| http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071004&content_id=2250980&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Vote for Clutch Performer of the Year Howard, Putz, Peavy, Ramirez, A-Rod, Teixeira in running By Mark Newman / MLB.com - Spoiler:
Ryan Howard, J.J. Putz, Jake Peavy, Aramis Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira are the nominees for the Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year Award presented by Pepsi.
Voting is under way at MLB.com, and the winner is officially the most clutch player of 2007, according to fans.
Balloting runs through Oct. 18, and the winner will be announced during the MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Award Show on ESPN at 7 p.m. ET on Oct. 24. Fans who vote can win a trip for two to the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.
This award is the culmination of a season-long campaign in which fans voted for six different Clutch Performer of the Month Award winners. Those players were: Rodriguez of the Yankees for April, Ken Griffey Jr. of the Reds for May, Chone Figgins of the Angels for June, Ramirez of the Cubs for July, Andy Pettitte of the Yankees for August, and Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs for September.
The nominees each month were selected by a special MLB.com editorial panel, and that is again the case for the season award. No matter who won the monthly awards, this vote is based on a 162-game schedule (or 163 for Peavy, whose Padres lost a one-game Wild Card playoff to Colorado).
Here is a closer look at the nominees: Howard: - Spoiler:
Despite a slow start, the Phillies first baseman put up huge numbers again in following up on his 58-homer season from 2006. Howard finished with 47 homers, and that included 11 during the Phils' crucial September stretch run and one in each of their dramatic final four games of the regular season. Putz: - Spoiler:
On July 25, the Mariners closer finally blew a save -- his first in 30 opportunities this season, ending his franchise record at 31 conversions in a row. He only blew one after that, converting 40 of 42 chances all season. Throw in a nasty 0.70 WHIP and 1.38 ERA and anyone can see why he became a marquee attraction at Safeco Field this summer. Peavy: - Spoiler:
The Padres could have used one more of those clutch Peavy performances in the tiebreaker loss at Colorado, but on the whole, it was an extraordinary season for the right-hander. The National League Cy Young Award front-runner won the pitching Triple Crown, leading the league in wins (19), ERA (2.54) and strikeouts (240). The latter two led the Majors. Most notably, Peavy was a clutch stopper when San Diego needed him, coming within a 13th-inning play at the plate of returning to the postseason. Ramirez: - Spoiler:
It was Sept. 22, and Ramirez had just homered for the third time in the last two games. The Cubs had hit four homers for the second day in a row. Ramirez was one of the key forces who really put the National League Central race to bed at that point, the Cubs needing only to hold off Milwaukee the rest of the way. The Cubs third baseman finished with 26 homers (including eight of the team's franchise-record 45 in September), 101 RBIs and a .310 average. Rodriguez: - Spoiler:
Everyone had run out of superlatives about a week into September. A-Rod all but wrapped up the American League MVP award by then, and he led the Yankees back from a midseason abyss to their 13th consecutive postseason, this time as the Wild Card. Rodriguez finished with a Major League-leading 54 homers and 156 RBIs, the latter a career high, to go with a .314 record. It's difficult to imagine the Yanks reaching the postseason without him. Teixeira: - Spoiler:
Braves fans can't wait to see what he might do with a full season in Atlanta. Teixeira played 78 games for Texas and hit 13 homers with 49 RBIs, and after the trade to Atlanta he had an immediate impact and gave the Braves 17 homers and 56 RBIs in 54 games. Teixeira homered and drove in four runs to draw a curtain call on Aug. 1 in his Atlanta debut, and he homered in each of his first three games for the team.
- Spoiler:
Fans can also vote with their mobile phone by sending a text message to PEPSI to 99778.
There is always plenty of debate about what constitutes the meaning of "clutch." It is whatever criteria you choose, but ultimately this applies to the player whose teammates count on him when it matters the most. There are 750 players on Major League rosters for most of the season, so obviously providing only six names here also will generate some debate. But that's the list, a half-dozen clutch performers, and your job is to decide on one.

| Who the came up with this list? Ryan Howard: - Spoiler:
Set the all-time single season RECORD for strikeouts with 199. Is that clutch?
J.J. Putz: - Spoiler:
So he had a great season...big deal! Closers are so overrated it's not even funny. He got 40-42 which is good but even a terrible closer probably would have saved 37 of those. According to ESPN's "Cy Predictor" (a formula which determines who deserves the Cy Young) Joe Borowski is in the top 10 with an ERA OVER 5! The day a guy with a 5+ ERA wins the Cy Young (especially as a reliever) is the day I lose what little respect I have for the BBWAA.
Aramis Ramirez: - Spoiler:
He was one of the better players on his team, but he's nowhere near the best player in the NL this year. I can name 10 players that had better seasons AND didn't make this list:
- Matt Holliday
- David Wright
- Prince Fielder
- Hanley Ramirez
- Jimmy Rollins
- Miguel Cabrera
- Albert Pujols
- Larry Jones (not calling him Chipper!)
- Chase Utley
- Todd Helton
See!
Mark Teixeira: - Spoiler:
So he wasn't bad for 78 games with the Braves. Big deal! The season is 162 games long. If you want to give him an award for playing 78 games, give Bonds the MVP! At for at bat, Bonds created more runs than anyone last year.
