Play ball! Tigers begin first official workout

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A baseball season super-fueled by World Series plans and expectations began at 9:30 a.m. this morning when Tigers manager Jim Leyland and his team's pitchers and catchers trotted into the sunshine for their first official workout of 2008.
It was a perfect day in Lakeland, with no wind and temperatures heading into the 70s, as the Tigers opened spring training at the Florida home they have known since 1934.
Every noteworthy player was on hand, including Brandon Inge, who put on shin guards and catching gear for the first time in four years. Inge, who was Detroit's starting third baseman until Miguel Cabrera was obtained in December's big trade with Florida, will be part of the back-up mix behind regular catcher Pudge Rodriguez.
Inge could supplant Vance Wilson as Leyland's second catcher if Wilson is slow to recover from last year's Tommy John surgery.
Position players will report Wednesday when the full squad begins everyday workouts ahead of the exhibition opener, Feb. 26, against Florida Southern. | |
