Opening Day Batting Order:

1. CF Curtis Granderson
2. 2B Placido Polanco
3. DH Gary Sheffield
4. SS Carlos Guillen
5. RF Magglio Ordonez
6. C Ivan Rodriguez
7. 1B Sean Casey
8. LF Craig Monroe
9. 3B Brandon Inge

Somewhat of a surprise to see Carlos as the cleanup hitter, but this looks like one of the best possible batting orders that one could have come up with.

Career numbers vs. Blue Jay starter Roy Halladay:

1.Granderson 0-0
2.Polanco 0-0
3.Sheffield 2-9
4.Guillen 1-12
5.Ordonez 2-17
6.Rodriguez 10-18
7.Casey 1-4
8.Monroe 4-17
9.Inge 1-13
Total 21-90 .233 AVG

======================

Blue Jays Vs. Bonderman Career Stats:

1. LF Reed Johnson 2-8
2. 1B Lyle Overbay 0-6
3. CF Vernon Wells 5-12
4. DH Frank Thomas 1-9
5. 3B Troy Glaus 1-6
6. RF Alex Rios 1-6
7. C Gregg Zaun 0-6
8. 2B Aaron Hill 1-6
9. SS Royce Clayton 1-5
Totals 12-64 .187 AVG.

Okay, so Guillen is not batting cleanup, but 5th with Maggs in the cleanup position. I guess you can't trust the information where I found the lineup on the Tigers own website.

Gotta give credit to Wells and Overbay - those were good pitches and they adjusted well. I think my grandma could have run faster than Monroe did to that last popup. Should be 2-0.

So far, the Tigers look like little league players against the Jays. The Jays look ready to play and already have stolen 2 bases. Unbelievable. C;m Tigers, wake up and get goin.

Bonderman has a history of coming out the gate slow - thats not overreacting thats telling it like it is. We went through this same schtik with him last year.

Perhaps you should realize where his comments are coming from before you decide to bash him a over-reacting.

2006:
...............................................................,,......Innings.........................Earned Runs.....................ERA
2006 Pitches 1-15:...........................................27.0.................................27................................9.00
2006 Pitches 16-30:.........................................33.0.................................14................................3.82
2005 Pitches 1-15:...........................................21.0.................................12................................4.81
2005 Pitches 16-30:.........................................27.1.................................25................................8.23
2004 Pitches 1-15:...........................................26.1.................................17................................5.81
2004 Pitches 16-30:.........................................29.2.................................18................................5.46

Three Year totals (first 30 pitches)................164.1................................113..............................6.19
Three Year totals (remaining pitches)............422.2................................183..............................3.83

He digs himself (and his team) unnecessary holes too often.

so this comment:

"The only thing keeping this kid from blossoming from merely a good pitcher (and he is a good pitcher) to a great one is his own mental state."

isn't overreacting?

let's see, bondo recovers his "mental state" drops 10 straight right after that and that's not adjusting like a potential great pitcher should?

it was the second inning. at least wait til he's out of the game before making a judgement as to how he adjusts and what type of pitcher he is.

and really, who cares what he does in the first two innings of a game? if he adjusts and comes out on top in the end, does it really matter?

Nice bit of robbery by Monroe on that ball.

No other team has been so bold as to steal bases and succeed like Toronto. It's something the Tigers and Pudge will need to be mindful of against other teams who have any speed at all. Toronto also is a powerful hitting team, which is a good test for our pitchers. Bondo seems to have settled in the the Tigers look like they are locked in. This sure isn't spring training anymore.

Bondo is pitching like bondo... rough 1st inning and then a good game.

=========================

* tiger3boy
* Posts:3217

Most of the great pitchers had exactly the same knock on them. How often have you heard an announcer make the comment that "if you don't get to this guy early, it is going to be a long day."?

I am sure they have experimented with the timing of his warmup to see if they can find a secret to beating his first inning blues.

Bonderman may start shaky, but he does settle down...
he seems to be doing that

=========================

* fraquar
* Posts:6615

Something isn't right when Bondo comes out to start a game - and it isn't mechanics. He has a trend of getting rocked early, and then settleing down. that is MENTAL APPROACH, not machanics.

Thats an approach some of us have been hoping he's finally figured out - and at least on Opening Day it's more of the Bondo of old.

Yes, look at the numbers I posted - his early inning problems HAVE kept him from becoming an elite level pitcher and as long as his line in the first two innings continues the way it has he will NEVER become an elite level pitcher.

how about this. let's see what he does in his first 3 outings of the season, then judge about his "mental state."

it's the first game of the year. relax. monroe was having a tea party on that fly ball, and pudge was thinking about something else when he missed that possible double up. they're a little jittery today. making judgement on how much a player or a team has "matured" or "not matured" is a bit "premature" when there's 161 games left to play this year.

