Tigers send Hollimon to Toledo, expecting Santiago

As expected, the Tigers have sent infielder Michael Hollimon to Triple-A Toledo in order to make room for the expected return of Ramon Santiago on Tuesday night, the team announced this morning.

Santiago has spent a little more than one month on the disabled list after separating his left shoulder in early June. Santiago is known for his defensive ability at shortstop, and his playing time there could increase if veteran Edgar Renteria continues his hitting slump.

Santiago, however, is a lifetime .237 hitter in the major leagues, so it’s unclear how much of an offensive upgrade he would be. Santiago batted .083 (2-for-24) during seven games of his rehabilitation assignment at Toledo.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland has praised Hollimon in recent days, saying how impressive the rookie has been during his month in the majors. Hollimon batted .261 with one home run and two RBIs in 11 games.
