Yeah, for sure. I have a few that have gained value, but that place really thrives on "print run" to drive prices up.
I prefer to collect players I like (ie, Detroit guys)

They do look really SWEET in person though. Much better than the site photos!!

Right before I was done that's pretty much what I did...get one or two of all the Detroit guys but not really worry about trying to make money off of it.

I use to collect big time from 89-95. i had every set from 1977-95 of every brand. all the subsets killed it for me. so i got rid of everything.

for the last 1 1/2 to 2 years i started again. but this time i only collect the players i like. i picked a player for each position.

1b- pena
2b- whitaker
ss- trammell
3b- fryman
of- gibson
granderson
deer- (yeah thats right)
c- nokes
dh- tettleton
p- robertson
i still havent picked a reliever

mng- anderson

i also collect two hockey players- shanahan, mccarty

also my wife collects sizemore (what a surprise)

if anyone collects and has extra's let me know.

Yeah, those subsets kind of ruined it I think. I prefer to go with older stuff - no inserts, no subsets, just a simple base set. It seems like those cards ended up being worth something unlike a lot of the stuff they sell today.

Especially cards made before 1980; Cards from the 50's, 60's and 70's are worth some money.

Most cards from the 80's aren't worth much. Except for like cards like Roger Clemens Fleer Update Rookie and such

No kidding! I have many rookie cards from the 80's...that aren't worth much of anything! Perturbed Even my Cal Ripken Jr rookie card has gone down in value! I kinda blame that on everyone getting their cards PSA or Becketts Graded. Card collecting was Soooooo much better before the grading crap and all the inserts/subsets came around.

The grading doesn't bother me too much but those Censored insert cards ruined the hobby. There used to be Topps base set and that was basically it. Now there's a million companies each of which have dozens of sets with billions of inserts.

If I say I bought an Al Kaline rookie you know what I mean. If I say I bought a Justin Verlander rookie you have no idea what I'm talking about - there's at least 100 such cards.

Roger Clemens rookie cards have gone down, too! The only cards worth a lot from the 80s are the Cards that are PSA 10 Gem Mint.

Since most cards were of less grade fresh from the pack, it is rare to find cards graded in that condition

What's extra fun is to look at a 9 and 10 side by side. You can't see any difference yet collectors will pay 2, 3, 4+ times as much for the PSA 10.

My older sister has collected Baseball cards since we were way little. I should have her go through them with me and see if any are valuable. I have no idea why she collected them, I don't think she even like sports, but she did play t-ball for a year.

My baseball cards are still mostly junk. As a little kid I bought quantity over quality. Slowly I've worked on adding better cards to my collection but that's been slow-going as I've begun collecting 8X10 autographs as well. Most of my good cards are football; however. I have quite a collection of Bobby Layne as he's my Lions hero.

I have too many baseball cards. I have a Maggs, Pudge, Jonesy, Kenny, and many more Tigers, just some of their cards are not as Tigers, I have Kenny's Texas card, and Pudge's Marlins one. But I have many many cards.

Oh, I have all those kinds of cards. I don't have any Al Kaline, etc. though (well I have new Al Kaline cards but those shouldn't count as he doesn't play).

My Bobby Layne collection is real Bobby Layne stuff. I even have his rookie card from 1948.

PostSubject: Re: Baseball Cards   Fri Jul 11, 2008 8:48 am

I probably don't have a single baseball card worth more than $20 ashamed

My best overall card is probably a hockey one. My dad bought me a pack of hockey cards once and it had a Jaromir Jagr game-used jersey patch card. The odds for that particular insert was 1-7,500 cards Stunned Even better Jagr is a great player and a sure-fire HOFer.

I still like my Lions cards the best though. I have every single card from the Topps team sets from every year from 1957-2007 (NOTE: for 4 years Topps only did AFC cards so I have the ones made by Philadelphia instead...they were the only company to make NFC cards those 4 years in the 1960s).

My 8X10 autographs are even better though:

  • Ernie Harwell
  • Charlie Gehringer (HOF)
  • Hal Newhouser (HOF)
  • Al Kaline (HOF)
  • George Kell (HOF)
  • Alan Trammell (should be HOF grouch )
  • Gerald Ford (former US President and University of Michigan HOFer)
  • Jim Bunning (HOF and a US Senator)
  • Mickey Lolich (1968 WS MVP)
  • Gordie Howe (Mr. Hockey...HOF)
