Tigers' series in KC could be key
Detroit (50-49) at Kansas City (45-55), Tuesday, 8:10 p.m. ET

KANSAS CITY -- Tigers manager Jim Leyland stresses that every game has mattered since Opening Day. No one series matters more than another.

But for a team playing as well as Detroit, this week could carry a little extra importance. If the Tigers want to make the playoffs, the rest of this series against the Royals and the three games this weekend against the White Sox could carry large consequences.

Detroit certainly would benefit if it did well against Chicago. The White Sox lead the American League Central, with the Twins right behind them.

Given the Tigers' troubles against the Royals earlier this season, this series in Kansas City must be considered a big one. Detroit lost all six games against Kansas City before starting this series with a win on Monday.

Still, this stretch is no different from any other one, in the opinion of the Tigers manager.

"We're going to be playing 162 games for sure," Leyland said, "and hopefully we're going to play them the way you're supposed to play. I'm not going to get all that stuff about it's this time and that."

Pitching matchup

DET: LHP Kenny Rogers (7-6, 4.62 ERA)
Rogers started off the season's second half with a display in damage control, allowing 11 hits over six innings but limiting the Orioles to four runs. That allowed the Tigers to pull ahead in the late innings for a comeback victory, improving his career record to 6-7 when he gives up 11 or more hits in a game. However, Rogers owns two losses in as many meetings with the Royals this season, allowing nine runs over 10 innings in the process.

KC: RHP Kyle Davies (3-1, 4.59 ERA)
Davies has been without a victory since June 17, when he got through his fourth start with a 3-0 mark. He's made five starts since then with one loss and four no-decisions. His last outing, on July 13 against the Mariners, resulted in seven innings with three runs on six hits. Davies is making good progress in avoiding his big bugaboo -- walks. He's had just four in his last three starts and 16 2/3 innings. Davies faced the Tigers twice last season, going 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA.

Tidbits

Magglio Ordonez sat out on Monday for what Leyland called a regular day off. Leyland said Ordonez would start on Tuesday. ... In his first game since July 13, Carlos Guillen scored a career-high five runs on Monday. Guillen had taken time off to be with his wife, who was in the hospital. ... The only player who didn't reach base for Detroit on Monday was Marcus Thames. ... After his three-run home run on Monday, Gary Sheffield is just one RBI away from reaching the 1,600 mark for his career.
