June 30, 2008 Happy Mid-Year Everyone!!! 🐅

--C Dane Sardinha, hitless in his only other 11 major league at-bats, tripled with runners at the corners and two outs in the sixth inning Sunday to drive in the tying and winning runs. Sardinha laced a 1-0 fastball into the gap in left center and both runners scored without a play. Sardinha also threw out CF Willy Taveras of Colorado trying to steal, the second time in the series the National League's leading base-stealer had been thrown out running. "I'm just going to go back in the clubhouse and keep quiet," Sardinha said. His previous at-bat Sardinha had bounced into a double play with runners on first and third and one out.

--RHP Todd Jones bounced back from his first blown save of the season the night before to record his 15th save of the year Sunday. Jones wasn't pounded but he gave up four runs and three two-out hits Saturday, only avoiding a loss when Detroit rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win. Sunday he came in to open the ninth and retired three straight batters on a mixture of fastballs and curves low in the strike zone.
--LHP Kenny Rogers made a nice adjustment after the third inning Sunday and recovered to win his sixth game in 11 decisions. "He bent but never broke," Manager Jim Leyland said. "It looked like they were sitting on soft stuff early but he started to pound some balls inside, then he went back outside to get some outs." Rogers also participated in a 3-6-1 double play and caught a bullet line drive for an out. "I don't know another pitcher in baseball that could have caught that line drive by (Matt) Holliday," Leyland said.

--RF Clete Thomas collected two more hits to left field Sunday and made an excellent slide to score a run in Detroit's 4-3 victory over Colorado. The left-handed hitting Thomas does an excellent job of going the other way on pitches from the middle out and is hitting .333 as a part-time player. Thomas singled in the first and scored from second on a hit to left field, making a nice inside slide to avoid a tag try at the plate. His playing time figures to go way up with the loss of RF Magglio Ordonez to an injury for two weeks, with OF Matt Joyce also probable to get some playing time. Joyce is a left-handed hitter, too.

--RF Magglio Ordonez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a pulled right oblique and lat muscle suffered in the first inning Saturday night. He told reporters the pain increased overnight. Ordonez, batting .307 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs, had not missed a game this season. "I don't want to take a chance," said Ordonez, third Tiger this month to go on the DL due to an oblique muscle pull. "You know when it is not going to be OK, and it is going to be a miracle if you feel better. "Sheff (Gary Sheffield) told me, 'You've got to take care of it.'"

--OF Matt Joyce was recalled from Class AAA Toledo on Sunday to replace injured RF Magglio Ordonez on the Detroit roster. The left-handed hitting Joyce, who last week had seven RBIs in a game for the Mud Hens, is making his second tour of duty with the Tigers this season. He played 18 games in May, batting .200 with five home runs and 10 RBI. He will probably get some starts for Ordonez but likely will play behind OF Clete Thomas.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi retired all six batters he faced, three on strikeouts Sunday, as he continues to come through in pressure situations for Detroit. "He impressed me a lot when he went through that one part of the order like he did," manager Jim Leyland said of his rookie.

--IF Ramon Santiago will begin a rehab assignment Monday with Class AAA Toledo with an eye toward returning to Detroit later in the week. Santiago has been out since early June with a left shoulder separation.

--LHP Dontrelle Willis was scheduled to pitch two relief innings Sunday night in a rehab appearance for high Class A Lakeland of the Florida State League. Willis had not pitched in a game since he was sent to Lakeland nearly three weeks ago in an effort to regain his ability to throw strikes. The Tigers are trying to smooth out his mechanics, lessen his movement, to help him gets his confidence back.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Pitchers since 2000 to allow at least 11 hits in a game without allowing an earned run after LHP Nate Robertson worked 6 1/3 innings June 26 and gave St. Louis just an unearned run in Detroit's 3-2, 10-inning victory.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Five-hundred (.500) is not a magic number. It's not what we are shooting for. But you've got to get back to that (.500) before you can do anything else." -- Tigers' manager Jim Leyland, after Detroit reached 40-40 on Saturday night thanks to a 16-4 run.

July 1, 2008

--RHP Armando Galarraga will be glad when he doesn't have to face Minnesota again. Galarraga was roughed up for nine hits and four runs (three earned) in six innings Monday night as he was streaky in the strike zone, sometimes failing to locate it for a batter or three. Galarraga owns a 7-0 record with a 2.95 ERA against every team not named Minnesota, but against the Twins, he is 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in three starts.

--1B Miguel Cabrera left the game in the third inning with a left hip flexor strain. Cabrera may have strained the muscle trying to get a throw that clanked off the heel of his glove in the second for an error. He was listed as day-to-day, but manager Jim Leyland is typically cautious with leg injuries and may not try to get Cabrera back until Wednesday afternoon.
--OF/1B Marcus Thames hit his 15th home run of the season his first time up Monday night. He opened as Detroit's left fielder but moved to first base when 1B Miguel Cabrera left the game with an injury. He'll play again Tuesday, but just where is uncertain. Thames cranked a fastball that leaked back over the heart of the plate but struck out on high fastballs his next two times up as he was challenged to hit the hard stuff all night. A two-strike curveball got him in the seventh with two outs and runners at first and third. The fact he had to come in cold to play first cost the Tigers a run in the fifth when he couldn't get a ground ball out of his glove to throw to first in time; it became an RBI single.

--OF Clete Thomas pinch-hit for 1B Miguel Cabrera, who was removed from Monday's game after two innings, in the third and remained in the game to play left field. Thomas didn't start because Minnesota had a left-hander going, but he doubled his first time up. He'll probably be in the outfield Tuesday and Wednesday. Thomas hasn't played a lot in relative terms but has already made three errors, including one Monday that permitted a Twins run to score.

--CF Curtis Granderson got two hits off Minnesota LHP Glen Perkins as his confidence and ability to adjust continues with regular play against lefties. Granderson has done a better job of staying back and lining the ball up the middle or to left against southpaws. Batting ninth, he came up against a right-hander in the eighth and singled in the go-ahead run on the first pitch for his third hit of the game.

--OF Matt Joyce, brought up to replace disabled RF Magglio Ordonez on the roster, showed he'd worked on things he'd been told to work on when sent back to the minors earlier this season. Joyce pinch-hit for UT Ryan Raburn in the eighth inning and laid off two high breaking balls to work the count to 3-2. Raburn, told to work on his approach against breaking balls and changeups, fouled off one fastball and laced the second into the right-field corner for an RBI triple that tied the score at 4-4. He then scored on a single by CF Curtis Granderson. Joyce could play if 1B Miguel Cabrera sits out Tuesday's game.

--LHP Casey Fossum, brought in to face the left-handed-hitting heart of the Minnesota lineup, gave up a leadoff single in the seventh but then got a double play and two more outs to solidify his position as a left-handed situational pitcher for Detroit. Fossum was removed as soon as a right-handed hitter came up as the second batter of the eighth inning but wound up being the winning pitcher.

