| (My apologies to those with other beliefs.............) Twas the night before Christmas at Comerica Park The seats were all empty, the stadium was dark. The helmets were hung in the dugout with care In hopes that Spring Training soon would be there The Tigers were home, all snug in their beds While visions of pennants danced in their heads. And Mario in his jersey, and Rod in his cap Had just settled down for an offseason nap When out on the field in the dead of the night Came the roar of a crowd, who was nowhere in sight Away to my seat I ran like the wind Behind the home dugout, with family and friends The new fallen snow that covered the grass Blinded my eyes and froze my a$$ When what to my football-weary eyes should there be But a field full of men wearing old English “D” Then in an instant the field came alive With our handsome Tigers who led one to five More rapid than bullets the pitches he threw It must be Zumaya, his arm good as new Now Polanco, now Edgar, now Bonderman and Grandy On Carlos, on Pudge, on Todd and Verland-y To the edge of the warning track, leaping up on the wall Who could believe Curtis caught that fly ball? As the green grass of the outfield met dirt nice and dry Joel picked off a runner and Maggs caught a fly Then into the dugout our happy boys flew With their gloves and their hats and their big smiles too They were dressed in home white with a blue letter “D” Their clothes were pristine, not a spot on a knee The lineup was posted, it was left up to fate Curtis grabbed his big bat and stolled to the plate The butt of a Marlboro Jim held tight in his lips He face was serene, his hands on his hips In the blink of an eye, Grandy stood on third base Poli stepped up next, a grin on his face And on down the lineup, with hit after hit ‘Til they batted around, and weren’t through yet As a pitch came hurling towards Magglio’s nose He made a great swing, and the crowd then arose The ball cleared the fence by at least a good mile Maggs took his trot and crossed home with a smile And I heard Maggs exclaim as he took his bow Happy Spring Training, it’s just three months now! _________________ “It breaks your heart. Twas the night before Christmas at Comerica Park The seats were all empty, the stadium was dark.
The helmets were hung in the dugout with care In hopes that Spring Training soon would be there
The Tigers were home, all snug in their beds While visions of pennants danced in their heads.
And Mario in his jersey, and Rod in his cap Had just settled down for an offseason nap
When out on the field in the dead of the night Came the roar of a crowd, who was nowhere in sight
Away to my seat I ran like the wind Behind the home dugout, with family and friends
The new fallen snow that covered the grass Blinded my eyes and froze my a$$
When what to my football-weary eyes should there be But a field full of men wearing old English “D”
Then in an instant the field came alive With our handsome Tigers who led one to five
More rapid than bullets the pitches he threw It must be Zumaya, his arm good as new
Now Polanco, now Edgar, now Bonderman and Grandy On Carlos, on Pudge, on Todd and Verland-y
To the edge of the warning track, leaping up on the wall Who could believe Curtis caught that fly ball?
As the green grass of the outfield met dirt nice and dry Joel picked off a runner and Maggs caught a fly
Then into the dugout our happy boys flew With their gloves and their hats and their big smiles too
They were dressed in home white with a blue letter “D” Their clothes were pristine, not a spot on a knee
The lineup was posted, it was left up to fate Curtis grabbed his big bat and stolled to the plate
The butt of a Marlboro Jim held tight in his lips He face was serene, his hands on his hips
In the blink of an eye, Grandy stood on third base Poli stepped up next, a grin on his face
And on down the lineup, with hit after hit ‘Til they batted around, and weren’t through yet
As a pitch came hurling towards Magglio’s nose He made a great swing, and the crowd then arose
The ball cleared the fence by at least a good mile Maggs took his trot and crossed home with a smile
And I heard Maggs exclaim as he took his bow Happy Spring Training, it’s just three months now! |
I you!! Please post that in the Poetry Thread and Sticky it forever!! INCREDIBLE and SOOOO inspiring!!

| Well, Santa left me Goldschlager instead of beer. But I was feeling pretty merry. Nice poem though, TS. Hope you all had a great holiday. _________________ “It breaks your heart.
