Yeah, that is spelled wrong. It should be form aldehyde. The way to remember is to just think about it for a second: A formaldehyde is an aldehyde so obviously the word must end in aldehyde and not eldehyde. Formaldehyde is the simplest of the aldehydes. you just have a central carbon with a double bond to an oxygen. The carbon is also bounded to 2 hydrogens. If you're worried about spelling, call is by its CORRECT name: methanal. That's more correct that formaldehyde (although must less commonly used) and easier to spell. IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature is always a safe bet. Other names that would work: formalin, formol, methyl aldehyde, and methylene oxide. | |
