Nothing at all. Up till the 1968 Theft Act, larceny was the legal term
for theft, but due to no one else using the word besides lawyers, made
it obsolete with the Theft Act, so the word has since been redundant in
British law, though whether anywhere else still uses it would be
another question for here.

THEFT n, the act of stealing

LARCENY n, theft

Depending on where you are in the U.S., there are varying degrees of
both. For instance, Grand Theft, Petty Larceny, Grand Larceny, etc.

Thats exactly what I found when I searched it...

Alright! Thanks!

I think I'll start using that word exclusively - it sounds smarter.

Tigers pluck power arm in Round 1
Perry choice marks third year in a row club takes pitcher first
By Jason Beck / MLB.com

DETROIT -- Some of the radar guns had Ryan Perry's fastball at 100 mph last weekend. The Tigers scout had him at 99.

That was fine with scout Tom Osowski and scouting director David Chadd. They'd seen plenty from him already.

"I think I saw Ryan Perry this spring more than I saw my wife," Chadd said Thursday after Detroit made Perry its first-round selection -- 21st overall -- in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

Long before the Tigers had drawn attention for their willingness to spend above slot over the past few years, Detroit was best known for president/general manager Dave Dombrowski's affinity for power arms. And with Perry, a junior reliever at the University of Arizona, the Tigers found one of the harder throwers available. He'll have some work to do to round out his repertoire, but with a fastball that consistently topped out at 98 mph, it's a very solid start.

A preseason All-American according to Baseball America, Perry began the college season as the third starter on Arizona's staff and tossed seven scoreless innings as part of a shutout of Notre Dame. After struggling in late March, however, the Wildcats moved him to the bullpen, where he blossomed as part of a late-inning trio that included fellow first-rounder Daniel Schlereth.

For the season, Perry owns a 6-3 record and 3.07 ERA in 29 appearances. The difference in statistics between starting and relief, however, was dramatic. When he pitched out of the bullpen, he posted a 1.74 ERA and .179 opposing batting average against, scattering 29 hits over 46 2/3 innings with 12 walks and 44 strikeouts. He retired 16 consecutive batters April 13 against Indiana State after throwing his fastball no slower than 95 mph earlier in the week against San Diego State.

A similar kind of performance was on display last weekend in an NCAA tournament regional in nearby Ann Arbor, Mich. After allowing a hit to the first batter he faced in the opener against Eastern Michigan, he racked up five consecutive strikeouts. He tossed a scoreless inning against host Michigan the next day, putting up that triple-digit fastball, before retiring one batter against Kentucky to help clinch Arizona's trip to the Super Regionals.

Perry was working out with his team Thursday for that tournament this weekend at the University of Miami when he received the news.

Though last weekend's dominance came in the Tigers' backyard, the club had been tracking him since the Cape Cod League last summer. They saw the stuff, especially the fastball, and were impressed.

"That's when we first identified Ryan as a top right-handed pitcher for us going into this year," Chadd said. "The one constant thing that Ryan brought for us this spring was the power."

It's more than just the fastball that appealed to scouts. Perry also throws a slider that Chadd identified as a power pitch despite the velocity readings and a changeup with deception for hitters who gear up for the heater.

He comes into pro ball with a solid foundation of three pitches. It's the consistency on the secondary ones that will be a key for him, as his history shows.

"Ryan came to the University of Arizona as a shortstop," Chadd said, "so he has limited innings on his arm. He needs to develop his delivery and some consistency."

It has not been a traditional progression. A year after Perry moved over to pitching, an offseason motorcycle accident cost him the first month and a half of his sophomore season. Once he returned to the field, he split his 14 games between starting and relief, striking out 35 batters over 34 innings but allowing a 6.35 ERA.

Perry becomes the fifth pitcher taken with the Tigers' top pick in the last six years, and the fourth college arm. Detroit selected high schooler Rick Porcello last summer after taking North Carolina's Andrew Miller in 2006, Old Dominion's Justin Verlander in 2004 and Wake Forest's Kyle Sleeth in 2003.

Unlike those hurlers, though, Perry has worked primarily as a reliever, raising the question of whether he'll be viewed as a future cog in the rotation or the bullpen. Chadd, for one, thinks he could do either. In that sense, he compared Perry to Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon-- whom Chadd drafted as Boston's scouting director -- and Yankees starter turned reliever turned starter Joba Chamberlain.

"I think you can use him either way," Chadd said, "I think he has the delivery and the arm action to start. But it's up to the preference of the organization."

