DETROIT -- With the rain pouring down on Comerica Park Tuesday afternoon, a kitten took shelter among the wiring above the entrance way to the Tigers batting cage.

Tigers outfielder Matt Joyce, hearing the tiny black cat whimper, climbed up on a stool and, with batting gloves on to protect his hands, pulled the animal down, before carrying it up the stairs into the clubhouse.

The kitten was last seen being fed milk in a bowl by Joyce in the Tigers clubhouse kitchen.

Tonight's starting pitcher, Justin Verlander, was less compassionate moments earlier.

"I can't even get near that thing. I'll get all messed up," Verlander said, scooting by the scene. "I'm so allergic to cats."

I don't blame Justin, we did not need him all messed up, allergy wise, before pitching!

No blame....just glad somebody stepped in and did the right thing...

That's a cool story I guess. Cats are cool, every one we own was a stray.

Allergic to cats?! I'm allergic to animals or spring or something but that wouldn't stop me. Just eat spicy food when your allergies kick in...problem solved.

My husband got over his cat allergies...just by exposure!

It's not like I'm about to go out and kill every single cat that I see. But at the same time I won't go out of my way to save a cat.

My one cat beat the crap (literally) out of my other cat today (in the house I might add) and I'm not liking them at the moment either. Very sweet story though

Well with those cats we have 3 (Tigger, Spot, and Layla) that come in the house and what not. There's a few more (J.R., Jaws, and I think one more) that live on our porch but don't come in. We got them fixed and feed them but they don't come inside and won't come inside. J.R. is friendly but the others aren't. Jaws is kind of funny. Their dish is always empty and whenever you try and go outside and the dish is empty it bites your heels and won't let you out the door until you get it some food. When it sees food it goes nuts and really attacks you and won't let you pour the food in its dish.

Sounds like you need to study animal psychology! Jaws is psyco cat!
