| Singled out: TYIB unveils new nomineesVoting under way for Single-Game Performance of the Year By Tim Ott / MLB.com In case you've been glued to the stellar action going on in the postseason, balloting for the 2007 This Year in Baseball Awards is under way. The sixth annual TYIB Awards give fans the chance to weigh in on the best of the best from the field of play this past season. Every few days, online balloting for a new category with 10 nominees is unlocked and opened for business. Last Wednesday, fans had the opportunity to begin voting for the Starting Pitcher of the Year from a field that includes Boston's Josh Beckett, San Diego's Jake Peavy and Cleveland's one-two punch of C.C. Sabathia and Fausto Carmona. Now the ballot boxes are open for category No. 2: Single-Game Performance of the Year. These are the games that had us watching the highlight reels over and over, or staring at the box scores in amazement. From three no-hitters to a couple of record-setting offensive games, the 10 performances up for consideration are each worthy of recognition. It makes for a tough decision, but hey -- that's one reason why you can vote as many times as you want. Here's a look at the nominees for Single-Game Performance of the Year: Garret Anderson, LF, Los Angeles Angels: - Spoiler:
The veteran outfielder was a one-man wrecking crew against the Yankees on Aug. 21, driving home 10 runs on two homers and a pair of doubles. His 10 RBIs set a franchise mark and left him one shy of the 71-year-old American League record set by Hall of Famer Tony Lazzeri. Erik Bedard, SP, Baltimore Orioles: - Spoiler:
Bedard cemented his status as an ace in this performance on July 7, tying a club-record with 15 strikeouts in his two-hit, complete-game shutout of the Rangers. The southpaw retired 19 consecutive hitters at one point and faced the minimum 27 batters
. Clay Buchholz, SP, Boston Red Sox: - Spoiler:
Making just his second Major League start, Buchholz showed he was more than ready for the big time with a no-hitter against the Orioles on Sept. 1. The 23-year-old threw an impressive 73 of 115 pitches for strikes and rang up nine Ks.
Mark Buehrle, SP, Chicago White Sox: - Spoiler:
Buehrle notched the AL's first no-hitter in five years on April 18, when he mowed down the Rangers in his third start of the season. The crafty lefty allowed just one walk and struck out eight to complete his masterpiece. Chone Figgins, 3B, Los Angeles Angels: - Spoiler:
Figgins was simply unstoppable against the Astros on June 18, tying an AL record by going 6-for-6 in a nine-inning game. His final hit -- a triple -- brought home the winning run to complete the Angels' comeback from a five-run deficit.
Willie Harris, LF, Atlanta Braves: - Spoiler:
Harris thrilled his hometown fans on July 21 by going 6-for-6 with two triples and four runs to lead Atlanta over St. Louis. Harris drove in six runs out of the leadoff spot and rounded out his career night with a stolen base. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C, Texas Rangers: - Spoiler:
Demonstrating the skills of a future All-Star, Saltalamacchia erupted for a 4-for-6, two-homer game in front of the hometown fans on Aug. 22. His seven RBIs and five runs scored sparked Texas to a record 30-3 blowout win over the Orioles.
Johan Santana, SP, Minnesota Twins: - Spoiler:
The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner turned in the best game of his distinguished career on Aug. 19, holding the Rangers to two hits, walking none and striking out a franchise-record 17 batters over eight shutout innings for the win.
J.R. Towles, C, Houston Astros: - Spoiler:
Playing in just his sixth Major League game, Towles delivered the performance of a lifetime on Sept. 20. The rookie catcher went 4-for-4 with a homer and two doubles while setting a franchise record with eight RBIs. Justin Verlander, SP, Detroit Tigers: - Spoiler:
Verlander's filthy arsenal was at its overpowering best on June 12, when he racked up 12 strikeouts en route to a no-hitter . The Brewers, who featured the National League's top two home run hitters at the time in Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy, got only three balls out of the infield.
On Thursday, fans will get the chance to cast their ballots for the next category: Manager of the Year. Voting runs through Wednesday, Dec. 5, and winners will be announced the following week in a live broadcast on MLB.com. So celebrate the season's best by taking part in the 2007 This Year in Baseball Awards, and let your voice be heard by honoring the best players and moments from another banner campaign. | |