Publicly, at least, that wasn't immediately clear. Detroit's first goal is to get him signed, though that isn't as big of a theme this time around compared to past years. It's feasible that Perry could progress quickly if he's a reliever, a fact that isn't lost on the Tigers, but Chadd said how Perry progresses as a pitcher will determine how quickly he progresses through the system.

Earlier in the day, the Tigers took part in Major League Baseball's ceremonial Negro Leaguers Draft by honoring former Detroit Stars pitcher Cecil Kaiser.

Biographical Data
Player Name:Ryan Perry
Position:Starting/Relief Pitcher
School:University of Arizona
School Type:College
Academic Class:Junior
Birthdate:02/13/87
Height:6'4"
Weight:200 lbs.
Bats:Right
Throws:Right
Report Date(s):03/18/08
Game(s):Arizona State
Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Perry threw his fastball anywhere from 93-98 mph and sits comfortably at 96-98 mph when pitching out of the bullpen.
Fastball movement:It has pretty good sink when it's down in the zone.
Slider:A bit inconsistent, it's been plus at times, but it can be sweepy and more average. He throws it in the 78-82 mph range.
Changeup:It's a plus pitch for him. He throws it 82-87 mph with good arm speed and deception. There's good sink to it as well.
Control:He throws strikes, but has a tendency to elevate the ball in the zone at times.
Poise:He's got good mound presence and goes right after hitters, especially when coming out of the pen.
Physical Description:Perry is wiry strong, a good athlete who is lean, but pretty physical, kind of like a slightly stronger Brandon Morrow.
Medical Update:A motorcycle accident limited him in his sophomore year, but he's now healthy.
Strengths:Two plus pitches, with a chance for three. Size and clean arm action say he should be durable.
Weaknesses:He
opens up early on his delivery, making it easier for guys to see the
pitch coming. He didn't pitch at all in high school, so he's still more
of a thrower than a pitcher.
Summary:More
than one scout has scratched his head about the Arizona right-hander,
who has a plus fastball up to 98 mph, a plus changeup and a slider that
is a plus at times. Despite this arsenal, he's been hittable due to a
tendency to open up on his delivery too early and keep balls up in the
zone. Some see him as a reliever, and he should move quickly that way,
but his size, arm action and repertoire say that a patient club could
end up with a front-of-the-rotation starter.

Draft Report: Magnificent Seven
Eye on five right-handed hurlers and a pair of position players
By Jonathan Mayo / MLB.com

Leading up to the 2008 First-Year Player Draft on June 5, the Draft Report will take a weekly in-depth look at some of the most promising high school and collegiate talent that could comprise this year's Draft class.

It sure is a busy time in the wonderful world of baseball, isn't it?

The Major League season is in its second week. The Minor League docket just kicked off last Thursday. And amateur baseball in this draft season is in full swing.

With everything going on, we're keeping this week's Draft Report on the brief side, going with a lucky seven. After fixing a small accounting error, that brings the grand total up to 75 reports to date.

As reported a couple of weeks ago in this very space, top prospect and Vanderbilt third baseman Pedro Alvarez made his return to the Vandy lineup this past weekend after breaking a hamate bone in his hand early in the season. He didn't seem to have much rust, going 4-for-11 with two homers and a pair of doubles at Mississippi.

It's a bit too early to talk about who's going to go where and to which teams come draft day, but the rumors are always fun. Latest one TDR heard had the top of the draft going something like this:

1. Tampa -- Tim Beckham
2. Pittsburgh -- Gordon Beckham
3. Kansas City -- Aaron Crow
4. Baltimore -- Brian Matusz
5. San Francisco -- Buster Posey

The second Beckham (no, not David) and his climb was well-documented last week. Posey, the Florida State catcher, seems to have just as much "helium," thanks to the fact he's hitting .458, slugging .833 and posting a .554 OBP. His 1.387 OPS puts him fifth in all of Division I. Beckham (Gordon) is seventh. Of course, Alvarez is just coming back and there's a whole lot of baseball to be played. That's why it's recommended to grab a whole handful of salt while reading this. In early April, none of this is even close to being set in stone. With that disclaimer, it's time to hit this week's report.

Scott Gorgen, RHP
University of California, Irvine

Irvine's Friday night starter has everything you want in an ace -- good
stuff, great command, tremendous makeup -- except size. Even though he
gave up four runs in a recent start at Cal Poly, he continued to show
that size doesn't matter by pitching eight innings, striking out 12 and
picking up the victory. Complete Report

Sonny Gray, RHP
Smyrna HS, Tenn.