--RHP Joel Zumaya earned his first save since last season, getting the last five outs of Detroit's 5-4 victory at Minnesota. Zumaya showed off his good curve to the first batter he faced in the eighth inning then switched almost exclusively to his fastball the rest of the way. He struggled, needing a line-out double play to end the eighth. After the Twins got two straight singles with one out in the ninth, he recorded a flyout to center and a forceout at second to record the third save of his career. The Tigers wanted to break Zumaya in as their closer this season, but his shoulder injury prompted them to re-sign RHP Todd Jones and limit his closing chances this season. Jones had pitched two straight games prior to Monday.

--RHP Jeremy Bonderman underwent successful surgery Monday to correct his thoracic outlet compression syndrome, which involved removal of his first right-side rib and a venous bypass. His season ends with a 3-4 record and 4.29 ERA in 12 starts. The surgery was performed by Dr. Greg Pearl in Dallas, who operated on LHP Kenny Rogers for a similar problem in 2001 and last season for a blood clot in his left shoulder. Thoracic outlet syndrome stems from a pinching of the vein responsible for returning blood from the arm to the heart.

July 3, 2008

--RHP Eddie Bonine didn't have the pinpoint control he needs to survive and prosper so the Minnesota Twins pounded him for five runs in the third inning (three unearned) in the shortest start of his brief major league career. Bonine didn't make it through the third and gave up seven hits. Too many of his pitches were up in the strike zone, not enough were inside and his breaking pitches were flat too often.

--RHP Zach Miner, who walked four batters in two innings Tuesday night, was optioned to Class AAA Toledo on Wednesday. He allowed 12 base-runners in his last three games, although he had a 4.23 ERA in 32 games overall for Detroit. Manager Jim Leyland has noted recently the Tigers bullpen is allowing too many walks.
--RHP Aquilino Lopez was recalled from Class AAA Toledo to replace the optioned RHP Zach Miner on the roster. Lopez, 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 23 games for the Tigers, was sent down June 15 to be a starter in case Detroit needed another rotation member at some point. He will work long relief for Detroit.

--1B Miguel Cabrera was not in Detroit's starting lineup although he was available to pinch hit. Manager Jim Leyland said he expected Cabrera to be able to start Thursday in Seattle. "I'm going to give him another day," Leyland said before Wednesday's game. "If the ideal situation came up, I would pinch hit him again. But I expect him to play (Thursday) in Seattle." Cabrera did not start Tuesday but he did pinch hit, lining out to right. He was sidelined Monday with a sore left hip flexor and was limping noticeably as he went to bat Tuesday.

--C Ivan Rodriguez got a day off under his manager's policy of more rest making him a more productive player. C Dane Sardinha caught. Rodriguez will return Thursday night in Seattle.

--RHP Fernando Rodney turned in his fourth straight scoreless appearance, pitching the eighth inning at Minnesota. Rodney is starting to command his fastball better, essential in making his superlative changeup a weapon.

--LHP Casey Fossum turned in 4 1/3 innings of long relief to give Detroit's bullpen a break. Fossum allowed runs in the fifth and sixth inning but his chief contribution was giving the Tigers a chance to get back in the game, which they weren't able to take advantage of.

From the FSN Daily Wire - Page 2 Flagbo10

Happy 4th everyone!

--RHP Justin Verlander struggled with his control early but retired eight of the last 10 batters he faced to depart with a 6-2 lead. Verlander had trouble with his command early and was fortunate to escape the first inning with just one run allowed. He also gave up a run in the third but was getting in a groove by then, although his pitch count reached 109 by the end of the sixth. He has thrown more than 100 pitches in all but two of his starts this season.

--1B Miguel Cabrera was back on the field, though he was hobbling. Cabrera had missed two starts and most of three games because of a strained left hip flexor but was deemed well enough to start the first game against the Mariners. The cleanup hitter, Cabrera visibly limped to first when he singled during a three-run fifth inning.
--SS Edgar Renteria was not in the starting lineup. Manager Jim Leyland wanted to rest Renteria one game and preferred having INF Michael Hollimon hitting against a right-handed starter Thursday instead of a southpaw on Friday. Renteria returns Friday.

--C Ivan Rodriguez will get at least one day of rest in Seattle, possibly two. It might depend upon how well the Tigers fare against the Mariners. He got a pair of key hits for the Tigers, lining a single up the middle for an RBI that tied the score at 2-2 in the fourth and then putting the capper on the game with a two-run single down the first-base line in the top of the ninth.

--RF Matt Joyce sprayed the ball around the field to collect his first career four-hit game. Joyce pulled the ball to right, slapped a double to the left-field corner and singled up the middle as he seemed to put into practice the things he was asked to work on when he was sent to the minors earlier. Joyce showed the ability to hit a fastball in his first stint, but breaking balls and changeups gave him problems. One of his hits Thursday came when he creamed the second of two straight changeups he saw.

--3B Carlos Guillen is scheduled to get a day off this weekend. Guillen was supposed to catch a break against Minnesota but it didn't work out as manager Jim Leyland elected to keep him on the field while the Tigers were losing the last two games of the series. UT Ryan Raburn likely would start for Guillen when he gets a day off.

--INF Michael Hollimon got perhaps his last start with the Tigers for a while. Hollimon made it memorable with his first major league home run, a shot into the seats in right center in the sixth inning, after singling earlier. When IF Ramon Santiago returns from his rehab stint, either this weekend or early next week, Hollimon will probably be returned to the minors.

--LF Marcus Thames got a day off as manager Jim Leyland opted for rookies OF Clete Thomas and OF Matt Joyce flanking CF Curtis Granderson. Thames is expected to return to the field Friday when Seattle throws a left-hander.

--RHP Joel Zumaya pitched a scoreless eighth and used the opportunity to work on his curve. Zumaya mixed up his pitches more than he has been recently as he protected a 6-2 lead. His fastball was at 99 mph, but he got his only strikeout on a soft breaking ball with nice bite to it. Zumaya gave up two hits in the inning.

--RHP Todd Jones was able to get only two outs in the ninth before manager Jim Leyland relieved him after Seattle scored two runs. Jones had thrown 23 pitches and Leyland may have been influenced just as much by that as by the two runs he allowed. Leyland wanted to have his closer available for Friday.

--RHP Fernando Rodney threw one pitch to finish the game and earn his first save.

July 7, 2008

--LHP Nate Robertson changed his pitching pattern a little Sunday after giving up 11 hits in each of his previous two starts. Robertson usually likes to work right-handed hitters off inside baseballs but Sunday went to curves and sliders away in case he was becoming too predictable. He allowed just two hits until Raul Ibanez doubled with one out in the seventh to break a string of 11 batters retired in a row. Eighteen of the first 23 batters he faced required three pitches or less to finish their at-bat.
--RHP Joel Zumaya overpowered Seattle on Sunday with blazing fastballs. Zumaya worked two innings. His first pitch was clocked at 100 mph and he was regularly at 99 and 100 for both innings. He tried a couple of curves without success, but they weren't necessary.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi followed RHP Joel Zumaya and also pitched two scoreless innings. He, too, relied mostly on his fastball. Dolsi was in the mid-90s after Zumaya hit triple digits but it didn't seem to matter. His breaking ball was better than Zumaya's.

