1967 - There's a Kind of Hush - Herman's Hermits
Spoiler:
There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight All over the world you can hear the sounds of lovers in love You know what I mean Just the two of us and nobody else in sight There's nobody else and I'm feeling good just holding you tight
So listen very carefully Closer now and you will see what I mean It isn't a dream The only sound that you will hear Is when I whisper in your ear I love you forever and ever
There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight All over the world you can hear the sounds of lovers in love La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la
So listen very carefully Closer now and you will see what I mean It isn't a dream The only sound that you will hear Is when I whisper in your ear I love you forever and ever
There's a kind of hush all over the world tonight All over the world people just like us are fallin' in love Yeah, they're fallin' in love Hush, they're fallin' in love Hush

1967 - Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
Spoiler:
We skipped the light fandango Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor I was feeling kinda seasick But the crowd called out for more The room was humming harder As the ceiling flew away When we called out for another drink And the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "There is no reason And the truth is plain to see." But I wandered through my playing cards And they would not let her be One of sixteen vestal virgins Who were leaving for the coast And although my eyes were open wide They might have just as well been closed
And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, "I'm here on a shore leave," Though we were miles at sea. I pointed out this detail And forced her to agree, Saying, "You must be the mermaid Who took King Neptune for a ride." And she smiled at me so sweetly That my anger straightway died.
And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale
If music be the food of love Then laughter is it's queen And likewise if behind is in front Then dirt in truth is clean My mouth by then like cardboard Seemed to slip straight through my head So we crash-dived straightway quickly And attacked the ocean bed
And so it was that later As the miller told his tale That her face, at first just ghostly, Turned a whiter shade of pale

That's not true! There's a lot of Beatles stuff I like! I don't like their earlier stuff, but most of the stuff on the Blue and Red Albums (I think that's what they're called) is great!

And I was walking down the street one day A pretty lady looked at me and said her diamond watch had stopped cold dead And I said
Does anybody really know what time it is Does anybody really care If so I cant imagine why Weve all got time enough to cry
And I was walking down the street one day Being pushed and shoved by people trying to beat the clock, oh, no I just dont know I dont know And I said, yes I said
Background: People runnin everywhere Dont know where to go Dont know where I am Cant see past the next step Dont have time to think past the last mile Have no time to look around Just run around, run around and think why

1966 - They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-haaa!- Napoleon XIV (it was banned)
Spoiler:
Remember when you ran away and I got on my knees and begged you not to leave because I'd go berserk?? Well... You left me anyhow and then the days got worse and worse and now you see I've gone completely out of my mind.. And..
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!! They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa To the funny farm. Where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!!!
You thought it was a joke and so you laughed, you laughed when I had said that loosing you would make me flip my lid.. RIGHT??? I know you laughed, I heard you laugh, you laughed you laughed and laughed and then you left, but now you know I'm utterly mad... And..
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa, They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa. To the happy home. With trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!!
I cooked your food, I cleaned your house, and this is how you pay me back for all my kind unselfish loving deeds.. Huh?? Well you just wait, they'll find you yet and when they do they'll put you in the ASPCA, you mangy mutt!!! And...
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa. They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa. To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time and I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats and they're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!!! To the happy home, with trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes and they're coming to take me away, ha-haa!!! To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time... (fade out)
I think I remember reading that it was banned because of the siren noises and people confusing them with real sirens.

More information on that song (from wikipedia):
Spoiler:
Released on Warner Bros. Records, the bizarre depiction of mental illness became an instant hit in the United States that summer, reaching number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart.
However, it was highly controversial at the time. Some groups protested the apparent mockery of mental illness, while other groups attacked the apparent comparison of Napoleon's wife to a "mangy mutt". The protesters put pressure both on radio stations directly and on the stations' advertisers. This was especially felt in New York City, where Top 40 stalwarts WABC and WMCA soon dropped the record from airplay and skipped it during their countdown shows, much to the confusion of the young teens who made up a large part of those broadcasters' audience. The record was soon banned from airplay at radio stations in a number of other markets as well. As a result, it quickly sank back down the charts, spending a total only five weeks in the Billboard Top 40.
The record was also a success in United Kingdom, reaching number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.
Spoiler:
Furthering the theme of insanity, the flip or B-side of the single was called "!aaaH-aH yawA eM ekaT oT gnimoC er'yehT" and the singer billed as "VIX noelopaN". It was the A-side played in reverse; in fact, most of the label affixed to that B-side was printed backward, including the letters in the "WB" shield logo. Only the label name, disclaimer, and record & song master numbers were kept frontward. The backwards version does not appear on the original Warner Bros. album, although the title is shown on the front cover.

