I'm going to get the last of Hitchock's 1960s films out of the way. Marnie, The Birds. and Topaz were all bad. Psycho was outstanding. Let's see how this is.

Movie over. This was miles ahead of Topaz. This is actually a watchable film.

The plot here is pretty interesting. This, like Topaz is a Cold War-era spy thriller. This film came out three years earlier. By the time Hitchcock got around to making another Cold War spy film he had already done pretty much all he could do with this film leaving just a disaster.

Anyways, this film stars Paul Newman and Julie Andrews. They do a pretty good job acting although this isn't a highlight of either one of their careers.

There's enough plot twists and complexity in this to force the viewer to pay attention and think a little and it has enough redeeming qualities to permit a second viewing.

While this is nowhere near Hitchcock at his best, it is still a solid effort.

UP NEXT: Humphrey Bogart makes his big screen debut in The Petrified Forest.