--UT Ryan Raburn started in right field Sunday to give Detroit an extra right-handed bat against Seattle's southpaw starter, a move that paid off in a solo home run in the fifth inning. Raburn also walked once before being replaced when the Mariners went to a right-handed reliever.

--C Ivan Rodriguez returned to the starting lineup Sunday and tried to launch a new hitting streak. His previous streak ended at nine games Saturday night when he pinch-hit and flied out. He singled his first three times up Sunday and later added a fourth single. His hits went to all parts of the field, which Rodriguez does when he's locked in at the plate.

--3B Carlos Guillen was in Detroit's starting lineup Sunday -- as an All-Star. Guillen was the Tigers' lone representative to the AL All-Star unit.

--DH Gary Sheffield sat out Sunday's game, with normal LF Marcus Thames replacing him at the DH spot in the batting order. Sheffield, 0-for-6 in his last two games, was just getting a day off after playing most of the week. Thames went hitless but hit the game-deciding sacrifice fly in the 15th inning.

--UT Brandon Inge will begin a rehab assignment Monday with the Toledo Mud Hens but won't return to active duty with Detroit until after the All-Star break. Inge is eligible to come off the disabled list Tuesday but won't play for Detroit until July 17 in Baltimore. "I expect him back after the (All-Star) break if I were predicting anything," manager Jim Leyland said. "I had a pain-free day," Inge said of his weekend batting practice sessions since going on the DL with a pulled left oblique muscle. "I didn't feel a thing. I didn't feel one catch. Hitting, I pretty well maxed out, and throwing I pretty well maxed out. Now, I've just got to get to a game situation."

--RHP Justin Verlander will switch places with rookie RHP Eddie Bonine so he can make two starts prior to the All-Star break. Manager Jim Leyland confirmed Verlander will start Tuesday, after Detroit's day off, on his normal rest with Bonine moving back one day to Wednesday. That will allow Verlander to make the last start before the All-Star break.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Detroit players on the disabled list in June due to pulled oblique muscles. DH Gary Sheffield was the first to go down while UT Brandon Inge and RF Magglio Ordonez were both sidelined the last full week of the month.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Me starting again? I don't think so." -- RHP Joel Zumaya, responding to a statement from his manager he might return to being a starter, which he did in the minors to pile up innings, at some point in the future rather than being the Tigers' closer-in-waiting.

July 8, 2008...sorry it's late but we were at the GAME, perfectly wonderful...Justin kicked patootie and the rain let up just in time!

3B Carlos Guillen will be taking his four gloves with him to the All-Star Game -- even though they're not his. Guillen is one of those players who forever is using someone else's equipment, in part because he hates breaking in new gloves of his own. So the three-time Detroit All-Star will be taking teammate Miguel Cabrera's third-base glove to Yankee Stadium, Miguel Tejada's shortstop glove, Sean Casey's first-base mitt and Gary Sheffield's outfield glove. On Sunday, Guillen said he was thinking of possibly getting bats from Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez to use. "Everybody," Guillen said. "They're all good hitters."

--IF Ramon Santiago will be recalled from his rehab duty prior to Tuesday's game and rejoin the Tigers in Detroit for their series against the Cleveland Indians. Santiago batted .083 for seven rehab games with Toledo, getting two hits in 24 at-bats. Santiago has been out since June 5 because of a separated left shoulder.
--IF Michael Hollimon was optioned back to Class AAA Toledo (Ohio) following Sunday's game at Seattle to make room for the return of IF Ramon Santiago on the roster Tuesday. Hollimon was 6-for-23 in 11 games with Detroit, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. "Hollimon needs some work, defensively," manager Jim Leyland said. "He's a little crude. But he's got a little juice in his bat, and I like him. He's definitely a prospect."

--RF Magglio Ordonez, on the disabled list since the end of June with a pulled right oblique, has told Tigers trainer Kevin Rand he's making progress in his recovery. "Evidently, he's feeling pretty good," said manager Jim Leyland, hopeful he'll get his cleanup hitter back right after the All-Star break.

--LHP Dontrelle Willis is scheduled to return to Detroit this week for further examination of his previously hyperextended right knee. Willis was optioned to the minors, with his consent, in early June but has pitched for the Tigers' Class A Lakeland (Fla.) farm club just once, and that was more than a week ago. Willis landed badly on his right leg making a pitch in his second start of the season and went on the disabled list. He pitched just once for Detroit after returning and was so wild that Detroit asked him to go to the minors to see if he could regain his control. He was a little wild in his minor league appearance (three walks in two innings) but wild around the strike zone. Team orthopedist Dr. Stephen Lemos is scheduled to re-examine the knee when Willis gets back to Detroit. He is 0-1 with a 10.32 ERA in the big leagues this season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Detroit players on the disabled list in June due to pulled oblique muscles. DH Gary Sheffield was the first to go down while UT Brandon Inge and RF Magglio Ordonez were both sidelined the last full week of the month.

--RHP Justin Verlander made an adjustment after giving up a two-run home run with two outs in the first inning Tuesday night and wound up retiring the last 14 batters he faced to run his winning streak to four games. Verlander gave up a double and a home run, both on high changeups, after two were out in the first, but then went more to his fastball. He struck out seven and now has fanned 36 in his last six starts. Verlander threw 99 pitches, only his third start of the season under 100.

--2B Placido Polanco will become a citizen of the United States on Wednesday in ceremonies to be held inside Comerica Park. U.S. District Court Judge Gerald E. Rosen will swear in 100 new American citizens, among them the Tigers second baseman. The native of the Dominican Republic went to school at Miami-Dade Community College and splits time between homes in Miami and his native land. "I've lived half of my life here," said Polanco, 32. "It's been 16 years. Went to school here. Work here. My kids were born here. They're all citizens."
--1B Miguel Cabrera is hurting in the body -- but not at the plate. Cabrera, still painfully bothered by his left hip flexor, banged out four hits Tuesday night including home runs to left and right fields. His two-run home run in the third capped a four-run inning and went over the left field fence while his solo shot in the seventh was over the right field wall.

--3B Carlos Guillen missed Tuesday night's game with Cleveland to be with his wife and new daughter, born Monday. He is expected back in the Detroit lineup Wednesday night.

--CF Gary Sheffield batted fifth Tuesday night in the absence of 3B Carlos Guillen. Sheffield had been hitting sixth since RF Magglio Ordonez went on the disabled list but with Guillen missing Tuesday night he was moved up to protect 1B Miguel Cabrera. Sheffield went hitless.

--UT Ryan Raburn was in the starting lineup Tuesday night, batting ninth, as the replacement for absent 3B Carlos Guillen. He started Detroit's four-run third inning with a sharp double to left and later added a single. He made one error, bobbling a grounder in the eighth.

--LF Marcus Thames ended his small slump in dramatic fashion Tuesday night. Thames was 0-for-16 after his first at-bat but then cranked an RBI double off the top of the left field wall in the third inning to tie the score at 2-2. He came up in the fifth and one-handed a two-run home run over the fence in right, taking the outside pitch away for only his second home run to right of the 17 he has hit.