Only the label name, disclaimer, and record & song master numbers were kept frontward. The backwards version does not appear on the original Warner Bros. album, although the title is shown on the front cover.
That's some interesting stuff! Although I already knew about the flip side.

1964 - Mountain of Love - Johnny Rivers
EDIT: Video replaced due to availibility...
Spoiler:
Standin' on a mountain lookin' down on a city The way I feel is a doggone pity Teardrops fallin' down the mountain side Many times I've been here, many times I've cried We used to be so happy when we were in love High on a mountain of love
Mountain of love, the mountain of love You should be ashamed You used to be a mountain of love But you just changed your name
Way down below there's a half a million people Somewhere there's a church with a big tall steeple Inside the church, there's an altar filled with flowers Wedding bells are ringin' and they should've been ours That's why I'm so lonely, my dream is gone above High on a mountain of love
Night after night I'm a-standin' here alone Weepin' out my heart 'til the cold grey dawn Prayin' that you're lonely and you'll come here too Hopin' just by chance that I'll get a glimpse of you Trying hard to find you somewhere up above High on a mountain of love

1966 - Secret Agent Man - Johnny Rivers
Spoiler:
There's a man who leads a life of danger To everyone he meets he stays a stranger With every move he makes another chance he takes Odds are he won't live to see tomorrow
Secret agent man, secret agent man They've given you a number and taken away your name

How can you tell me how much you miss me When the last time I saw you, you wouldn't even kiss me That rich guy you've been seein' Must have put you down So welcome back baby To the poor side of town
To him you were nothin' but a little plaything Not much more than an overnight fling To me you were the greatest thing this boy had ever found And girl it's hard to find nice things On the poor side of town
I can't blame you for tryin' I'm tryin' to make it too I've got one little hang up baby I just can't make it without you
So tell me, are you gonna stay now Will you stand by me girl all the way now With you by my side They can't keep us down Together we can make it baby From the poor side of town
(So tell me how much you love me) (Come be near to me and say you need me now)
Oh, with you by my side This world can't keep us down Together we can make it baby From the poor side of town

For those that were in the 1970s thread and were told to go here for some CSN, look no further! Here's the song:
1969 - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - Crosby, Stills, and Nash
One note in case you missed it: CSN is the same thing as CSNY but there's no Neil Young.

1965 - Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds
Spoiler:
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.
Take me for a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship, All My senses have been stripped, And my hands can't feel to grip, And My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade Unto my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, I'm not sleepy and there ain't' no place I'm going to. Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me, In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Keeping with that theme, here's a song:
1965 - Mr. Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan
Rolling Stone Magazine says Dylan's version is the 106th greatest song of all-time while the Byrd's version is the 79th best. Dylan wrote the song.

1965 - Turn Turn Turn - The Byrds
wiki wrote:
The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the King James version of the Bible (Ecclesiastes 3, verses 1–8 ). The Biblical text posits there being a time and place for all things: laughter and sorrow, healing and killing, war and peace, and so on. The lines are open to myriad interpretations, but as a song they are commonly performed as a plea for world peace, with stress on the closing line: "a time for peace, I swear it's not too late," the latter phrase being the only part of the lyric written by Seeger himself.
Spoiler:
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven
A time to be born, a time to die A time to plant, a time to reap A time to kill, a time to heal A time to laugh, a time to weep
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven
A time to build up,a time to break down A time to dance, a time to mourn A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven
A time of love, a time of hate A time of war, a time of peace A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing
To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn) And a time for every purpose, under heaven
A time to gain, a time to lose A time to rend, a time to sew A time to love, a time to hate A time for peace, I swear its not too late
