Tigers place Brandon Inge on DL with pulled oblique

The Tigers have placed utility man Brandon Inge on the disabled list, retroactive to June 23, with a pulled oblique muscle.

To take Inge's spot on the roster, the Tigers have called up catcher Dane Sardinha from Triple-A Toledo. Sardinha will wear No. 57.

Inge was scheduled to start tonight at catcher. He missed much of last week as the pulled muscle bothered him, but pinch-hit and played third base on Sunday in San Diego. He was injured during the team's recent trip to Seattle at the end of May. Inge had a cortisone shot in the injured area back on June 15.

The Tigers need to get a real catcher pretty soon now.

He may not even need a rehab start. It's retroactive to June 23, so he could be back as soon as July 8th.

DETROIT -- Just when the Tigers were whittling down the players from their disabled list, they added another injury. Detroit placed Brandon Inge, who had been alternating starts at catcher, on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a pulled left oblique muscle.

The move is retroactive to Monday, the day after Inge entered Sunday's series finale at San Diego as a defensive replacement at third base. He started at catcher a day earlier. The injury, however, dates back to the beginning of June. Ingle pulled his oblique on a checked swing June 1 at Seattle and has been battling the injury since. He missed the entire series at San Francisco before getting back behind the plate Saturday.

The plan from there was for Inge to resume starting at least part of the time, along with Ivan Rodriguez. In fact, he was expected to catch on Wednesday. That platoon is now likely on hold for the next couple weeks, giving Rodriguez more regular time again.

Replacing the versatile Inge will be a challenge involving more than one player. At the basic level, the Tigers needed a backup catcher with Inge out, so they purchased the contract of Dane Sardinha from Triple-A Toledo to take Inge's spot on the 25-man roster. Sardinha entered Wednesday batting .206 in 48 games for the Mud Hens, with eight doubles, six home runs and 16 RBIs.

In terms of Inge's utility role, much of that task will most likely fall to Ryan Raburn, who can play third and second base as well as any of the three outfield spots. He also has been the emergency catcher.