--CF Curtis Granderson remains drastically improved against left-handed pitchers this year. Granderson entered the game Tuesday night hitting .293 against southpaws, and manager Jim Leyland has let him remain in the leadoff spot against all pitching after hitting him ninth a lot earlier. Granderson pulled two singles to right off Cleveland's southpaw starter, the first driving in a run.

--LHP Dontrelle Willis underwent an MRI Monday afternoon at the Detroit Medical Center, and the test disclosed the pitcher has patella tendinitis in his right knee. Willis was given a cortisone injection to reduce inflammation and fitted for a brace to provide additional support. He will return to Lakeland, Fla., later this week to resume his training program. The 26-year-old, who signed a three-year, $29 million extension after being traded to Detroit during the winter, has pitched just once since agreeing to go to the minors to work on regaining his control. Willis is 0-1 with a 10.32 ERA in the big leagues this season.

--C Ivan Rodriguez will get a day off Wednesday, with C Dane Sardinha replacing him. "He's tired," manager Jim Leyland said. "I was worried about him. Long flight (from Seattle), day off ... I was glad he got that home run." Rodriguez homered in the seventh inning Tuesday.

July 10, 2008

--RHP Eddie Bonine has faced two American League teams since coming up to Detroit, and both of them have roughed him up. Bonine, drubbed by Minnesota in his previous start, gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings to Cleveland on Wednesday night including three in the first inning. He was optioned to Class AA Erie following the game, and his return is uncertain. Bonine got ahead of the early hitters he faced in the opening inning but wound up going to three balls on five of them, including four full counts. He was missing the strike zone by more than he can afford to when he was nibbling and the pitches he got up in the zone were hit. Bonine doesn't have a true "out" pitch he can go to in the clutch.

--1B Jeff Larish was recalled from Class AAA Toledo following Wednesday night's game and will likely remain with the club past the All-Star break. Larish hit .200 in 15 games with Detroit earlier this season but showed an ability to pinch-hit successfully. Manager Jim Leyland said he might play Larish at DH or he might play him at first with 1B Miguel Cabrera, giving DH Gary Sheffield a break. A decision on who gets sent to the minors when the Tigers decide on a fifth starter won't be made until after the break.
--C Ivan Rodriguez got the night off Wednesday so he could be well rested to catch Thursday afternoon against Minnesota.

--C Dane Sardinha played in place of C Ivan Rodriguez on Wednesday night, and he started Detroit's five-run seventh-inning rally with a single to left. Sardinha also came up with runners on first and third and one out and struck out. Detroit designated Sardinha for assignment, effective Thursday, after the game. "He got a big hit," manager Jim Leyland said. "I love Sardinha, I really like him. I actually hope he gets claimed, because that means he's going to be in the big leagues. I'd like to have him on the team. I hope it works out for him, but if it doesn't, I hope he decides to stay with us."

--SS Edgar Renteria suffered a mild left hamstring strain trying to beat out a double-play grounder to short in the seventh inning Wednesday night. He hit the top of the bag and was barely out, pulling up lame after crossing the bag. He was replaced in the top of the eighth by 2B Placido Polanco, with starting IF Ramon Santiago shifting from second to short. Renteria looked much better at the plate prior to getting hurt, including a single to center in the sixth for his first RBI since June 16 in San Francisco. The Tigers tweaked his stance a little, adjusting his feet a little.

--3B Carlos Guillen got a key two-run double in Detroit's five-run seventh inning Wednesday night, but it was his fielding that drew raves. Cleveland had a runner at third with one out in the top of the ninth and RHP Todd Jones on the mound. The infield was drawn in with the score at 6-6, and Guillen fielded a bullet on his knees and made a flip from there to the plate to get Casey Blake in a rundown, which he ended by tagging him out. On the next play, he snared a ball headed into left field to his left and got the runner at first to end the inning.

--LHP Casey Fossum performed the unsung job of keeping Cleveland within reach Wednesday night. Fossum allowed one run in 3 1/3 innings of relief after RHP Eddie Bonine was taken out after allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings. "He won't get much credit but I thought he did a great job," manager Jim Leyland said.

--LF Marcus Thames was not in Wednesday night's starting lineup. He pinch-hit for his replacement, OF Clete Thomas, and lined a single to left to start the bottom of the ninth, scoring the winning run on 1B Miguel Cabrera's home run.

--RF Magglio Ordonez has begun lifting weights and riding an exercise bike in his way back from a pulled left oblique muscle. Ordonez says he'll be able to return right after the All-Star break. He plans to start swinging a bat late in the week.

--UT Brandon Inge was recalled from his injury rehab assignment and will report to Detroit for Thursday afternoon's game with Minnesota. Inge caught roughly half a game both Tuesday and Wednesday and reported that he felt fine.

--1B Miguel Cabrera feasted on fastballs Tuesday night, so on Wednesday, he saw a steady diet of breaking balls and changeups. Until the ninth inning. A first-pitch breaking ball missed, so Cabrera got a 1-0 fastball and lined it over the left field wall for a walk-off, two-run home run. He also had a single.

--RHP Ryan Perry of Arizona, Detroit's first-round draft choice last month, has agreed to a $1.48 million signing bonus and will report this week to the Tigers' Lakeland farm club in the Florida State League, according to a report on the Tucson (Ariz.) Citizen Web site.

"They basically have said they would like me to be in the big leagues by the end of the summer once the rosters are expanded (Sept. 1)," Perry said told the newspaper. "I hope to get that nice little phone call."

Perry, selected 21st overall, agreed to a bonus between those given to the players selected 19th and 22nd in the draft. He was the second reliever drafted, and the first, RHP Andrew Cashner, agreed to a $1.54 million bonus with the Chicago Cubs as the 19th pick. The 22nd selection, SS Reese Havens of the New York Mets, has agreed to terms for $1,419,000.

--2B Placido Polanco, who did not start Wednesday night, was among 100 people sworn in as United States citizens in ceremonies held at Comerica Park before Detroit's game against Cleveland. The oath was to be administered by United States District Court Judge Gerald E. Rosen. "I'm very excited," said Polanco, a native of the Dominican Republic. "I've lived half of my life here, 16 years. I went to school here (Miami-Dade Community College). My kids were born here. It means a lot, because I've been here for what, four years, and now the Tigers feel like part of my family. I feel like I've been here forever, and this is the organization that has given me the chance to play every day finally. To become a citizen here, it's a very important thing for me to do this in front of all these fans that I really appreciate." He did wind up playing the ninth when SS Edgar Renteria suffered a slight left hamstring strain and had to leave the game.

--IF Ramon Santiago started at second base in place of 2B Placido Polanco. Santiago, who singled his first time up, was making his first appearance with Detroit since separating his left shoulder June 4. He shifted to shortstop in the ninth when SS Edgar Renteria suffered a leg muscle pull.

--RF Matt Joyce hit his second home run in two games, but his muff of a bouncing single to right with a man on and nobody out in the ninth set Minnesota up to tie the score and send the game into extra innings, where the Twins won it. The rookie also had a single.