Not to worry, fraq. Wokenfuss is the board chief basher. Hair growing down his back aa well as his ears and nose!

Oh, the patience you must have taken to put all those stats in rows and columns--only to see them obliterated by mlb e-mail technology that, despite cold fusion and all other macromedia flash techniques cannot seem to give bloggers anything near MS Word's ability to do such stuff. I did a stat spread like yours a while back trying to compare Shelton and Thames on first base and hitting stats, but it came out just like yours. The only thing I can figure out is that there are "54" characters "across" a line, so you want to put your "short" axis item or items on the horizontal line and your long list of stat items down the vertical axis if your stat line items contain more than 54 characters. Don't know if that makes any sense, but just try reversing the axes on which you're typing stuff and see if that works on another post..

Same story - different year - lets wait and see in regards to Bondo, or "this is the year he breaks out".

He needs to start bucking the trend - this is his 5th year in MLB. By the way, it will take more than 3 outings to deem Bondo has indeed "bucked the trend" (it's taken him 4 years to establish this trend afterall) and until then he's a guy who puts his team in too many holes to start games - and people will react accordingly the next time it happens (Opening Day or no Opening Day).

Who am I to complain but I am SICK of the way Monroe swings the bat. It just T's me off whether he led the team in HR's last year or not. How many times does his right hand fly off the bat; what are you going to do swinging with one hand (and don't tell me the follow through doesn't matter). If he has to take his hand off he's reaching - meaning swinging at balls. Or he's swinging too hard. If he didn't have better defense than Thames I'd say trade him now let Thames play LF for the season and bring up Maybin next year. There he goes again... 0-4 4K's all on one handed swings.

Maybin may get brought up this year - depending on the right circumstance. A few more of those days and that circumstance may be sooner rather than later.

I don't know what to say about Rodney. He's got good stuff. He had good stuff in today's game. But it's all mental with him. As soon as he would get two strikes on the hitter, he would try to overthrow instead of relying on his stuff. Last year he did this numerous times. You would think he'd finally catch on. But he just keeps on overthrowing or trying to do something that he's not really capable of doing.

Couple of good catches. Too bad he hits like Illitch. The only hitter on this team is Polanco. Guillen gets the big pay day and goes to lunch during the game with a big fat 0.000 performance. 0-162 is possible.

Rodney is a bizarre case. One of the best changeups in baseball yet no "out" pitch. That one pitch to Thomas looked like strike 3 and when called a ball seemed to really fluster him (no excuse!). I cannot WAIT to see Monroe gone, Grandy in left and Maybin in center. Next year hopefully sooner. People have high ideas about Monroe; to me that spells out perfect candidate as trade bait.

And for whomever said that without Monroe's Defense in there robbing that HR it woulda been 5-3 game (not taking anything away from that play it was great) but his lacksidasical trot in the first inning that plated their 3rd run was by far a catchable ball. Goes both ways.

Other game notes: Sheffield, welcome to the team, nice productive AB's. Granderson looked great except that last AB. Rodney had an amazing defensive play (where was that in the world series?!!!). Pudge seemed.. well best way to put it "unprepared" missed the DP and 2 stolen bases off the bat. I thought Bondo pitched well despite what others on here are saying. He didn't get some of the calls that Halladay got.

From this vantage, even though it was a loss, looks like they could have a Great year.

Good game Tigers fans, you guys got some kinda powerful lineup there.

Good luck in the next two games. Hopefully there won't be too much snow :S

Yea, the first couple innings, the Jays were all over us. Actually, the game was pretty good but would have been more enjoyable with a win. This year may start out a little slower than last year, but I think we'll get stronger.

Ha! Already people want to trade this one, get rid of that one, so and so can't hiit. The flag raising event was emotional and you could see how much it meant to the players. It's hard to go 10 innings and lose, but hopefully, our Tigers will get the kinks out. Last year, I thought we'd win it all. The youngsters have no idea how hard it is to make it to a world series. Still, the Tigers played well against a very, very good pitcher, and a great offensive team.

I was hoping Bonderman would learn how to warm up this year. But he's still using the first inning to test his stuff.

C-Moe caught some nice balls, let another drop at his feet, and overall su.cked at the plate.

Fernando needs to be on a short leash and shouldn't pitch with the game on the line.

Blah, not a good performance.

Not an awful game. They fought back but came up short. Really the only reason they lost is because of the walks.

Well,we can't tell alot from one day, but we know one thing for sure. We will not be matching our great '84 team who were in 1st place from the first game through the last. I don't know if those who went, enjoyed it. I never enjoyed being at a game we lost.

