Piazza retires after 19 seasons

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Mike Piazza is retiring from baseball following a 19-season career in which he became one of the top-hitting catchers in history.

"After discussing my options with my wife, family and agent, I felt it is time to start a new chapter in my life," he said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano. "It has been an amazing journey."

The 39-year-old Piazza was not on a team this season.

Taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 amateur draft, Piazza became a 12-time All-Star, making the NL team 10 consecutive times starting in 1993.

He finished with a .308 career average, 427 home runs and 1,335 RBIs for the Dodgers (1992-98), Florida (1998), New York Mets (1998-05), San Diego (2006) and Oakland (2007).

I'll take Mauer on my team personally - he can hit. I could care less what he looks like.

No, it just happens that whenever I think someone is hot they end up being a catcher and I don't even know it, lol. When I first laid eyes on Pudge I did this: and didn't even know what position he played. Can't think of any other catchers out there now that make me go

Well no (I guess...I wouldn't say I'm attracted to catchers). I was just pointing out more catcher for her.

great career. more then likely he will go to TV. so the posters above me will go crazy. at least Piazza is a good looking guy, and doesnt look like the troll under the bridge like fudge does.

I can see some saying that he is not, because of his catching. You know how some of those voters are. Especially if Piazza didnt get along with some of them. The writers like to hold grudges for the littlest stuff.

Granted he wasnt great, but he was good and not as bad as they always said.