--1B Jeff Larish started in the field for the first time in his brief major league career and had three hits. He also made a standout defensive play. Larish had a double and two singles, going the other way with surprising skill for a power hitter. His RBI single in the third gave him a .368 batting average with runners on compared with just .048 with no one on. He made a good throw to the plate to nail Nick Punto trying to score in the fifth on a sharp grounder to first.
--DH Miguel Cabrera was slotted as Detroit's designated hitter in place of Gary Sheffield. Cabrera went hitless but still had some good at-bats, including a late walk. He had three home runs in his two previous games.

--LHP Kenny Rogers gave up two first-inning runs but worked in and out of trouble thereafter in his seven-inning stint. Rogers wound up allowing three runs and nine hits. His control was good after the first.

--SS Edgar Renteria was held out of the lineup to rest the left hamstring he strained trying to beat out a double-play grounder the night before. Manager Jim Leyland said Renteria might play Friday.

--INF Ramon Santiago played shortstop in place of injured Edgar Renteria. He contributed a two-run double to left-center in Detroit's five-run fourth inning. He didn't hit well in his rehab assignment but has hit in both of the games in which he's played for the Tigers since returning this week.

--UT Brandon Inge returned to the Detroit roster. He didn't play but is expected to catch either Friday night or Saturday to give C Ivan Rodriguez a chance to rest up.

--LF Marcus Thames returned to Detroit's starting lineup after being held to pinch-hitting duty the night before. Thames singled his first three times up.

--RHP Todd Jones was victimized by an error in blowing a save for only the second time this season. Jones, however, didn't help himself by giving up singles to the first two batters he faced, the second of which was misplayed into an error by rookie RF Matt Joyce that let in one run and put the tying run on third base. Jones gave up a sacrifice fly, tying the score.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi got the final out of the ninth inning with two runners on base in a tie game but served up a fastball that was too good to 1B Justin Morneau, who hit it for a game-deciding home run in the 11th. Dolsi has earned his manager's trust for late-inning situations despite his inexperience and will continue to be called on in pressure situations.

--RHP Fernando Rodney continues to be shaky in late-game situations. Rodney is still having trouble spotting his fastball, and it again cost him a run, a critical score that let Minnesota shave a 6-3 deficit to 6-4 entering the ninth.

July 14, 2008

--RHP Justin Verlander came up as the ace many feel he's capable of being Sunday with seven innings of four-hit ball to stop Detroit's three-game losing streak against Minnesota. "My intention was to go out there and get us a win going into the break, and I was able to do that. That was big." Verlander is 5-0 in seven starts, allowing two or less earned runs in each of them. His fastball was in the mid-to-upper 90s and his curve was a snapper. The Twins scored two runs in the fourth, when Verlander threw as many pitches (37) as he did in the previous three. He came out having thrown 108 pitches with eight strikeouts.

--RF Matt Joyce is making a strong bid for playing time with a powerful hitting display over his last five games. Joyce cracked a home run over Comerica Park's 420-food distant center field fence in the eighth inning Sunday to give Detroit some breathing room. Joyce has nine home runs this season in less than 100 at-bats. Four of his home runs have come in the last five games along with six RBIs in a 9-for-21 stretch. Eleven of his last 14 hits have been for extra bases.
--RHP Joel Zumaya turned in his second scoreless inning in as many days Sunday with a hitless (but two walks) eighth inning. Zumaya hit 99 mph on his last pitch after regularly gunning 100 Saturday afternoon. The Tigers want him to be able to work 2-3 games in a row. He's begun mixing in his curve successfully as well as his heater.

--RHP Todd Jones worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 17th save, doing a nice job of mixing his pitches and having good location of his now-ordinary fastball. Jones used his cutter and his curve. Manager Jim Leyland says he's going to monitor Jones' workload, which he'll be able to do if RHPs Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney show they can close games successfully. Jones might need to be limited to no more than two games in a row.

--C Ivan Rodriguez sat out the last two games before the All-Star break as Detroit decided to let all his aches and pains have the benefit of five days off. Rodriguez is expected to start Thursday night in Baltimore.

--SS Edgar Renteria missed the last three games before the All-Star break to allow his sore hamstring rest. Manager Jim Leyland wanted to play him but opted to allow six days off hoping to get him back to 100 percent.

--DH Gary Sheffield didn't play Sunday and might see his playing time reduced because rookies Matt Joyce and Clete Thomas are playing well. Sheffield returned from the disabled list in late June with a flourish against the St. Louis Cardinals but has tailed off since. Over his last 13 games, he had not hit a home run and is only batting .163 (8-for-49).

--RF Magglio Ordonez is slated for a one-game DH rehab assignment Monday for low Class A West Michigan. He will return to the Tigers' roster after the All-Star break. West Michigan is the only Detroit farm club playing Monday the club wanted to send Ordonez to as he recuperates from an oblique strain.

--LHP Dontrelle Willis ended his stay in Detroit on Sunday with another bullpen session to work on smoothing out his delivery. "Sometimes if you work hard but you have bad habits, you're going to have problems," Willis said. "So you just have to break it down and tell yourself that you're not as good as you want to be and be honest with yourself and go from there." "The true test is when Dontrelle gets back down there pitching to hitters and seeing where he stands and seeing how his control is and seeing how his health is, his knee is," Manager Jim Leyland said. "Those are the issues that are most important. The results to me are throwing strikes in the strike zone, getting people out in the strike zone. That's the kind of progress I'm looking for." Willis returned to Detroit early in the week for a cortisone shot to his ailing right knee. He returns to high Class A Lakeland on Monday to continue working on his delivery.

BY THE NUMBERS: 4 -- Players who have hit their first Major League home run this season for Detroit after OF Clete Thomas got his Sunday. Others collecting their first homers were OF Matt Joyce, 1B Jeff Larish and IF Michael Hollimon.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's been a dream to sign a professional contract. Playing baseball has always been my passion. Sitting at home wasn't really working for me, it got really boring, so I figured I'd come out and play." -- RHP Ryan Perry of Arizona, Detroit's top June draft choice, after signing a $1.48 million bonus contract and reporting Friday to the Tigers' spring training base to start his pro career.

Happy All-Star Break everyone. We all know this story, but this was what was on the Daily Wire today...

Tigers' Ordonez 1-for-4 in Class-A rehab start
Updated: July 15, 2008, 11:24 AM EST
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (AP) - Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez was 1-for-4 with a run scored in a rehabilitation appearance with the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night.

He singled, reached base on a fielding error, popped out and grounded out in the Whitecaps' 10-2 win over Peoria.
Ordonez is on the 15-day disabled list for a strained oblique muscle in his abdomen.

The Tigers say he could return when Detroit resumes play Thursday at Baltimore.

Ordonez is hitting .307 for Detroit with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs. He hit .363 last season on won the AL batting title.

July 21, 2008

--RHP Justin Verlander came within one out of recording a three-hit win Sunday. Verlander was lifted after walking his third batter of the game (he threw a double-play grounder to take his second walk off the bases at the start of the ninth inning) but RHP Todd Jones closed it out to improve Verlander to 6-0 in his last eight starts. Verlander was consistently 93-95 mph with his fastball and his curve was excellent as he threw first-pitch strikes to get ahead and then had the Orioles hitting his pitches to make outs. He retired 16 in a row after giving up an RBI double in the second.