Jake Peavy and Alex Rodriguez - Spoiler:
What can I say... Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.

| A-Rod named baseball's most clutch Yankees slugger claims inaugural award presented by Pepsi By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- The Yankees' year might have been an early loss if not for Alex Rodriguez's heroics. Time and time again, he came through with success in tight situations, helping to lead the club into the postseason. For his efforts in what will be remembered as a remarkable individual season worthy of praise, Rodriguez has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the 2007 Major League Baseball Clutch Performer of the Year, presented by Pepsi.
The officially sanctioned Major League Baseball award recognizes the player who performed his best when the game was on the line, and was revealed during a one-hour special, produced by Major League Baseball Productions, on ESPN on Wednesday.
Off to a disappointing 21-29 start despite Rodriguez's exceptional opening act, the Yankees had a large hole to dig out of if they wanted to keep their streak of 13 consecutive postseason appearances intact.
The 32-year-old Rodriguez had a major hand in helping them do so, leading all of baseball with 143 runs scored, 54 home runs, 156 RBIs, and a .645 slugging percentage.
"It's a year I'm proud of, just because the guys battled hard all year," Rodriguez said recently. "It's been the toughest year trying to get to the postseason, that's for sure. Many people kind of doubted us, and it's weird for us to be able to overcome such adversity. Personally, I feel good about the year."
No batter in the Major Leagues hit more home runs to tie the game or put his team ahead, situations in which Rodriguez went deep 22 times. Philadelphia's Ryan Howard and Houston's Lance Berkman tied Rodriguez in that category.
Rodriguez's success in the late innings certainly helped his case, showing a great improvement over his performances in 2006. Rodriguez batted .463 (19-for-41) with eight home runs and 21 RBIs in the ninth innings of games this year, compared with .143 (5-for-35) with three home runs and five RBIs last season.
"I realized that I'm going to let my baseball do the talking," Rodriguez said.
One of Rodriguez's most memorable moments -- and a tell-tale sign that this year had earmarks of being different for him -- came April 7, during the Yankees' first homestand, as A-Rod stepped in against Baltimore reliever Chris Ray.
Having already hit a two-run homer earlier in the game, Rodriguez belted an offering into the black beyond center field for a game-winning, walk-off grand slam, lifting the Yankees to a 10-7 victory and playing out a stretch in which he hit six home runs and collected 15 RBIs in the first seven games of the season.
"It felt awesome," Rodriguez said then. "I was so excited, I felt like a fool running around the bases, like it was Little League. I just remember I almost knocked [coach Larry] Bowa over at third. I saw the fans rocking behind him. That was kind of cool.
"You relish it. As an athlete, you always want to be in that opportunity."
One of Rodriguez's most dramatic moments also came in the game's most heated rivalry, where he has had trouble in recent years. With the Yankees down to their final strike of the ninth inning June 3 at Boston, Rodriguez turned on a 95 mph Jonathan Papelbon fastball and drilled it high through the raindrops into the Fenway Park night, helping the Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Red Sox and two out of three games at Boston.
"I was just trying to not to do too much," Rodriguez said then. "With two strikes, that's the last thing you're trying to do, to hit a home run. It's always a tough at-bat [against Papelbon]. He has so many ways of getting you out. The guy's a great competitor. Just to be able to win that game and then have Mo [Mariano Rivera] close the door was great."
With the Yankees driving toward a Wild Card spot and an eventual Division Series matchup with the Cleveland Indians, Rodriguez found another gear. He drove in 111 runs in his final 105 games of the season, averaging one RBI every 3.7 at-bats over the course of the whole campaign -- leading the big leagues with that ratio.
"I think this whole year was just an amazing thing that he did," outfielder Johnny Damon said. "He came in and showed everyone why he is the best player in the game."
When the Yankees needed a boost at home during the regular season, too, Rodriguez was there often. With 26 home runs in the Bronx, Rodriguez equaled his own single-season record -- set during his 2005 AL MVP campaign -- for homers hit by a right-handed batter at Yankee Stadium.
"Definitely, he helped us a lot," second baseman Robinson Cano said. "He helped so much, I can't tell you about it, especially when we were struggling in the beginning. He got those walk-off home runs and those comeback games. That's something that you've got to appreciate looking at them now."
The 2007 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year Presented by Pepsi winner was selected by the fans from a list of six nominees chosen by a special editorial panel from MLB Advanced Media and Major League Baseball Productions. From Oct. 5 through Oct. 19, Major League Baseball fans voted for the award on pepsiclutch.mlb.com, a site powered by MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, and created specifically for the MLB Clutch Performer Platform.
To further engage fans in the selection process, Pepsi introduced an online sweepstakes in conjunction with the award. As part of the program, Pepsi, the official soft drink of Major League Baseball, fans were entered to win a trip to the 2008 All-Star Game by voting for the 2007 MLB Clutch Performer of the Year.
Previous monthly winners of the MLB Pepsi Clutch Performer of the Month awards include: Rodriguez (April); Ken Griffey Jr. (May); Chone Figgins (June); Aramis Ramirez (July); Andy Pettitte (August); and Alfonso Soriano (September). | |
