| Brewers part ways with Turnbow Former closer designated for assignment; club calls up Dillon By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com
Infielder Joe Dillon will join the Brewers on Friday in Houston, as the Brewers designated reliever Derrick Turnbow for assignment.
Dillon packed his bags after Triple-A Nashville's 5-1 loss to Colorado Springs on Thursday night, according to the Nashville Tennessean. He started the season on the Brewers' roster and went 4-for-18 in nine games, mostly off the bench, then was optioned to Nashville when pitcher Yovani Gallardo returned from the disabled list.
The Brewers had been playing with a short bench since Dillon departed. They had 13 pitchers on the active roster, including Turnbow, who had struggled in his two appearances since notching a save last week against the Phillies.
The Brewers had to make a roster move to make space for Dillon to have him available for the opener of a three-game series against the Astros. They elected to designate Turnbow for assignment, giving the team 10 days to trade him (unlikely, given Turnbow's $3.2 million salary), release him or assign him to the Minors. Turnbow has the right to refuse such an assignment, though he would forfeit his remaining salary. Turnbow recorded 63 saves as the Brewers' closer from 2005-06. | |