--LF Marcus Thames made outs his first two times up on sliders thrown by Baltimore starter LHP Brian Burres. Not so the third time. Thames was looking for a slider, got it and curved a solo home run around the left field foul pole Sunday to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth. He leads the Tigers with 19 home runs in many fewer at-bats than the teammates closest to him.
--RF Magglio Ordonez pulled his 13th home run Sunday and also added a single to continue his solid hitting since the All-Star break. Ordonez is 5-for-18 with a home run and three RBIs in four games since the All-Star game. He's pulled the ball a little more than usual but it's only a four-game sample and not a trend.

--UT Ryan Raburn subbed Sunday for 2B Placido Polanco, who got a day off on a steamy 96-degree day in Baltimore. Raburn contributed a pair of RBI singles to Detroit's attack, in the sixth and eighth innings. The first one he took right back up the middle while the second was past a drawn-in third baseman to left field. He fills in capably at second, third and all three outfield spots, as well as being the emergency catcher.

--UT Brandon Inge put on another solid show at third base Sunday, especially the final out. Every time he's put at the position he demonstrates his superiority over just about any other third baseman in the league. On Sunday, he made a diving stop of a shot down the line, then threw across the diamond from one knee to get the final out of the game with runners on first and second in a 5-1 game. Inge also contributed an RBI groundout in the eighth. Saturday he caught the first eight innings then switched to third base for the last two. He was playing third Sunday although regular 3B Carlos Guillen reported to the park just before game time.

--SS Edgar Renteria rested his sore hamstring Sunday, with IF Ramon Santiago playing short. Santiago is an excellent defensive shortstop whom the club feels would wear down under the strain of playing every day. He singled twice Sunday and is a viable short-term alternative to the struggling Renteria.

--LHP Bobby Seay gave up his first home run to a left-handed hitter as a Detroit pitcher on Saturday night. He has been at better than a .300 clip by southpaw swingers this season after dominating them a year ago.

--3B Carlos Guillen rejoined the Tigers before Sunday's game at Baltimore after taking leave to be with his wife following the All-Star game. He didn't play because he hasn't swung a bat since the break. "She's doing better," Guillen said of his wife, Amelia, who gave birth to a daughter on July 7. "Tuesday morning, she woke up bleeding and the doctor sent her to the hospital for surgery to stop the bleeding." He should be available to play Monday in Kansas City.

--1B/3B Jeff Larish made his first major league start at third base Saturday night. The normal first baseman said he'd played third and short in high school and some third base as a freshman at Arizona State but switched across the diamond his sophomore year and hadn't been back until playing three games at the hot corner for the Toledo Mud Hens this summer. "I always loved playing shortstop and I tried to get them to let me play there in the minors," Larish said. "But they wouldn't let me." Larish handled two chances without an error in his debut and UT Ryan Raburn replaced him for the sixth after the Tigers took a 10-9 lead. He hit a two-run home run in the first and added an RBI double in the sixth.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3/8 -- Hat sizes RHP Fernando Rodney shrank after getting his first haircut since Sept., 2005. "No mas long hair," Rodney said, mixing Spanish and English, after paying teammate RHP Freddy Dolsi, a polished amateur barber, to cut his hair Saturday. Rodney's hat size is now 7 3/8, down from 7 3/4.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm fortunate to have really great parents. They sat me down (last year) and said, 'Hey, if you turn down this money, you have to forfeit looking back. If you go back to school, you're buying into the program and the rearview mirrors are off.' You can't say, 'What if?' I tried my best to focus on what I had in front of me." --RHP Scott Green, who signed for $373,000 as Detroit's third-round draft choice after turning down $800,000 from Boston (15th round) in 2007 to return to Kentucky for his senior season.

July 22, 2008

--RHP Zach Miner made a successful return to the Detroit rotation with six innings of three-hit shutout ball. Miner didn't try to overthrow his fastball, and as a result, it had some devastating sink most of the time. He also worked in some changeups. Miner threw 88 pitches, walking one and striking out one.

--RF Matt Joyce made the decision to rest RF Magglio Ordonez a sound one, slamming a three-run home run the other way for his 10th homer of the season in just 105 at-bats. He later added an RBI triple into the right-field corner in the seventh and two singles to leave himself just a double shy of the cycle. Joyce is hitting his way into playing time.

--RF Magglio Ordonez got the night off even though he just returned from the disabled list. The Tigers are going through a stretch of games (Baltimore and Kansas City) in hot, steamy weather so manager Jim Leyland will use his bench extensively in the seven-game period.

--1B/3B Jeff Larish was optioned back to Toledo to make room for RHP Zach Miner to join the Tigers' rotation. Larish did well and also made his big league debut at third base in his brief return to Detroit.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi has had four straight rough appearances since the All-Star break. The rookie pitched a scoreless seventh but didn't get any of the four batters out he faced in the eighth and all wound up scoring. He's allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings over his last four games. A factor Monday might have been the 27 minutes he spent on the bench while Detroit was scoring 10 runs in the top of the eighth.

--C Ivan Rodriguez drew two walks, giving him 19 walks this season or 10 more than he drew all of last year. One of those bases on balls came with the bases loaded. It is likely he will sit out either Tuesday night's game or Wednesday afternoon's contest.

--1B Miguel Cabrera drove in six runs with five hits, both matching career highs. Cabrera sent three of his hits to right field to take advantage of a shift Kansas City put on which had the second baseman playing almost directly behind the base.

--RHP Aquilino Lopez came to rescue RHP Freddy Dolsi in the eighth inning. Dolsi had given up four hits and Lopez came in to put out the fire with just one additional run scoring. Lopez got drummed in his last appearance, in Baltimore, but threw strikes with something on them Monday and was allowed to finish the game.

--3B Carlos Guillen returned to Detroit's lineup and looked like he'd never been away. Guillen collected three hits, batted from both sides of the plate, and scored five times. He also played despite knowing his wife had to return to the hospital, which is why he missed Detroit's series in Baltimore.

July 23, 2008

LHP Kenny Rogers couldn't survive a rain delay, but he made it through six innings to earn a victory over Kansas City. Once Rogers got into a rhythm after giving up two hits and a run in the first inning, he settled in and allowed just two hits in his other five innings as he picked up his eighth win. He was working outside and inside, right on the corners. Rogers threw one pitch in the seventh before the rains came and delayed completion of the game for 2 hours, 20 minutes. Three of the hits Rogers allowed were by 2B Mark Grudzielanek (15-for-23 lifetime against Rogers).

--2B Placido Polanco isn't known as a power guy, but he showed he can turn on a good fastball once in a while. Polanco drilled a tie-breaking solo home run in the third inning to give Detroit a 2-1 lead. Polanco, who also doubled and scored twice, lined the ball over the left-field fence for his fourth home run. He got jammed but hit a into a forceout at second in the ninth to drive in a run.
--SS Edgar Renteria ended another one of his slumps with a bloop single to center in the sixth. Renteria had been 0-for-12 until the leadoff single. He's been hobbled since before the All-Star break by a hamstring pull but is playing through it. "I wouldn't not play him unless I thought he wasn't going to get the job done," manager Jim Leyland said. "But there are going to be balls in emergency situations where he's not going to take a chance at the ball at all."

