It's an exciting way for children to learn the alphabet and, at the same time, learn about the game of baseball as well as some little-known Detroit Tigers trivia and history."

The 29-page, hardcover book, includes Spanish-language translation of each English term, and features colorful illustrations that define the game of baseball from A to Z. In addition, each page includes a related 'Tiger Tidbit' such as historical records, fun facts or player records. There are also two pages especially for autographs.

"There are so many positive aspects to doing a book like this," explained Bayoff. "Not only do we generate enthusiasm about reading, the game of baseball and the Detroit Tigers, but we also raise important funds for the Detroit Tigers Foundation, which is dedicated to enhancing lives through the sport of baseball."

The book retails for $14.95, and is now available at Borders, Barnes and Noble and Comerica Park.

'Willie Horton Day' celebrated in Michigan on Saturday

DETROIT -- For the fifth consecutive year, the state of Michigan will recognize one man's ability to overcome obstacles and achieve a lifetime of a success when "Willie Horton Day" is celebrated on Saturday, October 18.

Horton, who serves as a Special Assistant to Tigers President, CEO & General Manager David Dombrowski, received this honor in 2004 when Governor Jennifer Granholm signed House Bill No. 5200, which declares October 18 of each year to be known as "Willie Horton Day." The legislature chose to recognize the seven-time All-Star for his humanitarian efforts in the city and the state. The date of the honor also coincides with his birthday.

The youngest of 21 children, Horton was born on October 18, 1942 in Arno, Virginia. At the age of nine, Horton's family moved to Detroit. By 13, he was turning the heads of area baseball scouts and on August 6, 1961, he became a member of his hometown team when he signed his first professional contract with the Tigers after an outstanding career at Detroit's Northwestern High School.

His 18-year big league career included 14 seasons with the Tigers and he was an important part of the 1968 World Championship team. A lifetime .273 hitter, Horton had 1,993 hits, 325 home runs and 1,163 RBI over 2,028 games.

Among the many honors he has received in his lifetime, Horton's uniform number 23 was retired and a Comerica Park statue in his likeness was unveiled by the Tigers on July 15, 2000. On August 6, 2004, Detroit Northwestern High School named their newly constructed baseball and softball fields as the Willie Horton Baseball and Softball Diamonds. A monument in Horton's honor was installed at the fields in 2005.

On June 14, 2006, the Army honored Willie with one of the highest Military awards to a civilian, and the first professional athlete awarded the Order of Saint Maurice. His loyal support and distinguished contributions have been ongoing for many years to our Military.

I am sure they have gotten new chairs for the players; And I bet the ones they sell will be for former players; Todd Jones, Kenny Rogers; Jacque Jones; They probably have a Chuck Hernandez chair for sale also

In addition; They replaced the Tiger Den seats before Opening Day 2008

They had a couple old Tiger Den Seats for sale in the authentics Kiosk the last weekend of the season.

I bet they have those for sale

Rick Knapp named Tigers pitching coach

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the organization has hired Rick Knapp as the club's pitching coach.

Knapp joins the Tigers Major League coaching staff after spending the previous 12 seasons as the Minor League pitching coordinator for the Minnesota Twins. He first joined the Twins organization in 1996 as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Twins.

"Rick is a quality baseball person and he will be a solid addition to our staff," Tigers Manager Jim Leyland said. "He brings an excellent track record of developing major league caliber pitchers."

Knapp began his coaching career as the pitching coach at Single A Gastonia in the Texas Rangers organization in 1988. He served as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Rangers the next four seasons (1989-92), before serving in that capacity with Triple A Oklahoma City in both 1993 and 1994. Knapp spent his final season with the Rangers organization as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast League Rangers in 1995.

"I'm extremely excited to join the Tigers organization," Knapp said. "I look forward to working with Jim, the rest of the coaching staff and the talented pitchers throughout the system."

He pitched five seasons at the Minor League level with the Rangers after being selected by the club in the 41st round of the 1983 draft out of Virginia Tech University. Knapp earned a degree in sociology from Virginia Tech University.

Knapp resides in Port Charlotte, FL with his wife, Sharon and their daughter, Leah and son, Ricky.

Michigan environmental web site goes online with a Tigers roar

DETROIT -- The Michigan Green Schools Organization today announced it will launch its environmental web site, and has formed a fundraising partnership with the Detroit Tigers, to benefit the Save the Tiger Fund through the Pennies for Paws initiative.

Starting today, 200 plus schools can now log on to www.Michigangreenschools.org to receive the latest information about the rapidly growing program established under Michigan Public Act 146 in 2006.

The Detroit Tigers are inviting all schools to raise funds for Pennies for Paws in an effort to protect the world's remaining 5,000 tigers in their natural habitat. Classrooms that raise the most funds for tiger preservation will receive the opportunity to attend a 2009 Detroit Tigers game and participate in an on-field ceremony. To register your classroom, visit www.Michigangreenschools.org or www.tigers.com/penniesforpaws .

The newly created web site will enable member and prospective schools throughout Michigan to review the twenty points of the Michigan Green School Program. The web site will offer new environmental activities and methods for implementation, along with information on threatened and endangered species native to Michigan.

