While we're discussing The Eagles, how about arguably their best song:
1976 - Hotel California - The Eagles
I was going to add that song, but got distracted. Thanks for adding it. Take It Easy is my favorite Eagles song.
The Eagles are a strange band. I have 7 of their songs on my iPod (that's not the record, but close) yet they don't have any songs that I think are that great. I mean, I like the 7 songs I have but all 7 of them just barely make the cut (Hotel California might be good enough to where it doesn't deserve this distinction). They don't really have any no-doubt, has to be on my iPod-type songs. CCR is fairly similar. I have 13! of their songs but probably at least 10 of them are the same thing - they're good enough, but not by a whole lot.
I mean, a song has to be pretty good to make my iPod, but not all songs on my iPod are created equal. I'll use a baseball analogy (this is a baseball message board after all). Ty Cobb and Jim Bunning are both in the Hall of Fame. While the HOF makes no distinction between the two, Ty Cobb and Jim Bunning are very different - Ty Cobb is one of the greatest HOFers while Jim Bunning is just a mediocre one.
That makes sense. I'd rather listen to CCR than the Eagles though. Both are constant in that they have a lot songs that are good to listen to, but neither have a great song. I should add some 70s CCR songs.
Yeah, they lack that great song. I was on CCRs website the other day for some reason and there was a poll asking what your favorite CCR song is. I had no idea what to vote for. I went with Who'll Stop the Rain but you could convince me to take about 8 other ones.
Back to the lack of a GREAT song, CCR had five, count 'em five #2 hits (Proud Mary/Born on the Bayou, Bad Moon Rising/Lodi, Travelin' Band/Who'll Stop the Rain, Green River/Commotion, Lookin' Out My Back Door/Long as I can See the Light) but not a single #1.
I just listed 10 songs, but they were all credited as two-sided singles. Only one of the songs is the one that actually went #2. It's pretty obvious as to which one it is in most of them.

1970 - I Heard It Though The Grapevine - CCR
Spoiler:
Oo, Bet you're wondering how I knew about your plans to make me blue With some other guy that you knew before? Between the two of us guys, you know I love you more. It took me by surprise, I must say, when I found out yesterday. Oo,
CHORUS: I heard it through the grapevine, not much longer would you be mine. Oo, I heard it through the grapevine, and I'm just about to lose my mind. Honey, honey yeah.
You know that a man ain't supposed to cry, but these tears I can't hold inside. Losin' you would end my life you see, 'cause you mean that much to me. You could have told me yourself that you found someone else. Instead,
CHORUS
People say, "Believe half of you see, son, and none of what you hear." I can't help bein' confused; if it's true, won't you tell me dear? Do you plan to let me go for the other guy that you knew before? Oo,
CHORUS
CHORUS

1977 - Slow Dancin' - Johnny Rivers
Spoiler:
It's late at night and we're all alone With just the music on the radio No one's coming, no one's gonna telephone Just me and you and the lights down low And we're
Slow dancing, swaying to the music Slow dancing, just me and my girl Slow dancing, swaying to the music No one else in the whole wide world Just you, girl
And we just flow together when the lights are low And shadows dancing across the wall The music's playing so soft and slow And the rest of the world so far away and small And we're
Slow dancing, swaying to the music Slow dancing, just me and my girl Slow dancing, swaying to the music No one else in the whole wide world Just you, girl
Hold me, hold me Don't ever let me go
As we dance together in the dark There's so much love in this heart of mine You whisper to me and I hold you tight You're the one I thought I'd never find
Slow dancing, swaying to the music Slow dancing, just me and my girl Slow dancing, swaying to the music No one else in the whole wide world Just you, girl

1970 - Spill the Wine - Eric Burton and War
Spoiler:
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
I was once out strolling one very hot summer's day When I thought I'd lay myself down to rest in a big field of tall grass I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
And I fell asleep and dreamed I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie And that I was the star of the movie This really blew my mind, the fact that me, an overfed, long-haired leaping gnome should be the star of a Hollywood movie
But there I was, I was taken to a place, the hall of the mountain kings I stood high upon a mountain top, naked to the world In front of every kind of girl, there was black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones...
Out of the middle came a lady She whispered in my ear something crazy She said:
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
[spoken:]
I thought to myself what could that mean Am I going crazy or is this just a dream Now, wait a minute I know I'm lying in a field of grass somewhere so it's all in my head and then.. I heard her say one more time:
[sung:]
Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl
[spoken:] I could feel hot flames of fire roaring at my back As she disappeared, but soon she returned In her hand was a bottle of wine, in the other, a glass She poured some of the wine from the bottle into the glass And raised it to her lips And just before she drank it, she said:
[sung:] Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl Spill the wine and take that pearl, Spill the wine and take that pearl

I like America. They aren't my favorite, but they're still good enough to put on my iPod. I think my favorite song is "Sister Golden Hair". "Ventura Highway" is probably the worst of the bunch.

1970 - Give Me Just a Little More Time - Chairman of the Board
Spoiler:
CHORUS: Give me just a little more time And our love will surely grow Give me just a little more time And our love will surely grow
1: Life's too short to make a mistake Let's think of each other and hesitate Young and impatient we may be There's no need to act foolishly If we part our hearts won't forget it Years from now we'll surely regret it
CHORUS:
2: You're young and you're in a hurry You're eager for love but don't you worry We both want the sweetness in life But these things don't come overnight Don't give up cos love's been slow Boy, we're gonna succeed with another blow
Give me just a little more time And our love will surely grow Baby please baby Baby please baby
3: Love is that mountain we must climb Let's climb it together your hand in mine We haven't known each other too long But the feeling I have is oh so strong I know we can make it there's no doubt We owe it to ourselves to find it out
Just,
CHORUS:
Give me just a little more time And our love will surely grow Baby, please baby Baby, please baby