--OF Matt Joyce is showing some maturity at the plate for a rookie. Joyce drew a bases-loaded walk in a situation where a strikeout or a double play would have killed a Detroit rally. It was especially notable in that it came one night after he had four hits and five RBI and thus could have been expected to be swinging at anything.

--C Ivan Rodriguez is slated to sit out Wednesday afternoon's game because it follows a night contest in which he played. UT Brandon Inge is expected to catch. Rodriguez has been hitting well since he began receiving more rest, and the Tigers would like to keep it that way. He got his only hit of the game, a shot up the middle off a fastball, when play resumed after the rain delay.

--RF Magglio Ordonez returned to action following a game off. Ordonez grounded an RBI single to right in the first with two outs, the first of his three hits. Ordonez grounded an RBI single to left in the ninth. He continues to spray his hits around the field.

--RHP Fernando Rodney is getting positive dividends from his every-other-day throwing program. Rodney came in for the seventh inning following a 2-hour, 20-minute rain delay and struck out four batters in the two innings he worked. He set down six straight after allowing a leadoff single. Rodney has been going more to his fastball, which he is beginning to command better since the initiation of his throwing program, and relying less on his trademark changeup. Rodney has struck out eight of the last 13 batters he has faced. His fastball is in the 95-97 mph range.

--RHP Joel Zumaya is getting some ninth-inning experience as a possible prelude to taking over as Detroit's closer next year. Zumaya came on to finish up a 7-1 game and faced four batters, allowing a two-out triple. He didn't throw any three-digit fastballs, but he mixed in some curves.

--RHP Armando Galarraga can expect to face more and more left-handed hitters as he builds up a track record in the majors. Galarraga, 7-4, has a terrific slider -- two of them, in fact -- but they break in to left-handed hitters. Lefties are hitting .280 against him with a .342 on-base percentage whereas Galarraga holds right-handed hitters to a .237 average. Ten of the 13 home runs he has allowed have come off the bats of left-handed hitters. His next start will be Wednesday at Kansas City. On the road he has a 2.85 ERA vs. a 4.24 mark at Comerica Park.

July 24, 2008

--RHP Armando Galarraga brought both his "A" and "B" sliders, retiring the first 18 Kansas City batters he faced before giving up a hit and a run in the seventh. Galarraga was throwing his fastball as high as 93 mph but it was his fast and slow sliders that had Royals hitters waving at air or hitting ground balls most of the day. He threw 83 pitches and gave up three hits with seven strikeouts. KC put five left-handed batters in its lineup, knowing lefties have greatest success against Galarraga, but the rookie gave them just two hits in 13 at-bats.

--C Ivan Rodriguez got the day off in line with manager Jim Leyland's preference to have him sit out day games that follow night contests. With Detroit idle Thursday, that will give Rodriguez two days of rest before his next game.

--UT Brandon Inge caught Wednesday for regular C Ivan Rodriguez. He has caught 20 games this season without making an error. While his hitting suffers when he's behind the plate, Inge still excels defensively no matter where he plays. He was 1-for-4 Wednesday.

--LF Matt Joyce is temporarily crowding power-hitting LF Marcus Thames out of the Detroit outfield picture. Joyce started all three games of Detroit's series at Kansas City while Thames just played the first. A lot of that has to do with the fact that manager Jim Leyland is taking advantage of a hot hitter but part of it is due to matchups. Both players will steal at-bats from DH Gary Sheffield from time to time.

--1B Miguel Cabrera is starting to hit his stride with the Tigers. The perception is that he's struggled -- but it's only in comparison to himself. His numbers are among the best in the league. Cabrera had a two-run single to left and an RBI single to right. He is second on the team in home runs and first in RBIs.

--LHP Casey Fossum pitched an inning of one-hit relief, the eighth. Fossum is turning into a reliable early relief pitcher for the Tigers, able to come in early and work 2-3 innings or get through a run of left-handed (and right-handed) hitters later in the game. He was very shaky in his first few games after being brought up from the minors but has settled in nicely.

--RHP Todd Jones didn't use any scare tactics in finishing up a one-sided game. Jones, who often struggles when asked to work non-save situations, faced just four Kansas City batters in cleaning up a 7-1 Detroit victory. He was used because Detroit is off Thursday and he had not pitched since Monday night.

July 25, 2008 (5 months until Merry Christmas )

--RHP Freddy Dolsi hopes to be able to pitch Friday after having to sit out two games due to right shoulder fatigue. Dolsi worked three straight games in Baltimore, took Sunday off, then worked an inning-plus Monday night in Kansas City.

He pitched a scoreless seventh against the Royals, but after a 27-minute, 10-run Tigers eighth, he failed to retire any of the four batters he faced. He has no strikeouts over his last five outings and was the losing pitcher in two of those games.
"It appears to be muscular in nature," trainer Kevin Rand said of Dolsi's ailment. "I just think he's a little tired. Hopefully, with the off day, he'll be ready to go again on Friday. The good thing about it is that he said something and didn't try to be a hero for a couple days. He gave us a chance to work with him, and hopefully we can get him ready to really help us this weekend against Chicago."

--LHP Nate Robertson has been cuffed around in four of his last five starts, and the Tigers hope he will show them what he displayed at Seattle on July 6 when he gave up just one run in nine innings. Robertson will open the series against the Chicago White Sox on Friday night. In his last start, he failed to hold a 6-0 lead, getting chased after 2 1/3 innings. Robertson has split his two starts against the White Sox this season, including 6 1/3 innings of three-run ball to beat them on June 10 in Detroit.

--SS Edgar Renteria might be coming out of his slump after posting two-hit games in each of his last two outings. Renteria has also been showing more range and less limp lately as he battles to play through a slight hamstring muscle pull.

--RHP Fernando Rodney looks to be getting back into his form of 2006, the possible result of every-other-day throwing sessions and increased reliance on his fastball. Rodney struggled in his return from spending the season on the disabled list, giving up five runs in two games. But he has not allowed a run in his last four (4 2/3 innings).

He has sprinkled in use of his slider at the urging of bullpen coach Jeff Jones and, noting that hitters were waiting for his changeup, is making greater use of a fastball that is peaking in the high 90s. "He's really good," manager Jim Leyland said. "People tend to forget just how good he was in 2006. He was our closer at the beginning when (Todd) Jones was out, and did a heck of a job."

--RHP Joel Zumaya is again flashing the form that had Detroit thinking he could be its closer after RHP Todd Jones is through. "Is the equipment there to do it?" manager Jim Leyland asked. "Yeah." Leyland says he's now sorry he mentioned he was thinking in terms of returning Zumaya to a starter's role in a couple of years. It was a distraction. Right now Zumaya is functioning effectively as a setup man and occasional finisher. His ERA through 13 games is 1.76. He is forming a solid setup combination with RHP Fernando Rodney. "When they walk in the clubhouse," Leyland said, "it makes a difference. These guys got a presence."

