Detroit Tigers "Going, Going Green!"
Free Event Showcasing 'Green' Friendly Causes and Practices

As the Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox, July 24-26, Comerica Park will be "Going, Going, GREEN!" The weekend is designed to educate Tigers fans and the public about how to reduce their carbon footprints, highlight what the Tigers are doing to become more environmentally friendly, and showcase the Michigan green businesses and services of the present and future.

From 12:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the Tigers will host a "Going, Going, GREEN!" Trade Show outside of the Comerica Park main gates. This local, free event is designed for Tigers fans and the public to learn more about green initiatives while viewing products and services related to environmental causes and practices of green businesses. A game ticket is not required to attend the trade show.

On Saturday, from 2-4 p.m., 96.3 WDVD's Blaine Fowler, from the "Blaine and Lisa with Allyson" show, will be on hand to entertain the crowd and giveaway prizes. Later in the evening, he will sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch of Saturday's Tigers game.

On Sunday, Detroit's own "The Wrenfields" and "Jill Jack" will both be performing live. The free music will be on the "Going, Going, GREEN" Trade Show Stage from 1 p.m.-7:45 p.m. "The Wrenfields" will be on stage from 1-1:45 and 3-3:45 p.m., while "Jill Jack" will appear at 5-5:45 and 7-7:45 p.m.

Among those businesses participating will be DTE Energy and its Detroit Edison and MichCon subsidiaries. The company will showcase its GreenCurrents renewable energy program and its new Your Energy Savings initiative that helps customers save money - and the environment - by using less energy. Additionally, several not-for-profit organizations will provide information on how to live green day-to-day, and local vendors will feature their green products and services, covering everything from cleaning supplies and personal care to vehicles, recycling programs, wind power and energy consultants.

The Tigers will use DTE Energy's GreenCurrents program to provide Comerica Park with 100 percent of the electricity powering the ballpark this weekend, offset by Michigan-produced renewable energy. By embracing Michigan based sustainable resources such as wind energy, Comerica Park is helping to reduce air pollutants and create a cleaner environment.

Representatives from the State of Michigan's "No Worker Left Behind Green Jobs Initiative" will be providing information regarding education and training programs available for individuals interested in becoming part of the "green collar" work force. Also, representatives from the Michigan Talent Bank will inform the public about its services for potential employees and employers.

Children can be entertained at the Detroit Science Center's "Launching the Green Machine" program, complete with free handouts and discussions on how to be a caretaker of the Earth by following the three R's: "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle."

Several exhibitors will be offering a variety of GREEN products, from organic cotton clothing and handbags for women (Kika Paprika and The Useful Bag Co.) to personal care and wellness products (Arbonne and Ecostore USA), home cleaning (wowgreen) and even on-line, paperless gift cards (giftzip.com).

During all four games of the Tigers versus White Sox series, fans in attendance will be able to pick up "green living" tips from Sara Snow, Green Living Expert and TV Host, and a native of Ann Arbor. Snow, author of "Sara Snow's Fresh Living," (Bantam Press, 2009) recorded these tips exclusively for "Going, Going, GREEN!" weekend.

The Tigers are pleased to have 96.3 WDVD, Natural Awakenings Magazine and michiganhealthyliving.com as media sponsors of the "Going, Going, GREEN!" weekend and Trade Show.

The Detroit Tigers began making environmentally conscious improvements in 2007 with the installation of the Tiger Den seats, which are comprised of recycled plastic milk jugs. During the offseason, lighting is reduced throughout the ballpark and the HVAC systems are monitored to reduce energy costs. In the future, the Tigers are looking to replace light bulbs with new, high energy rated bulbs which will reduce the number of watts used.

Excess food is packed and then distributed to homeless shelters throughout Metro Detroit. Large recycling containers - resembling a bottle - were placed throughout Comerica Park prior to the season and are used to recycle plastic bottles. All other garbage is taken to a transfer station where recyclables are removed and sent to a recycling company.

During "Going, Going, GREEN! Weekend, watch the Tigers take on the AL Central rival White Sox, July 24-26, with two games on July 24 at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at the Comerica Park Box Office, online at www.tigers.com, by phone at (866) 66-TIGER (84437), at Detroit-area Meijer stores and at Hockeytown Authentics, located at 1845 E. Big Beaver Road in Troy.

SOUTHFIELD, MI - (August 7, 2009) - Comcast, FOX Sports Detroit and the Detroit Tigers today announced that they have partnered to launch FOX Sports Detroit: Tigers On Demand, an innovative feature giving Tigers fans throughout Michigan unprecedented access to complete Tigers game action and related programming anytime they want. FOX Sports Detroit: Tigers On Demand is available at no additional cost to Comcast Digital Cable customers in Michigan starting today.

FOX Sports Detroit: Tigers On Demand provides fans with around-the-clock access on their own televisions to the most recent game telecast, re-aired in its entirety. The game broadcasts will be available On Demand beginning two hours after the end of each contest for a limited period of time.

Additional content currently available at FOX Sports Detroit: Tigers On Demand includes: a selection of baseball memories featuring broadcasting legend Ernie Harwell; the network's acclaimed "Tigers Weekly" special on the late Mark Fidrych titled 'Remembering the Bird,' in memory of the former Tigers pitching phenom; and an installment of "FSN Basement: All-Star Edition" from 2005 featuring lengthy conversations with Tigers legends Al Kaline and George Kell. Also to be included are episodes of "Your Tiger Ticket," a Comcast-exclusive 30-minute program focused on behind-the-scenes stories about the Tigers organization. Comcast, FOX Sports Detroit and the Tigers will collaborate to add additional On Demand content throughout the remainder of the 2009 season and beyond.