Well, besides some old bats tuning in, the bats DID get going. Sheffield and Polanco did pretty good, especially Sheffield. I mean, going into this game, he had 1,501 RBIs. On the opening day of his first season with us, he now has 1,503. Sounds good when one bat can knock in two thirds of our run total! But, I know what you mean about the rest of the lineup. Hopefully, they're just warming up. Like my wise father used to say to me, "Hold on to your gotchhas!" (Not sure about the spelling, and don't ask me what gotchhas are. He was a "clean" speakin' man, so it couldn't have been anything bad!) Wink Ciao!

I guess I enjoy the lost games before I know they're lost and then I'm upset enough that that outweighs the enjoyment I had. As far as being a jinx, in '84 we had won the first 8; I went to game 9 and we lost. Then we won 9 (I think ---but a bunch in a row) and I went to the next one and we lost. So out of almost the first 20, we had lost only 2 and those were the 2 I went to. I never went again that season.

If I were to move for that reason, NY is where I'd go for sure. I want them to lose every bit as much as I want us to win. I never say "Yankees " on a post without saying, "hated Yankees."

We need to have a contest on here: Who hates the Yankees most! I know LOGICALLY I should want AL Central teams to lose most, but EMOTIONALLY the hatred is too strong. Which brings up an interesting medical topic. Did you know the latest psychiatric position that explains so much about human behavior is that the brain's frontal lobes that do our reasoning are too new and small to overcome the far more ancient parts where emotion rules and survival is paramount. That's why it's so often hard for us to control anger or do other things when the frontal lobes are saying it's not good for us. They are not loud or strong enough to overcome the limbic system.

Whether or not I go to Atlanta depends where we are in the standings. I need to be able to hold my head up!

I used to feel like that about the educational system. I think it's still that way for people who want to go into trades. But so often in my life it has been so notable how people with college educations know something about everything. And it's impressive. Probably the logic behind it is that you young people in college today are the ones we expect to solve tomorrow's problems, so your knowledge can't be limited. An example that comes to mind is West Point. Think what a disaster if they only taught the skills of warfare, without history, sociology, philosophy, etc. The generals would then not have the background to ever make good decisions about WHETHER or not to wage wars to use their learned military skills.

I think psychology is becoming a thing of the past, as the scientists now know that all mental disorders are neuro-chemical imbalances and abnormalities of the brain's biology. That's why medication is surpassing "talk" therapy now.

I have never had any interest in any other sport than Baseball. I don't think of Baseball as just a sport like all the rest. It is in a special class by itself, elevated. It alone has class and grace and elegance and beauty. Imagine someone saying that about football or hockey!

I'm sure I'm behind the times in alot of things, but how can a psychologist and a psychiatrist take the same amount of school. Isn't it true that a psychiatrist must be a doctor, but a psychologist does not need to be a doctor? I just laughed looking at the name of this thread. Long threads never resemble what they started out to be. I know Baseball will win out with you. You have too much class for that rough stuff.

I would have thought everyone knew that a psychiatrist was a medical specialist, just like a neuro-surgeon. Is it different in different states? I had a friend in Michigan who was a psychologist, but her degree was a 4 year one in social work. She was definitely not a doctor.

This psychiatrist that is being paid so handsomly by the state should be fired. I wonder how many inmates are going crazy waiting to see their doctor. I suppose inmates aren't really considered human beings to some people but some of them do require psychiatric care. Now, I can honestly use the word "lardbutt" without feeling guilty because that doctor is one.

If the Tigers need you? As a psychiatrist, a fan, a player, or all three? Well, it does sound like you will make a good psychiatrist as you are very practical and woulld not tend to get too disturbed about your disturbed patients. It seems like you have carefully thought about every aspect of choosing a profession. It will probably not be easy getting there. The rigors of being a medical resident are well documented.

My Daddy taught me to smack a baseball as soon as I could hold a bat. If I hit it, he had to chase it. If I missed it, I had to chase it. So with that kind of motivation, I learned to hit 'em ALL. I hadn't picked up a bat in decades and last summer my friend's 9 year old threw me some pitches and I whacked 'em. His comment (at my advanced age) ---- pretty good for a "girl!"

One has to put it in perspective. I mean when a Cy Young pitcher like Schilling gets hammered with 5 runs in less than 4 full innings by Kansas Ciity, and when a lights out pitcher like Contreras who is capable of pitching a no-hitter is obliterated by Clevland's lineup, giving up 7 runs in one inning, we come up looking very good. We just didn't have enough bats working--only two run-producing ones. And we';ll just have to see Bondo a couple more times to determine whether or not he is capable of complete control at the beginnings of games as well as the early-middle and middle. Keep the faith! Go Tigers! I found Bob Woojnewski's article about the opening day jitters of the guys yesterday very helpful in putting this particular game into perspective.
Check him out in detnews.com. See ya! Enjoy the game tomorrow. A win would be the best medicine for everybody's day-1 disappointment.