Thought to be the top prep player coming out of Tennessee, Gray looked
very much like the pitcher who impressed scouts over the summer,
showing a low 90s fastball and a plus breaking ball that enabled him to
strike out 16 while yielding two earned runs on three hits and three
walks against Mt. Juliet High School. Complete Report

Brett Marshall, RHP
Sterling HS, Baytown, TX

Marshall may have lost a recent match-up against Atascocita High
School, but he gave up just two unearned runs on three hits while
striking out seven over seven innings in what was termed his best start
this season. Complete Report

Ryan Perry, RHP (picked by Tigers)
University of Arizona
Perry's stuff says he should be an ace in the making. His performance
for much of the season, curiously, says otherwise. In a relief
appearance against Arizona State recently, he was on, tossing 2 1/3
hitless innings while striking out a pair. Complete Report

Shane Peterson, 1B/OF
Long Beach State University

Peterson has had a fine college career, hitting for average, playing
decent defense at first and in the outfield, even stealing a base here
or there. He hasn't hit for power, which many feel is needed at his
given positions. In a weekend series against Cal, he went 2-for-11. Complete Report

Zach Stewart, RHP
Texas Tech University

At his third college in three years -- he was at Angelo State
University and then was a starter at North Central Texas College last
year -- Stewart has settled in as a top closer at Texas Tech. In an
outing against Missouri, he pitched a perfect inning, striking out two.
He threw 15 pitches -- almost all fastballs -- 10 for strikes. Only one
Mizzou hitter even made contact. Complete Report

Niko Vasquez, SS
Durango HS, Nev.

Vasquez returned to the field at the very end of March after missing
the first part of the season due to academic ineligibility. His
teammates were undoubtedly pleased to have his power bat and strong arm
back in the lineup at short. Complete Report

Detroits Round 2 pick:

Biographical Data
Player Name:Cody Satterwhite
Position:Starting Pitcher
School:University of Mississippi
School Type:College
Academic Class:Junior
Birthdate:01/27/87
Height:6'5"
Weight:200 lbs.
Bats:Right
Throws:Right
Report Date(s):04/20/08
Game(s):South Carolina
Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Satterwhite touched 95 mph and pitched at 92-93 mph.
Fastball movement:He had good movement and life on his fastball.
Slider:It's a pretty good slider, though inconsistent.
Changeup:His changeup is average at best.
Control:His command is up-and-down because of inconsistencies with his delivery.
Poise:He seems to lack some maturity on the mound at times.
Physical Description:Satterwhite is everything you want from a pitcher, with a tall, lean, projectable body and plenty of room for growth.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:At times, he has electric stuff, particularly with the fastball and slider.
Weaknesses:He
gets hit more than he should considering his stuff. Problems with his
arm slot and release point have kept him from being consistent.
Summary:Originally
the Ole Miss Saturday starter, Satterwhite got bumped to Sundays
because of his uneven performance. Scouts still love his body and his
arm strength, but he's gotten hit much more than you'd think he should
based on his electric stuff. The issues largely come from
inconsistencies in his delivery and despite the subpar season, a team
that feels it can tweak his mechanics is still likely to draft the
right-hander fairly early.

Detroit's Round 3 pick:

Biographical Data
Player Name:Scott Green
Position:Pitcher
School:University of Kentucky
School Type:College
Academic Class:Junior
Birthdate:08/10/85
Height:6'7"
Weight:240 lbs.
Bats:Right
Throws:Right
Report Date(s):03/09/08
Game(s):Purdue
Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Green can throw his fastball in the 88-93 mph range.
Fastball movement:His fastball has plus life.
Slider:He throws it 78-82 mph and it projects to be average.
Changeup:It's slightly below-average and he throws it 79-80 mph.
Control:His command is slightly below-average.
Poise:He's shown some decent poise despite struggles this season, sitting in the bullpen taking abuse from fans without responding.
Physical Description:Green is a big right-hander with a prototypical pitcher's body, kind of like Ben McDonald and muscular like a Kyle Farnsworth.
Medical Update:He's
had a series of injuries, the most serious one being to his elbow that
required Tommy John surgery and forced him to red-shirt in 2006.
Strengths:Size and arm strength.
Weaknesses:Injury history and a bad delivery.
Summary:Green
turned down a large bonus offer a year ago when the Red Sox drafted him
in the 15th round, hoping he'd have a strong junior season and vault
himself into the first round. Whether he sees that kind of money again
remains to be seen, but his performance, one that's seen him taken from
the rotation and nearly buried in the bullpen at Kentucky, doesn't
point to a guy who's going to go early. That being said, his size and
arm strength will still be enough to intrigue someone to take a chance.

