Strained oblique lands Konerko on DLSlugger shelved for first time in career; Wise recalledBy Scott Merkin / MLB.com
CHICAGO -- Paul Konerko was placed on the 15-day disabled for the first time in his highly productive career prior to Tuesday's Interleague series opener against the Pirates at U.S. Cellular Field.
Konerko, 32, suffered a Grade 1 strain of his left oblique muscle while taking batting practice prior to Sunday's game with Colorado. The White Sox first baseman and team captain is batting .215 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 62 games this season. The move, made retroactive to June 15, also will give Konerko time to heal soreness in his right thumb area.
Outfielder DeWayne Wise was called up from Triple-A Charlotte to replace Konerko on the roster. This is the second stint this year with the White Sox for Wise, 30, who was hitting .319 with nine home runs and 15 stolen bases for the Knights. Wise was 0-for-5 in six games with the White Sox from May 23-31.
Nick Swisher figures to move from the outfield to first base in Konerko's absence, with Brian Anderson and Wise getting time in center. Manager Ozzie Guillen also could choose to play Alexei Ramirez in center and use Juan Uribe at second base.