"We are excited for our fans to launch Tigers On Demand providing more access to Tigers games, weekly shows and programming thanks to our partners, Comcast and Fox Sports Detroit," said Tigers' Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Steve Harms. "We are committed to adding value for our fans and this new feature offers Tigers Baseball 24/7."

Tigers agree to terms with Brad Thomas
Clay Rapada Traded to the Texas Rangers; Zach Simons Outrighted

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers today announced the club has agreed to terms on a major league contract for the 2010 season with lefthanded pitcher Brad Thomas. Additionally, the club today has traded lefthanded pitcher Clay Rapada to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named later or cash considerations and the team has outrighted the contract of righthanded pitcher Zach Simons to Triple A Toledo.

Thomas spent the past two seasons with Hanwha in the Korean Baseball Organization. He compiled a 5-11 record, 2.86 ERA (113.1IP/36ER), 44 saves and 119 strikeouts in 104 appearances during the two seasons.

"Thomas has performed well over the past two seasons in Korea and we are pleased to add a quality arm like him to our club," Tigers President, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager David Dombrowski said. "He was a highly regarded prospect earlier in his career with the Twins organization and we feel he will contribute out of the bullpen at the major league level."

He saw action at the major league level with the Minnesota Twins over three different seasons (2001, 2003-04). Thomas spent both the 2005 and 2006 seasons pitching in Japan, compiling a 5-6 record, 4.21 ERA (94.0IP/44ER) and 94 strikeouts in 78 outings with the Nippon Ham Fighters.

A native of Sydney, Australia, Thomas pitched for his country at the 2000 Olympic Games and during the World Baseball Classic in 2009.

Rapada spent the majority of the past season with Triple A Toledo, compiling a 4-2 record and 2.76 ERA (45.2IP/14ER) in 42 appearances. He saw action in three games with Detroit during the 2009 season, allowing two runs in 3.1 innings of relief.

Simons split the 2009 season between Double A Erie and Triple A Toledo. In 31 games with Erie, he finished 1-2 with a 2.82 ERA (51.0IP/16ER). Simons posted a 3-0 record and 2.45 ERA (18.1IP/5ER) in 11 outings with Toledo.

Fans can purchase tickets for Detroit's annual winter baseball event this Friday beginning at 10 a.m. on tigers.com/tigerfest or by calling 866-66-TIGER.

In addition to the unique access to players and coaches, fans have the opportunity to tour many exclusive areas of the ballpark, including the Tigers clubhouse, visitor's dugout, Champions Club, Ernie Harwell Media Center and Tigers executive's offices.

Younger Tigers fans can enjoy a "kids-only" autograph booth, face painting, a video game bullpen and even take some major league swings in the Tee Ball batting cage. A miniature Comerica Park will feature book readings by Tigers players, a magic show, interactive games, and photo opportunities with Detroit's favorite mascot, PAWS.

Additional information, including players scheduled to appear, will be announced in early January. For further details and the latest updates, visit tigers.com/tigerfest.

Most access areas within the event will be heated and covered; however, the Tigers encourage all fans to dress according to the weather as some passageways may not be protected from seasonal elements.

Verlander named 'King Tiger' 2009 by Mayo Smith Society members

DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers righthanded pitcher Justin Verlander has won the 2009 King Tiger Award, given each year by the Mayo Smith Society.

Verlander posted a 19-9 record and 3.45 ERA (240.0IP/92ER) during the 2009 season. He led the American League with 35 games started, 240.0 innings pitched, 269 strikeouts and 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings. Additionally, he tied for the league lead with 19 wins, finished third with 4.27 strikeouts per walk, fifth with 10.80 baserunners per nine innings, tied for fifth with three complete games, sixth with a 3.45 ERA and 8.21 hits per nine innings, tied for sixth with a .243 batting average against and eighth with a .679 winning percentage.

Verlander became the first Tigers pitcher to lead the American League in strikeouts since Jack Morris did so in 1983 with 232 strikeouts. His 269 strikeouts stand as the fifth-most in franchise history and mark the most by an American League pitcher since Boston's Pedro Martinez fanned 284 batters during the 2000 season. His 240.0 innings pitched marked the most by a Tigers pitcher since Morris worked 249.2 innings for the Tigers in 1990.

Verlander was also named to the American League all-star team for the second time, and finished third in American League Cy Young Award voting. He earlier won the Tiger of the Year award from the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Also getting King Tiger votes from Mayo Smith Society members were first baseman Miguel Cabrera, third baseman Brandon Inge, righthanded starting pitcher Rick Porcello, outfielder Ryan Raburn and second baseman Placido Polanco.

The Mayo Smith Society, founded in 1983 and named for the manager of the Tigers' 1968 World Series championship club, is a nationwide organization of Tigers fans. Since 2004, it has voted on King Tiger winners based on players' on- the-field and off-the-field endeavors; from 1964 to 1980, the presidents of individual Tigers' fan clubs had voted for their own King Tiger awardees. Mayo Smith Society representatives plan to make the King Tiger presentation to Verlander during the organization's annual trip to Lakeland, Florida, for Spring Training.

Past King Tiger winners as voted on by the Mayo Smith Society:

* 2008: Miguel Cabrera
* 2007: Magglio Ordonez
* 2006: Kenny Rogers
* 2005: Placido Polanco
* 2004: Carlos Guillen, Ivan Rodriguez (tie)
