Don't look now, but Mark Reynolds suddenly leads baseball in strikeouts! He has 191 with 11 games to play. C'mon Mark!

No matter what, 191 is rather historic - it's the 4th most in baseball history. If he wants to be the 2008 strikeout king he'll have to work hard, Ryan Howard trails by just one K. Mark has a few things going for him - he hasn't played in every game so he has more K's/game and his team has an extra game left. Still, Howard is the record-holder so he'll be fighting hard to keep his record since it looks like 2 guys are going to break the previous world record this year. Not since 1998 have we seen two guys going after a world record in the same season. Unlike the HR race in 1998, we'll assume this one isn't aided by steroids as steroids aren't believed to help players strike out.

More news....Mark Reynolds has 2 more K's than Bobby Bonds had back in 1970 so he has the all-time record for most K's by a right-handed hitter. Howard is the all-time leader and bats left-handed. For those curious, the record by a switch-hitter is Mark Bellhorn with 177 in 2004. That record won't be broken this year as no switch-hitter has even 128 K's on the season Frown

Also worth noting. Reynolds and Howard aren't helping their HOF chances any...the most K's in a season by a future HOFer is 180 by Mike Schmidt. The second most is 171 by Reggie Jackson. Third is also Jackson with 161. Only 5 times has a future HOFer struck out at least 150 times. Of the top 527 seasons in terms of single-season strikeouts, only 25 of them belong to current HOFers.

Update...

198 K! One more ties him with the all-time record with Ryan Howard and 2 more breaks the record and he can be the first with 200. With 6 games left, he has plenty of opportunities to do it!

Reynolds has 34 errors and could become the first player to lead the majors in errors and strikeouts since Minnesota Twins shortstop Zoilo Versalles (122 strikeouts, 39 errors) during his 1965 AL MVP season.

I'll go out on a limb and say Reynolds won't win the MVP this year.