July 28, 2008

--RHP Zach Miner turned in his second solid start since returning to Detroit's rotation. Miner, who threw six shutout innings in his first outing, went six innings and allowed Chicago two runs Sunday. "This was similar to his other (start)," manager Jim Leyland said. "He had a sinker, breaking ball, changeup; his breaking ball was a little better."

He equaled his career best with five strikeouts and again was on top of things with first-pitch strikes. His sinking fastball peaked at 95 mph but mainly his was a 90-92, which is where he needs to be to get good sink on the ball. "He stayed within himself most of the time, didn't try to do too much," Leyland said. "The one thing that really helped him (coming back from the minors) was he got his changeup back."

--CF Curtis Granderson will remain in the leadoff spot at all times, manager Jim Leyland confirmed during the weekend. Granderson hit his first home run since July 12. He has 20 hits off southpaws this season, one more than all of last year, and is hitting .303 off lefties. "I'm going to etch that in stone," Leyland said Saturday. "I've thought about it some more. He's our catalyst. He creates stuff for us, plus he's better against lefties now than he was. I think it was good to keep him down there (eighth and ninth against left-handers) until he got more used to it. But he's staying in against lefties and taking the ball the other way (to left) better. He's signed for a while, and rightfully so. There comes a time when you push the envelope, and that's what I'm going to do with him. I'm not going to sit him against lefties anymore."

--RF Magglio Ordonez missed out on his chance Sunday to record his fifth straight three-hit game, going 1-for-4 in Detroit's game against Chicago's White Sox. It would have been the first time since KC's George Brett did so in 1976. Ordonez got a post-game official scoring change Saturday to get his fourth consecutive three-hit game, a single to second that was thrown away at first on a tough chance. Ordonez is the first Tiger to have four straight games of at least three hits since Willie Horton in 1965. Florida's Cody Ross, an ex-Tiger, had three hits in each game of a four-game set at Colorado earlier this month.

--1B Miguel Cabrera had a two-run third-inning single Sunday to finish off a 13-RBI week. Cabrera was 13-for-28 without a home run and appears to be hitting the form that he reached with Florida before being traded to Detroit and signing a long-term contract this winter. Cabrera is hitting the ball hard to all fields.

--RHP Joel Zumaya is listed as day-to-day after being lifted in the eighth inning Sunday due to right triceps tightness. "I don't think it appears to be anything serious," manager Jim Leyland said, "but we'll have to watch." Zumaya had a five-pitch seventh, walked the first batter he faced in the eighth and got a fly ball out on his only pitch to the last batter he faced. Trainer Kevin Rand ran out, conferred with Zumaya along with Leyland and the hard-thrower was removed from the game. His arm was swinging freely as he left the field. Leyland said earlier Zumaya needs to mix in his curve ball more to be successful because even a 100 mph fastball isn't always enough.

--RHP Fernando Rodney is Detroit's new closer -- or at least he will be when he's able to pitch again. Rodney threw 42 pitches Sunday to get the last five outs of Detroit's 6-4 victory over Chicago. He entered with the score 6-1 and thus did not get a save. He walked two batters and two runners scored (one Joel Zumaya's and one of his own) before ending the eighth. He struck out the side in the ninth but went to 3-2 on every batter and two of the three fanned on fastballs out of the strike zone. "He can't throw 40 pitches," manager Jim Leyland said. "Or he won't close. Very long."

--RHP Todd Jones has, at least temporarily, lost his job as Detroit's closer. "I am 40, so you knew this day had to come some time," Jones said. "I don't like it but I accept it because I respect the man that told me." On Friday, Jones blew his third save chance out of his last seven opportunities. He has given up 15 hits over 9 1/3 innings in that span and opponents are hitting .375 against him in the last month.

--LF Marcus Thames started his second game in a row Sunday after sitting out three straight. Thames broke an 0-for-6 string with his 20th home run. He had been seeing nothing but breaking balls -- most of them outside -- until seeing three straight fastballs on the at-bat where he belted his home run over the left field fence.

--C Ivan Rodriguez got Saturday off, apparently so Brandon Inge could catch Justin Verlander, and responded Sunday with his fourth four-hit game of the season. Rodriguez will probably catch three of Detroit's four games in Cleveland, with Inge catching the other one (or two). Inge caught Verlander after the two teamed up in his previous start for one of Verlander's better starts of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- One-run losses at home Detroit suffered at the hands of Minnesota and Chicago in seven games, two of which the Tigers won. Also the number of consecutive three-hit games RF Magglio Ordonez was seeking as he went 1-for-4 Sunday, which would have been the first time that had happened in the majors since George Brett in 1976.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You have to live with the fact that someone might write something disruptive to your team, but that there's no truth to it whatsoever. Every once in a while you see a player get a little nervous in the clubhouse, but that's another thing you learn to live with because it's only natural for reporters to do their job. I understand that. You have to cope with that. But I don't get too excited, because I know what's going on. Besides, I've always told my players, if your name is involved in a trade, and you ask me, I'll tell you." -- Manager Jim Leyland of Detroit on rumors that always buzz around as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.

July 29, 2008

--LHP Kenny Rogers threw two mistakes that ended up as home runs worth three runs. C Kelly Shoppach slammed a 2-0 fastball over the left-field fence for a solo home run in the sixth and 2B Asdrubal Cabrera put a soft 3-1 off-speed pitch into the left-field seats with a teammate on later in the inning. Rogers showed his Gold Glove talents three times during his 5 2/3 innings of work. He gave up nine hits but might have fared better with some offensive support.

--RHP Joel Zumaya played some light catch Monday afternoon and pronounced himself ready to help the Tigers. "He said he could have pitched," manager Jim Leyland said, "but I wasn't going to pitch him." Zumaya suffered tightness in his right triceps Sunday and had to come out of the game after 1 1/3 innings.
--RHP Fernando Rodney didn't pitch Monday and probably couldn't have. Manager Jim Leyland indicated he was not going to use his newly installed closer -- and might not use him Tuesday, either, as he recovers from a 42-pitch outing Sunday.

--RHP Aquilino Lopez saved Detroit's battered bullpen with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. The Tigers didn't have RHPs Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya available, so they needed someone to shoulder the load after starting LHP Kenny Rogers was done.

--CF Curtis Granderson collected half of Detroit's four hits off Cleveland starter Paul Byrd. Most of the Tigers were trying to go the other way against Byrd, but Granderson yanked a double to the right-field corner in the sixth and singled to center in the eighth.

--DH Gary Sheffield did not play as his manager elected to go with rookie OF Matt Joyce in left field and LF Marcus Thames at DH. Sheffield was only 4-for-25 last week, although he did drive in six runs. He has been sporadic this season.

--LF Matt Joyce got the start after not starting Saturday and Sunday against Chicago. Joyce got one of Detroit's four hits, a single to center in the seventh. It was only his second hit since going 4-for-6 a week ago.

--3B Carlos Guillen was one of the few Detroit players with a decent hitting history against Cleveland RHP Paul Byrd, but it was worse going out than it was coming in. Guillen entered the game batting .410 (16-for-39) in his career against Byrd but went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and a walk.
