Phillies move high-ERA pitcher to minor league

PHILADELPHIA -- Struggling right-hander Adam Eaton has accepted an assignment to the Phillies' minor league system, the team announced today. The Phillies haven't decided at which level Eaton will begin his assignment.

Eaton, who signed a three-year, $24.5 million contract before last season, was 4-8 with a 5.80 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) for the Phillies. He was moved to the bullpen 10 days ago after the Phillies traded for Joe Blanton, and he has made only two relief appearances. In his most recent outing, Sunday against the Braves, he allowed three runs in the fourth inning against the Braves.

Last season, Eaton posted a 6.29 ERA that was among the worst in baseball.

The Phillies will announce a corresponding roster move before Tuesday night's game in Washington, but it's likely they will recall left-hander J.A. Happ from Class AAA Lehigh Valley. Happ was lifted from a start Sunday after throwing only 41 pitches in 2-2/3 innings. Happ would likely be used as a situational lefty out of the bullpen.

I guess $24.5 million doesn't buy what it used to.