From the web site, schools will be able to learn how to hold solar cooking classes, make door draft guards, recycle items, and ways to protect the Great Lakes.

Michigan Green Schools is a program created by the Hartland High School Environmental science class and teachers when Governor Jennifer Granholm signed the bill in December 2006. Under the program any Michigan public or private school may become an official Michigan Green School by completing 10 of the suggested twenty environmental educational activities by March 17, 2009.

Created in 2008, Pennies for Paws is a fundraising initiative of the Save the Tiger Fund of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. With only 5,000 tigers remaining in their natural habitat, the program is intended to raise awareness of the endangered species and aid in efforts to save the Detroit Tigers team namesake. Funds collected through the program will support necessary work of the Save the Tiger Fund to aid in tiger conservation.

Tigers re-hire Jeff Jones as bullpen coach
Tanner promoted to Major League Scout; Team declined Renteria's option and outrighted Glover and Sardinha

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the organization has re-hired Jeff Jones as the club's bullpen coach, completing Jim Leyland's staff for the 2009 season. Additionally, the Tigers today announced Bruce Tanner has been promoted to Major League scout, while the club today also officially declined to exercise the 2009 option of shortstop Edgar Renteria and outrighted the contracts of righthanded pitcher Gary Glover and catcher Dane Sardinha to Triple A Toledo.

Jones served as the club's bullpen coach the past two seasons, marking his fifth stint in that capacity with the Tigers. In addition to the last two years, he spent the 1995 season, the final month of the 1998 season and all of 1999 as the club's bullpen coach, in addition to joining the Major League staff to serve the remainder of the season in that role on both September 7, 2000 and April 9, 2002.

"We are pleased to have Jeff Jones on the coaching staff for the upcoming season," Leyland said. "Jeff has done a tremendous job for the Tigers organization over the years. After talking with both Jeff and Rick Knapp this week in Detroit, we felt Jeff was the best fit to be the club's bullpen coach."

Prior to joining Detroit's Major League coaching staff for the 2007 season, Jones most recently served as the pitching coach at Triple A Toledo for seven seasons (2000-06). He also served in that role with Toledo in 1990, 1993-94 and 1997-98. Jones began his professional coaching career with the Tigers organization in 1989, when he served as the pitching coach at Single A Fayetteville. Additionally, he spent two seasons as the pitching coach at Double A London (1991-92) and one season as the pitching coach at Double A Jacksonville (1996).

"I've been part of the Tigers organization for a long time and I'm happy to be returning to the staff as the bullpen coach," Jones said. "I look forward to working with Jim, Rick and the rest of the staff to get the Tigers back on top of the baseball world again."

Tanner spent the past two seasons as the club's advance scout after joining the organization. Prior to joining the Tigers, Tanner spent 13 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates in various capacities. Additionally, he saw action in 10 games with the Chicago White Sox during the 1985 season.

Renteria batted .270 (136-for-503) with 22 doubles, 10 home runs and 55 RBI in 138 games with the Tigers during the 2008 season after being acquired from Atlanta in a three-player deal on October 29, 2007. Renteria is now a free agent and eligible to sign with any of the 30 Major League organizations.

Signed by the Tigers as a minor league free agent on August 9, Glover compiled a 1-1 record and 4.43 ERA (20.1IP/10ER) in 18 outings with the club in 2008.

Sardinha split the 2008 season between Detroit and Toledo. He hit .159 (7-for-44) with three RBI in 17 games with the Tigers, while he batted .202 (37-for-183) with six home runs and 18 RBI in 54 games with Toledo.

Glover and Sardinha have both elected free agency and are now eligible to sign with any of the 30 Major League organizations.

Miguel Cabrera named Tiger of the Year by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America

DETROIT -- First baseman Miguel Cabrera has been selected as the Tiger of the Year for 2008 in voting by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Cabrera batted .292 (180x616) with 36 doubles, two triples, 37 home runs and 127 RBI in his first season with the Tigers. He led the American League with the 37 home runs, becoming the first Tigers player to lead the league in home runs since Cecil Fielder tied for the lead with 44 home runs in 1991.

He tied for the league lead with 331 total bases, while he finished third with 127 RBI, fifth with 75 extra-base hits and seventh with a .537 slugging percentage. According to STATS, Inc., his 127 RBI marked the third-highest total by a Tigers player in his first season with the club, trailing Dale Alexander's 137 RBI in 1929 and Cecil Fielder's 132 RBI in 1990.

Cabrera was twice tabbed American League Player of the Week during the 2008 season. He shared the honor with Manny Ramirez during the week of April 14-20, while earning the honor outright during the week of July 21-27. He was also named American League Player of the Month during July after batting .330 (35x106) with 15 runs scored, six doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI in 25 games during the month.

He collected his 1,000th career hit on Sept. 7 at Minnesota, a solo home run in the sixth inning off Glen Perkins. According to STATS, Inc., he became the fifth-youngest player, at 25 years, 142 days old, since 1954 to collect 1,000 career hits.

