Continuing my tour of produce people never usually eat.....

Today I tried a horned melon (AKA African Cucumber or Kiwano)

They're related to both melons and cucumbers. They taste like cucumber with a hint of melon. They're pretty bland overall. The thorns on the outside are pretty sharp. The filling is almost like someone took a peeled cucumber and ran it through a blender.

Wikipedia says these are ridiculously expensive (up to $6 a fruit). My aunt bought this one and ...

Who knew there was so much fancy fruit out there?

We bought some blood oranges today. On the outside they look perfectly normal, just a little small:

Once you peel it, it looks way different than a typical orange:

As for the taste, they taste similar to oranges, but vastly superior. They're somewhat sour. Supposedly they taste like regular oranges with a hint of strawberry and raspberry. I didn't pick up on that. Regardless, go out and buy some - they were just $1 ...

By dream I don't literally mean that's like my main goal in life or anything, but I really want to try one.

The guy my mom dates grows them but sadly they aren't in season this time of year

First, bake or buy a cake with no frosting. Any kind will do. The simplest way to do this is probably buy a box of cake mix ($1.09 at my grocery store) and bake the cake following the ...

First you get a Martini Shaker and put a few ice cubes in it.

Than you pore a lot of gin it it. I use the cheap stuff because I drink a lot of them and don't want to go broke because I may or may not be an alcoholic.

Next throw in a dash or so of dry vermouth.

Than pore in a good amount of olive juice, the saltier the better in my opinion.

Take 1.5 cups of lentils and put them in a pan. Add water to cover the lentils and bring to a boil (this takes forever for some reason). Boil for 2 min. and let stand (not boiling) for 1 hr.

Next, sauté an onion in olive oil (or other oil if you prefer). Add garlic (anywhere from a clove to a head) and sauté that, too. Add the mixture to the lentils. Sauté a carrot or two and add that to the lentils.

Now, add some other veggies ...

Here's a recipe that's way more work than it's worth.

Take a bag of pinto beans and wash them thoroughly.

Throw them in a pot with some water. Add a diced white or yellow onion, a few cloves of diced garlic, some diced jalapeños (the more the merrier), and some spices to your liking (cumin for example). Simmer and stir every now and then. Add water as the beans get too thick. Continue simmering, stirring, and adding water until the beans are cooked. This will take hours.

Enjoy!

Want to try the BEST food in the world? Make some shellfish paella. I tried (and failed miserably) once but maybe you can do better than me.

A couple things:

You need a paella pan (or so it seems).

Target.com has one for $18.99.

You will also need saffron. Saffron is pretty expensive. A pound of dry saffron (0.45 kg) requires 50,000–75,000 flowers, the equivalent of a football field's area of cultivation. In Western countries, the average retail price is $1,000 per ...

Rhubarb?

A while back I made a strawberry rhubarb pie. Anyways, seeing as rhubarb is nearly impossible to find in CA I had no idea how much I'd need and I bought a bunch just to be safe since it's so hard to find. I ended up having too much and eventually threw the rest out. Other than making pies, what else can you do with rhubarb?
