Tigers fall, but Rogers and Inge are impressive

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Tigers were held to four hits Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians, their first defeat of the spring.

Their record now is 3-1-1.

Kenny Rogers made his first start, pitching two scoreless innings. However, the Indians scored two in the fourth off Matt Mantei, then added another in the bottom of the eighth off Jason Grilli.

The Tigers scored with two outs in the ninth on a bases-loaded walk to outfielder Matt Joyce, who played at Double-A Erie last year, but that's as far as their rally went.

Brandon Inge started for the first time at catcher. Not ever having seen Inge catch a game, Leyland said his expectations were, "to see what I've said all along, that he's one of the best athletes in the league, a guy who can do anything."

Leyland has not changed his mind about trading Inge, however.

"I still hope we trade him," he said before the game. "If he can play third base for someone every day, I hope we trade him. If he can't, I hope we don't. That pretty much sums it up.

"It's not best for us, to be honest with you. But it's best for him. This guy is a good player. He's swinging better than I've ever seen him."

Inge went 0-for-2 in the loss to the Indians, but it's clear he's changed his approach.

"I just think he figured things out over the winter time," Leyland said. "He did some soul-searching and thought 'this isn't working. I'm striking out too often and I need to do something about it,' which he has.

"He's working on hitting the ball the other way a lot more. He did it before because people told him to. Now he's doing it because he knows that's what he has to do. He knows now that's the only way it's going to work."

Gary Sheffield made his first start of the spring at DH, but went 0-for-3.

17 straight batters without a hit, then our 3rd stringers started hitting. Worth got a non triple! It was a triple, until they noticed he MISSED SECOND BASE! That made it a single instead.... Hope the coaches explain what the white bases are for!

I tried to hang myself but the rope broke! I sued the company and got enough money to where I don't want to hang myself.