Tigers promote Tim McWilliam to regional crosschecker

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the organization has promoted Tim McWilliam from area scout to West Coast Regional Crosschecker.

McWilliam joined the Tigers organization as an area scout in Southern California and Hawaii in November of 2004. Prior to joining the Tigers, McWilliam served as area scout with the San Diego Padres organization for nine seasons and as a regional crosschecker for two seasons.

He began his scouting career after playing five seasons (1988-92) as an outfielder at the minor league level with the Padres, including the 1988 season when he hit .451 (82-for-182) to win the batting title in the Arizona League.

As an area scout with the Tigers, McWilliam scouted and signed righthanded pitchers Anthony Claggett and Casey Fien and shortstop Danny Worth. Both Fien and Worth reached Triple A Toledo during the 2008 season, while Claggett was included in the club's trade with the New York Yankees in which Gary Sheffield was acquired on November 10, 2006. Worth was tabbed the eighth-best prospect in the Tigers organization by Baseball America prior to the start of the 2008 season.

McWilliam replaces Joe Ferrone, who left the Tigers organization to join the Pittsburgh Pirates as a special assistant to the general manager.

Tigers southpaw to visit Lindbergh Elementary in Dearborn on Thursday

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers lefthanded pitcher Nate Robertson is scheduled to read "Casey at the Bat" to students at Lindbergh Elementary in Dearborn on Thursday. The reading is part of "The Character of Champions: Covering All the Bases" program, a partnership between the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Free Press Newspapers in Education program and the Michigan K.I.D.S non-profit group. The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue until approximately 2:15 p.m.
In addition to Robertson reading the traditional baseball tale, other special guests will read selections to students at various reading stations. Detroit's favorite mascot PAWS will also be in attendance to entertain students throughout the program.

Tigers continue to offer value with ticket pricing
Club holds pricing on majority of games and continues family-friendly offers

DETROIT -- Attending a Tigers baseball game in 2009 will continue to be a value as the team holds pricing on over 70 percent of ballpark capacity for the upcoming season at Comerica Park. In 2008, the Tigers ranked 21st among the 30 Major League Baseball teams with an average ticket price of $23.36. The Tigers also set a single-season attendance record in 2008 drawing 3,202,645 fans.

The Tigers have made price adjustments for 2009 on less than half of the seats, and will introduce variable pricing on some premium games. There will be no price increases for individual non-premium games in the Outfield Box, Right Field Grandstand, Bleachers, Kaline's Corner and the Upper Level. The lowest priced seat, the $5.00 ticket, remains the same for all 81 games. In addition, the Tigers are holding all prices for their Spring Training games at Joker Merchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida.

"The Tigers historically offer fans and families the most competitive value-priced and affordable sports entertainment option in Detroit and in the state of Michigan," said Tigers President, CEO & General Manager David Dombrowski. "We continue to emphasize the importance of giving families the opportunity to enjoy a day at Comerica Park."

The Tigers will continue to offer a $5.00 Kids Value Meal at every home game. The value meal consists of a hot dog, a bag of chips, a juice box, and a prize. The Tigers also continue to offer family-friendly experiences, promotions, and giveaways throughout the ballpark to entertain the entire family, young and old alike.

Variable Pricing

Variable pricing for individual game tickets, will affect 21 games, including the three-game series with the Cubs and Red Sox, and Friday and Saturday games in June, July, and August, and Opening Day. The premium game price adjustment will range from $2-$7.00. Variable pricing does not include Sunday Kids Days and the three-game series with the New York Yankees.

"Variable pricing has become a growing trend in professional and collegiate sports," said Dombrowski. "Introducing variable pricing for select games allows us to manage the ever increasing costs of operating a professional sports franchise and Major League ballpark. At the same time, we continue to look for more ways to add value for all of our fans and recognize our long-term season ticket holders for the investment they make to our organization."

Season Ticket Packages

More than half of the season ticket locations will be unaffected by the price adjustment. Full season and partial plan ticket holders will continue to enjoy a discount on their seats, and are not affected by variable pricing.

On Sale Date & Home Opener

Season ticket plans are on sale now. Individual game tickets will go on sale on Saturday, March 7. The Tigers will play their 2009 home opener on Friday, April 10 at 1:05 p.m. when they host the Texas Rangers. The Tigers open the 2009 season at Toronto on Monday, April 6.

For complete ticket information visit www.tigers.com or for 2009 season tickets, fans can call (313) 471-BALL (2255).

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced the organization has hired Phil Huttmann as an area scout for Southern California and Hawaii.

Huttmann joins the Tigers organization after spending the last 12 years with the Kansas City Royals. He began his career with the Royals as a part-time scout in the Midwest in 1997, before spending the next two years as the organization's scouting operations coordinator (1998-99). Huttmann spent the last nine years as an area scout in the Midwest for the Royals (2000-08).

He scouted and signed third baseman Alex Gordon during his time with the Royals, while he assisted with the scouting and signing of righthanded pitcher Luke Hochevar.

Huttmann replaces Tim McWilliam as an area scout with the organization. McWilliam was promoted to West Coast Regional Supervisor by the Tigers earlier in November.