Detroit's Round 4 pick:

Biographical Data
Player Name:Brett Jacobson
Position:Starting Pitcher
School:Vanderbilt University
School Type:College
Academic Class:Junior
Birthdate:11/8/86
Height:6'6"
Weight:205 lbs.
Bats:Right
Throws:Right
Report Date(s):02/23/08
Game(s):DeMarini Invitational
Focus Area
Comments
Fastball:Jacobson threw his fastball 88-91 mph from a downhill plane.
Fastball movement:When he was down in the zone, there was some sink. However, he left his fastball up in this start
Curve:He's got a big 11-to-5 curve with a lot of depth that is an above-average pitch.
Changeup:His change has a chance to be a plus pitch with more development.
Control:It hasn't been much of an issue in the past, but he had no fastball command in this start.
Poise:He was OK on the mound in terms of presence.
Physical Description:Jacobson is a big, tall right-hander with some deception to his delivery.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths:Size, which he uses to his advantage on the mound, and the chance to have three average to above-average pitches.
Weaknesses:Some
don't like his less-than-clean delivery, in which he hides the ball
behind his shoulder. He'll need to show better fastball command to
garner serious attention.
Summary:With
a tall, projectable frame, scouts have always been intrigued with
Jacobson. He has the ability to throw three decent pitches -- fastball,
curve, changeup -- for strikes and from a downhill plane. He doesn't
have the prettiest delivery in the world and some issues with fastball
command hurt him early on this season, something he'll have to
straighten out to get serious consideration early in June.

Tigers' top draft pick can throw smoke

By JON PAUL MOROSI • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • June 5, 2008

Ryan Perry’s road to the first round began last year – with a motorcycle accident.

“I was a goof-off before that,” Perry said in a telephone interview on Thursday, when asked about the injuries that forced him to miss about half of his sophomore season at the University of Arizona.

“My work ethic and everything changed, when I was sitting in that hospital, not knowing if I was going to throw a ball again. The accident really changed my mentality.”

His focus sharpened, Perry has excelled this season. He is one of the most dominant college relievers in the country, as evidenced by back-to-back-to-back command performances in the Ann Arbor NCAA Regional last weekend.

The Wildcats won all three games, and Perry’s personal prize arrived on Thursday: The Tigers selected him in the first round of baseball’s amateur draft, 21st overall.

Perry, 21, has not allowed an earned run in his last nine appearances – an emphatic stretch run to a junior season closely monitored by Detroit scouts. His fastball reached 100 m.p.h. on some radar guns last weekend.

“I think I saw Ryan Perry more this spring than I saw my wife, Janet,” quipped David Chadd, the Tigers’ vice president of amateur scouting.

“We were on him, and we stayed on him.”

Perry won’t sign with Detroit right away, because Arizona is still alive in the NCAA tournament. The Wildcats open best-of-three Super Regional play at the University of Miami Friday afternoon, with a College World Series bid on the line.

Perry learned of his selection as he came off the field after practice on Thursday.

“It never seemed realistic until it happened,” he said. “I’ve been anxious for the last two months, thinking about where I’m going to go. It’s good to have it off my shoulders, so I can just focus on getting to Omaha.”

Perry said he was impressed by the atmosphere in Ann Arbor last weekend. A boisterous crowd of 4,154 – with an overwhelming majority rooting against him – crammed into Ray Fisher Stadium to witness Arizona’s 4-3 victory over Michigan on Saturday night.

He said he loves the adrenaline rush that comes with pitching in a hostile environment, but added, “I’m looking forward to having that same crowd back me up.”

Once his college season is over, Perry could agree to terms with the Tigers relatively quickly. Chadd said it’s possible that Perry will pitch at Class A West Michigan before the season is over.

Perry has been both a starter and reliever this season – his greatest success has been out of the bullpen – and said Thursday that he would be comfortable in either role. Chadd said it is too early to decide on his future role but did draw a comparison between Perry and Boston closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon, whom Chadd drafted during his tenure with the Red Sox, pitched mostly as a starter in the minors as a way of developing his repertoire.

Perry already possesses a powerful array of pitches, including a fastball that has averaged 95 to 98 m.p.h. He throws a sharp slider and has also shown a promising changeup.

The fastball-slider combination was more than enough for Perry last Friday. He entered in the midst of an Eastern Michigan rally and surrendered a two-run double to Jeff Davis on his very first pitch.

Then he struck out the next five batters.

