MIAMI -- Omar Vizquel made history Sunday, overtaking Luis Aparicio as baseball's shortstop iron man.

In the second game of a doubleheader at Dolphin Stadium, the 41-year-old shortstop played in his 2,584th game, passing Aparicio for most games appeared in as a shortstop.

That's a lot of games for a 5-foot-8, 175-pound guy playing one of the most demanding positions ...

General partner Neukom will take over as managing partner

By Chris Haft / MLB.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Since their inception in 1883, the Giants have had only nine principal owners. Such stability suggests that each owner treated the franchise like an heirloom, something to be preserved and passed carefully to each successor.

This certainly appeared to be the case Friday, when Giants president and managing general partner Peter Magowan announced that he ...

Looks like the Marlins have themselves a new third baseman. Jorge Cantu is the guy after the Marlins placed Jose Castillo on waivers and didn't pull him back when the Giants claimed him.

As recently as a week ago I think the Marlins were giving serious thought to carrying both Cantu and Castillo. That changed when they determined Cantu wouldn't be a defensive liability, leaving them to decide whether Castillo or Jason Wood would be the better option off the bench.

Busy day today. The Giants put out a press release: they've signed Aaron Rowand to a five-year deal. We'll reserve judgment until we hear the amount, but this just doesn't seem logical for a team not expected to compete for at least two years.

The 30 year-old Rowand had one of his best years in '07, hitting .309/.374/.515 while playing 161 games. It's fair to say he's a plus in the field as well.

The Giants' 5th overall pick is protected, so the Phillies ...

Technically, the Giants declined their one-year, $1 million option on Walker before signing him. The Giants had every intention of keeping Walker, who went 2-0 with a 1.26 ERA in 15 relief appearances after ...
