Leyland: Inge in CF, Renteria to leadoff on Opening Day

VIERA, Fla. - In Curtis Granderson’s absence, Edgar Renteria will bat leadoff, at least against right-handers, and Brandon Inge will start in center, at least on Opening Day.


Manager Jim Leyland gave those details in his press conference before this afternoon’s Tigers game with the host Washington Nationals.

Leyland didn’t commit to Inge as the center fielder for the entire length of Granderson’s absence. Granderson, the leadoff hitter and centerfielder, is expected to miss at least two weeks of the regular season because of a broken finger he sustained Saturday.

Leyland reiterated that Ivan Rodriguez is a strong possibility to hit leadoff against left-handers.

Leyland said that Inge could continue to serve as the No. 2 catcher to Rodriguez even if he is the everyday centerfielder in Granderson’s absence.

But Leyland said he didn’t know who would play center in Granderson’s place in any game that Inge catches.

My bro-in-law was giving me a hard time because I am so excited to be going. He said that it is the worst game to go to: cold, crowded, etc. I just looked at him and said, "It is OPENING DAY! And I don't care what the weather will be like or how many people will be there, it's my first OPENING DAY!"

Rain for Opening Day!

Calm down GS, it could change. You know how they change it every 5 minutes. I HOPE!!!

But every weather website is predicting rain!

And Accuweather is predicting a big rain storm across the region on Monday

Still looking for a positive forecast! Best scenario is that the rain holds off until Monday Evening!

Well, that one sounds ok then, lol, Monday night is better than afternoon.

maybe we'd best think of April 1 as Opening Day!

I still think that is why we had a game scheduled, a day off, then two more games with KC. It was an easy way of taking care of bad weather this early in the season.

It sure is, a lot of teams are complainng about this year's schedule. The Houston Astros owner wanted to know why they are on the road to San Fran (which has nice weather year round) to open the season, they would rather go there later when it is hotter in Houston. Then they continue on onto a series in Chicago. They felt the Astros-Chicago series should be reversed due to the iffy weather in Chicago this early in April. They play Chi. at home May 19-21 when the weather would be better in Chicago. Go figure.