“There is no question: That is an electric arm,” EMU head coach Jake Boss said Thursday. “It was pretty impressive, just watching his warm-up pitches.

“With his frame and how loose and easy his arm is, I would think that his mechanics will allow him to stay healthy for quite awhile. And 98 is 98. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the big leagues soon.”

Facts about the Tigers' No. 1 draft pick:

• Ryan Perry, RHP, University of Arizona

• Age: 21

• Height: 6-foot-4

• Weight: 200 lbs.

Perry pitched in each of Arizona’s three victories at the Ann Arbor NCAA Regional last weekend and touched 100 m.p.h. on some scouts’ radar guns. He’s an imposing figure on the mound and seems to enjoy entering pressure situations from the bullpen. Perry is the type of pitcher who could move quickly as a reliever, but the Tigers may take the time necessary to groom him for the starting rotation.

Tigers stock up on pitching during Draft
Detroit continues recent Draft trend, selecting 25 pitchers
By Scott McNeish / MLB.com

DETROIT -- The Tigers favored the college ranks when making their selections in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Of their 50 picks in the Draft, 44 came from college programs, meaning just six came from high school. By comparison, the Tigers went with 18 high school players a year ago.

The Tigers felt college was where they could best fill their needs, which, judging by a positional breakdown of their Draft, focused on pitching and up-the-middle positions. They picked 25 pitchers, of which 20 are right-handed, to go with six players each at catcher, shortstop and center field.

The pitcher-heavy Draft continued a recent trend. Detroit picked 25 pitchers last year and 28 in 2006.

After selecting four right-handers and a catcher on Day 1, the Tigers got nine hurlers with their first 12 picks on Day 2. For the day, they drafted 16 pitchers, the six shortstops, catchers and center fielders, plus four second basemen, two third basemen and a first baseman.

That included three talented relief pitchers early in the day. In Round 6, they picked Tyler Stohr from the University of North Florida, who had 10 saves and a 1.93 ERA this season. The Tigers went with Oklahoma State University reliever Robert Weinhardt in Round 10 and, surprisingly, got University of Southern Mississippi lefty closer Tyler Conn in the 14th round. Conn led the nation and set a record with 18 saves this season.

"At first, nobody wanted me in college," Conn recently told the Sun Herald (Biloxi, Miss.) newspaper. "Then I got to [junior college] and no Division I schools wanted me at first. Then I get two looks from pro scouts. I'm sure next year someone will say I can't go any further and I will keep proving them wrong. That's been my life story."

Meanwhile, the Tigers picked up Wichita State University center fielder Andy Dirks, who is hitting .399 this season, in the eighth round, and University of Northern Iowa shortstop Brandon Douglas, Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and Second Team All-America, with their 11th-round selection.

"In my opinion, Brandon is a kid who, given the right situation, has a chance to play professionally for a long time and maybe make it to the big leagues," UNI coach Rick Heller recently told The Cedar Rapids Gazette.

As for starting pitching, the Tigers got Old Dominion University righty Anthony Shawler, a First Team All-American last season who recorded 95 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings this season, in round nine, and University of Nebraska right-hander Thad Weber, who went 9-5 this season, in the 16th round.

The Tigers continued to pick pitchers, middle infielders, catchers and center fielders until finally picking a corner position with Oregon State University slugging first baseman Jordan Lennerton in round 33.

"It's going to be a great opportunity to be in the Detroit system," Lennerton told the Oregon State athletics Web site. "I'm excited. Hopefully, I'll be able to play every day for them."

One pick prior to Lennerton, the Tigers went with Michigan State University right-handed starter Mark Sorenson, son of former Major League pitcher Larry, who is a former radio announcer for the Tigers. Mark, a redshirt junior, went down with an injury his freshman year, but responded well on his way to Third Team All-Big Ten honors this season.

"After battling back from injury, I thought I had a good year and that helped me get drafted," he told the Michigan State athletics Web site. "I just wanted to show that I can pitch for a whole season and be effective."

One of Mark Sorenson's catchers at Michigan State, Eric Roof, went to the Tigers in round 46. His father is a baserunning coach in the Tigers system.

Keeping things in the Tigers family, they picked right-hander Matthew Robertson, brother of Tigers starting pitcher Nate, for the second straight year in the 49th round.

They also drafted both sons of Tigers vice president Al Avila. His eldest son, University of Alabama catcher Alex, went in the fifth round, while his other son, high school second baseman Alan, went in the 48th round.

Any player selected in this year's Draft has until Aug. 15 to sign with the team or, if eligible, they will be put in next year's Draft pool.
